It seems to me that gamers are letting developers off the hook when it comes to online shooters. I have a few beefs and I know a lot of you will scold me for what I am about to write. First off two games that come to my mind that everyone raves about how good their multiplayer is online are Perfect Dark Zero and Gears of War. Just because it has an online multiplayer doesn't mean it is fun. I read the reviews on these games and it astonishes me how much everyone likes it. Granted PDZ not so much anymore but when it first came out it was a hit. Gamespot even gave it a editors choice award. I feel everyone is buying into the hype that Microsoft is able to produce through good marketing. Also I am not a hater of Microsoft, my favorite online game is Halo 2. But more on that later. First I want to tell you the reasons that these games are not that good. How many of you have ever shot a gun? That has to be my first question. Because in both games if you use certain weapons you might as well be shooting spit wads at each other. I do not want to hear that in Gears of War you should switch to your shotgun. You know what the freaking machine gun should work. A chain saw should not kill you faster than a gun. Come on that is just common sense in game design. PDZ is worse you have players with automatics running around in circles trying to kill each other. A complete JOKE! Also if I am holding a sniper rifle and someone is say 50 yards away, I would not have to take my eye out of the zoom and reposition my gun in front of what I am trying to shoot. I would be able to follow them. Why is it in Gears of War and PDZ that the sight can't keep up with the person running? Poor game design, that's why. Also in PDZ a player can be right in front of you and you can't seem to keep your reticule on them. The fun in a shooter shouldn't be about how hard it is to aim it should be about strategy. Both games only have one spawn point. Why? Lazy game design. It makes more sense in GOW. It makes absolutely no sense in PDZ. From what I have said is enough reasons that the games are not any fun but I could go on a lot more. For instance why are the games on a next generation console and the matchmaking system is completely inferior to that of Bungie's which came out in 2004. It is so easy to jump in with a friend and play a ranked match. Why can't you do this on a more powerful system? Again lazy game design.
O.K. maybe I am being to hard on these guys. Multiplayer is only half the game right. For games to get these amazingly high scores the single player must be awesome. WRONG I believe it might be worse in both games. PDZ is there really anything to say except that it was boring and cheap. The enemies were stupid except for the fact that you were constantly getting hit from nowhere. Cheesy story and you could finish it in a day. WOW next generation! GOW isn't quite as bad but it still doesn't deserve half the praise it has gotten. That game as well is way too short and doesn't have a much better story than PDZ. It also suffers from stupid AI and poor design on where the enemies are located. Emergence holes....give me a break. Couldn't the developers at least have put a few enemies in strategic locations.
Goldenye, the original Perfect Dark, Halo series, and COD 2 and 3 are the only games I have played that gets the shooting aspects right. The sniper follows people like it should. You shoot someone in the face and they die like they should. OK you got me in Halo it takes more licks with some of the weapons but at least they have on full body armor unlike PDZ and GOW where their heads are exposed. Also the weapons are so much better balanced in Halo. There have been numerous times where I have taken out the rocket launcher with the machine gun. Why because that game requires much more strategy.
I know I will get persecuted by most of you that take the time to read this rant. You know what I do not care because if we continue to accept these mediocre games then you know what happens. Yep that is what we are going to be stuck playing and developers are going to laugh all the way to the bank. Thank goodness we have a developer like Bungie that actually wants to put out a game that is FUN.

I also agree with the overall theme of the article, as well. Westerners seem to have a giant lovefest for anything with lots of guns in it. I don't know why, but they do, and as such, ratings of anything with lots of guns is inevitably inflated by about at least 2 points or so. I thought Gears of War was a good game, but nine-point-something? Better than the much more interesting BioShock? Not in my view.
