Nice to see you back again - I guess I'll wish you an early happy birthday for if you don't post again in the mean time. I know how you feel about the endless exams and assignments, one of the worst things is having all of the major ones due in the space of a few days.

Advice from someone who is now in his 4th year - a lot of the assignments are 75% research anyway (although it depends on the subject), so you should go into the library and find out what you're supposed to know near the beginning of the semester when things aren't as bad. It means you'll have more time to study for exams near the end when all the major ones are held.

I've been having a bad week, my uncle died unexpectedly a few days ago which was a bit of a shock. I'm on my break as well - have been since November (we get pretty long breaks because it's summer).

Uni is starting next week, but since I'm supposed to be studying overseas this year, I can't take any classes in Australia, so my break goes until I leave in a month or so, but I still have to go to information sessions and hand in forms on fairly short notice.

I'm sorry to hear about your uncle, you're lucky it's summer over there. it's winter now ugh...i hate this weather so much. have a sort break coming up next week...it's called reading week that's when i'm supposed to be studying for exams. studying over seas, that's the Japan trip right?

Yeah, it's for Japan. I've got the passport stamped and everything, but I still need the plane tickets.

The weather is pretty good at the moment, but I think if you were here earlier in the month you'd have wanted to go back to Canada. There were three days in a row where it was over 40 degrees C in some parts of Sydney, and it got up to 46 in Melbourne. It's mostly in the mid to high 20s for the next week, which is just right, but they're expecting thunderstorms for a few evenings.

how long will you be in Japan? sounds soo exciting.

My visa is valid for a whole year, but I'm going to be there for a bit less than that. I'll be leaving late March or early April (we need a few weeks to settle in before the academic year starts in Japan), and I'll need to be back in February in time for the start of the Australian classes.

wow sounds like a hell of an experience. so that must mean you understand Japanese?
Posted Feb 24, 2009 9:25 am PT
We're required to do the local language for two years at uni before we leave, and I did it for five years at high school as well, so I know enough Japanese to survive there for a year. I wouldn't try going there if I wasn't confident in my Japanese skills. There are some places we're allowed to go where you can get by using English and only knowing a little bit of the local language. I probably would have gone to Montreal or one of the areas in the US with a lot of Spanish speakers if I had to start a new language from the beginning, but doing everything in English when I'm supposed to be studying in another language is sort of cheating.

yeah that makes sense. how exciting!! when do you leave exactly?

Don't know for sure until the university gives me my plane tickets. One of the things they've given me says 01 April on a letter which is supposed to be proof that while I'm outside the country I'm still enrolled in the Australian uni to prove that I can still get some government services while I'm away which are usually only available for six months otherwise. It might not be the exact date, but the person next to me when they were handed out got the letter with no date on it (she was going to a different uni) and some other people got slightly different dates so I think it would be pretty close.
