In searching out some news on recent projects from Yoko Kanno (read: genius) I stumbled across some recently breaking news. It appears that a live-action anime Cowboy Bebop movie is in the works at Fox. In my humbled opinion, animation of this caliber should never be turned into "reality". There are nuances and personalities in the series that can never be captured correctly with actors. They've already announced that Keanu Reeves will be playing the role of Spike.

"All we are is dust in the wind," dude.

Albeit Reeves 'looks' like Spike, I personally doubt he can pull off Spike's deep, resounding internalized intelligence based upon his recent dull portrayal of Klaatu in "The Day the Earth Stood Still". I'm also curious who they're going to find to play the excitable Ed and Ein without resorting to Scooby-Doo-like computer scorcery. So far music maestro Yoko Kanno has yet to say whether she's on board with this project and, without her, it's highly questionable that the movie will have as much of a cultural impact as the original series. Kanno's music is what put the Bebop in Cowboy Bebop, transcending the anime to a timeless piece of artwork.

On a totally unrelated note, I've recently tried out both TVersity and PlayOn. TVersity is a great media server for streaming content (videos, pictures, music) from your PC to your game system, although it's rather devoid of any real internet video streaming. Relying solely on your game system to pull music through your media center enabled PC can be rather limiting (the PS3 plays mostly DivX), but TVersity can play anything that your PC can without any help from Windows.

PlayOn, however, is in a whole different category. It perfectly streams, in quite high resolution mind you, videocasting from such sources as Hulu, YouTube, and CBS. It can't play the content currently on your PC, but the amount of media out on the web easily makes up for that. Hulu is definitely the best source of entertainment currently and I have a feeling that online media is still only in its infant stage. Be prepared for more partners to join in the video streaming revolution.

It took no effort to get both of these programs running simultaneously on my PS3 through a hard-wired router. The folder system on the PS3 also makes it easy to find recent episodes of The Simpsons and Family Guy and old episodes of MacGyver and the A-Team. TVersity if a totally free software right now but PlayOn is only free for 15 days before you're required to purchase it. For the "low" price, however, this is a great alternative to buying an extra cable box.

I think there is no way an actor can catch and contain the emotion shown on truly well made anime. What works about Spike as an emoting character is the artist's ability to simplify the face to precisely the emotion they want you to see with nothing else like cheek-bones and changes in skin-color that often betray real-life actors. While Keanu Reeves is perhaps the worst possible choice for Spike, there are no good choices. Simply put, as mere humans, we cannot completely hide whatever feeling we are going through at the moment whereas animation is drawn in that emotion. Good artistry, like that made use of in Cowboy Bebop, takes advantage of this.

I'm a Canadian Mac owner. So although a service like those you mentioned would be ideal for me, it seems I'm a ways off from even being eligible. Since the US is one of the only countries where you can be prosecuted for downloading protected information, most of these services limit their content to within your borders.
I don't think I gotta explain the Mac part.

As for Cowby Bebop ... Never seen the Anime. I suppose I should do that before Reeves ruins it for me.

Hi IG, long time no see! I know nothing about anime, but Im not a big Keanu Reeves fan, since hes like the same in all his movies.

Son of a b*tch.. I thought the Keanu Reeves thing was a joke the first time I heard about it.. ugh

If they got Shinichirō Watanabe as director and Keiko Nobumoto as writer, I'd be willing to see what they do with live action Cowboy Bebop.

Yeah well Keanu Reaves was good in Matrix and Constantine so he may be good at this too. Turning games, Anime and similar to real life movies is a bit tricky and not all that easy. Even movies based on books sometimes turns out to be disappointing
Both PlayOn and TVersity seems to be an interesting program but personally I don't use PC or consoles for watching Movies or listening to music. I buy music/ movie DVDs and watch/listen to them either on my Aiwa portable Discman or Sharp DVD player.

Hmm; what other original creative content can we recycle in Hollywood, since we're out of original ideas? Dragon Ball Z? Oh, already in the works. Land of the Lost? Oh, that's in the works, too. How about turning a Carnival Ride into a movie? Oh, Pirates of the Caribbean, right.

Why is it so difficult to come up with original content for a film? Every film has to be based on something else. I can't even think of a film offhand that wasn't based on some book or other creative piece before it.

All that being said, I'll probably go see it, being the hypocrite I am.

gri ... that's true about our human emotions. Animated characters can literally be an empty palette to build a new story off of. In terms of actors, the audience will always think of them as human first before a character... and will most likely refer to their previous work (like I originally did). Cowboy Bebop would probably be better off with some unknowns.

dQ ... ha, Mac. You don't get Hulu up there D in communist Canada? Somehow I believe they've got some sort of permission to run these shows on their site. You'll usually see the license holder's branding in the corner as you play (FoxOn is one). As an artist, you gotta see Cowboy Bebop...

Alli ... Hey! I've been working hard. I'm making salary now I'm thinking they picked Keanu for that reason. He's a blank slate

Skool ... No joke

311 ... Peter Craig is writing but Kenji Uchida, Shinichiro Watanabe, Keiko Nobumoto, and Masahiko Minami will be assisting. I hope the latter has more influence than the American. Look at what Americans did to Silent Hill *shiver

Fari ... I enjoy everything now from my PS3: Bluray, DVD, music, online content, PC videos, pictures. I also forgot to mention (yet haven't done it myself) that you can even stream this stuff to your PSP.

Boz ... It's sad to think of all the creative people out there and studios have to rummage the game/anime bin for ideas. Maybe all the creative people are sick of getting shafted by production studios and are working in the emerging media? It's not the lack of ideas in my opinion, but the lack of support. We're moving on as a culture to new frontiers. I guess this leads into my second topic. CBS and Fox have realized that their viewers are moving away from standard television to online content. It's amazing the amount of content that CBS has slipped online without a huge marketing push. Personally, I don't like that TV doesn't fit into my schedule and instead of having to work too hard, I'd rather go online and find my shows. In the short future, it will be what the audience demands of the movie, television, and music studios... not what the studios demand of its audience.

Licensing will be a tricky issue going forward in this brave new world. Canada doesn't get Netflix (on XBL). It doesn't get Hulu. It doesn't even get most of the streamed American network sites as the US does. Instead, we prefer freedom of information. I'll take that over NBC and Comedy Central any day, as I can just download all that garbage using any number of programs available for free online, and legal for me to use

Oh, and we're a democracy. Look it up. I think your country removed that word from your dictionaries, subtly replacing it with despocracy. God bless the internet

I hope you know I was kidding about the Communism D, hence the Entertainment is a far cry from "information". Our problem is that we sometimes get TOO much information and the media is used as a force rather than a source. If there's any hope for the American economy, we're going to have to come up with a way to protect our intellectual property rights going forward. The idea that we lose so much money in piracy overseas irks me terribly.

Gosh, taking heat from Canada. How low we've gotten.

Of course I know you were kidding. But you here one "joke" enough, and it almost becomes truth. Like you guys being a democracy

Would me "borrowing" a digital copy of Cowboy Bebop from the Japanese ease your pain?
Posted Jan 22, 2009 11:46 pm PT
What!? Keanu Reves has all the acting talent and voice inflection of an autistic. How could this happen?
Posted Jan 24, 2009 2:10 am PT
D, I promise you'll "borrow" it once and want to buy the best version possible.

IMB, hey bud! The only explanation is that they were hoping for a clean slate, someone with the personality of a piece of paper for them to draw their character on. Maybe I'll just ignore it all like I do with all the other American-ized crap. What happened to movies like Blade Runner?

Update: Still using both of these programs, but I'm wondering how often Hulu updates their material. They have a good selection of 80's flicks that I'll be perusing through when I find some time. I've also read a rumor that PlayOn was talking to Disney's ABC network. It also appears Netflix is doing well during these recessionary times (a month's worth of movies compared to one night out is looking more attractive than ever), so it even makes more sense that this program, and others like it, are bound to catch on.
