I got an X-Box 360 the other day. It's beautiful, hasn't shown me a red light yet, and lets me get rid of the old, gigantic DVD player sitting in my basement. With Milady (that's what I call her to myself), I picked up Beautiful Katamari and The Orange Box. First, I started playing The Orange Box. I got through Portal, found it to be freakin' brilliant, then started to work through Half Life 2.

I've never played the first Half Life, but I Wikipedia'd its plot to avoid confusion during my playings. What Wikipedia failed to tell me is how much of a snoozefest the series is. I'm 2 hours into the game (and just got up to the third chapter, shamefully), and am very ambivilant towards the game. Originally, I thought it was a kick-ass blend of FPS and adventure game (I wound up doing a whole load of exploring), then I found the game boring as all hell. According to a Google search, I should beat through the game's 19 chapters in 10 hours; I'm way behind schedule. Is this why I find the game boring? Anyway, the point to this story is that I'm disappointed with what I expected to be one of the best games ever.

P.S.
Beautiful Katamari is really fun (though it's no Portal). Once I get connected to X-Box Live so I can thoroughly test out my two purchases, expect some glowing reviews for both (I would have spent $60 on Portal alone, honestly).

I'm glad to hear it's working out for you
I knew about the Half Life story and stuff before so I'm excited about the Orange Box. Katamari is another solid choice.

The brilliance of the Half-Life games is that they tell an awesome story without a single cutscene. A great example of this is the first action scene of Half-Life 2 when you're being chased through the city and eventually into a building. In 99% of other games, this sequence (or at least the beginning and end of it) would be handled through a cutscene. Instead, you're given complete control of your character through the whole thing, which ups the intensity of it enormously.

With that said, I have to admit that I still haven't beaten the game. I beat the first one years ago, but that took me two tries as well. The lack of breaks in the gameplay gets a little exhausting, I think, so it's hard to pick the game back up once you've put it down.
