Can a bad movie really be bad? Movies based on games have always had a tendency to be bad and usually I stay clear from them. But, once in a while I just have to see for myself how bad a movie can really be. One such case is BloodRayne, it got a nice 2,6 on IMDB. So I thought what have I got to lose? I guess time and sanity.
Everyone is always **** about Uwe and how his movies are utter crap. Instead of just accepting this opinion from others and going with the flow of saying Uwe is crap, without actually watching one of his movies, I turned on BloodRayne. Well....Boll has really made well known actors into mindless underdeveloped characters who seem to have sprung out of a regular B-movie. How is it that he even got the movie passed the officials. The quality of the dialogs, the choreography or the camera-work is simply awful. He even manages to mess up a naked scene! How is it this guy is still considered a director and how is it, that he still gets the rights to make movies based on games?
Some movies are so bad that they become fun under certain conditions (Scary Movie series), but this one is truly an example of a an awful movie. Do yourself a favor and ignore this movie. It's just not worth the time.

This has got to be one of the best movies, if not the best movie, of this year (this year seeing as it just came out in theaters over here). The movie is everything in one big package; fantasy, gruesome, shocking, hopeful, adventurous, touching, dramatic. Guillermo Del Toro mixed it up so well into a fluent told story that just grabs you till the end and doesn't let go.
The acting of the little girl is great for one of her age and it doesn't happen often that young people put up a great believable performance like the girl playing Ofelia, but the crown in this movie has to go to the person playing the sadistic Capitan Vidal. I understand he's a comedy actor in his own country most of the time, but the role he plays in this movie seems to come natural to him as if he doesn't know how to be not evil.
Yup, this on will go to my DVD collection as soon as it comes out.

It's basically just a monster movie, but it's done very well. Humor, action, drama, you name it. What I liked about this movie is that it didn't have any of the annoying Hollywood humor which in most action/monster movies just pisses me off. Instead it had a good sense of dry humor and hysterical screaming Asians.

The movie keeps the tension high the whole time with great performances of Sebastian Koch and Ulrich Mühe. They make you wonder what their characters would be like if not for the stasi. It's actually terrifying how much the Stasi did to keep the people in check and the situations (sometimes even funny ones) that evolved out of all the spying.

An enjoyable movie all around. The presentation was nicely done and so was the acting. The only little letdown was the fact that the ending was quite obvious. Just looking at the title already creates the ending. But still very much a good movie and worthy of acceptance in anyones collection.

The girl terrorizes him with all sorts of psychological warfare, but terrifies you, the watcher, with the confidence and enthusiasm which she plays her role. I was pleasantly surprised with this one.

Suspect Zero: It tries to be a kind of Se7en, but fails misserably. The story is that of Thomas Mackelway (Aaron Eckhart) as an FBI agent who gets demoted after going after a suspect on his own outside of legal boundaries. But the past seems to follow him around when a serialkiller (Kingsley) seems to contact him. The killer is a former FBI paranormal agent able to hunt serialkillers through dreams and goes off on his own to kill them.
The movie tries to give it a kind of cruel vibe, but fails with drawings of which some are too hard to identify their meaning. Although it's a promising cast, they don't get much to work on. The story is left full of holes and seems to look for easy ways to finish the movie. The methods of Kingsley of getting into 'paranormal mode' are rather laughable and don't really have the effect they're supposed to have. When the end comes, it isn't a surprise and really calls back memories of better movies...I should have watched them instead of wasting time on this one.

Where most of the newer superhero movies adapt the more modern views or darker visions, Superman stays true to its old formula. The question is; Is that a good thing?
The special effects are great, but that's not a big surprise these days with such a big productions. The acting was pretty good overall and Brandon Routh is not a bad choice as Superman. So why the low score? The movie just screams cliché. The movie builds on cliché after cliché without really going anywhere. This kind of stuff might have been fun when the original movies came out, but come on, we're past 2000! I expected there to be a few with the love story between Superman and Lois, and ofcourse it being a superhero story, but I never expected it to be this bad.
Somewhere along the line the movie became a drag and with every cliché I went lower in my chair just waiting for the end.

Ronin is a movie which in my opinion got too little attention when it came out (atleast here in Europe). I really liked this one for the same reason I liked Heat: A more natural feeling to an action movie.
A few guys are recruited for a heist. They don't know what they are supposed to get or why, but they're getting payed for it. Somewhere along the job things go wrong and someone on the team has a hidden agenda.
No overgrown explosions with rambo kind of guys running around the screen or witty sidekicks keeping the so called fun in the move. It's a serious movie, with serious action and one hell of a car chase! Just the way I like it.

One of the best action movies without a doubt and the movie which got me into keeping an eye on Michael Mann's work.
The movie follows two people on the different sides. One a cop (Al Pacino), the other a master thief (Robert De Niro). Even though they are opposite to each other when the law is considered, they are both alike and have a respect for each other. Both go about their business with a high level of perfection. Without their jobs they are nothing and in love they mess up.
It's one big cat and mouse game where one little mistake can make the difference between live and death. Pacino hunts for his prey with zeal while De Niro tries to finish his big score. This game comes to a climax in one of the best serious action sequences after a bank robbery and the question will be who will remain standing in the end.
It's almost like a classic western in the downtown streets of big skyscrapers. If you haven't seen it yet, then put it on your list.

Now here's a gem! This is one for the collection. Martin Scorsese revives the screen with a great crime movie with subtle and dark humor in it. The story starts out as a no-brainer: You know it's going to go wrong, you're just waiting for the moment: Two Boston boys (Damon and DiCaprio) end up on the opposite side of the law. But both get assigned to infiltrate their enemy organisation by there bosses (Crime lord Nicholson and Police chief Sheen). And that's where the difficult times start. Both characters seem a like and even their taste in women follows the same road, but eventually a confrontation and unmasking will have to follow as both try to beat each other to that point.
All the actors play their roles greatly, but none shine like Jack Nicholson. That guy still hasn't lost his charm and the way he makes a crime lord come to live is brilliant! But even besides this giant among actors Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio hold their own and make it a feast to watch. Besides the acting, the story will keep you on the edge of your seat.
So.....what are you waiting for? Go watch it!

This was one of 2006's dissapointments. It's fun and entertaining, but it misses the clear fun and brilliance the first movie brought. Instead, the director chose to do a sequel Hollywood-style: Make them wait for part 3. Now where have I seen that before? Oh yes, The Matrix. Another trilogy that started out great with the first part, but went down in quality when they decided to milk the cow and stretch the story a lot to bring out another two movies.
But ok, Johnny Depp is still doing great as pirate and makes for enough laughing. So if you're looking for a bit of entertainment, you'll be satisfied. Just don't expect the same quality from part one.
