Interesting fact #256:
The Titanic was the first ship to use the SOS signal
That worked out well, didn't it?
A few days ago I helped my brother by a laptop, after comparing a few dozen different computers we found a good and cheap one that fit his needs, it's a lot more powerful than my computer.
The next day I try to start up my own stationary computer. The screen stays black, I don't hear that characteristic "beep" that I always hear when I start it up, but after a few seconds I did sense a strong scent of burned rubber... I thought: "that can't be good". I immediately turn it off. I decide to clean the inside (it wasn't really that dusty), I look for whatever it was that produced that scent with my eyes and my nose... I couldn't find it.
I start it up again, it doesn't work, no "beep", but no weird smell either. I go to sleep. Next morning (yesterday) it still doesn't work. I think stupid thing like "God, you have a great sense of humor". And I also think "goodbye E3". I clean it out again, I even remove and re-insert some parts. I decide to leave it alone without touching it for the next 24 hours, to really let it cool down.
Today, it started working again
... TEH RELIEF. All my data is intact too. But I'm kinda nervous now... how long will it last? Was it one of the fans that stopped spinning? Will it be able to handle the strain of the coming weeks? *Cliffhanger*.....

It'll cut out just before E3 as further punishment. D:
Also, I heart those smilies. D:
I wonder what they used before SOS, though? They must have had something, and since it was replaced with a shorter message, it must have been considerably longer than SOS.
*ship sinking. Water leaking in through walls and windows. A lone sailor is tapping away on the morse code machine*
"I do say, if I may bother you for just a second while I communicate a problem I am incurring. It seems, rather embarrassingly, that my ship is sinking. I know, jolly shame, eh? If you could please send assistance, perhaps in the form of a sea-faring vessel, then mayhaps we can survive. Yours, The Captain.
Ps. Vote YES! on the SOS replacement signal at next month's election. FOR GOD'S SAKE VOTE YES!"
The Accursed Desktop....coming soon to a theatre near you.
But I'm pretty sure it's not something like that Egonga *squint* or a billion other computers would have far worse burns that my computer.
And The Accursed Desktop sounds like a movie I'd watch, rather watch it then live in it >__>
Regarding your computer; BACK UP EVERYTHING IMMEDIATELY. I cannot stress this enough. My hard drive failed a year ago, and it started by doing things like this, failing the POST test (the beep), and just acting weirdly. If you also hear any rattling from the computer turn it off at once. Hopefully, it won't be anything this serious, but it is better to be on the safe side.
One word ...
"backup".
Also sucks about your computer almost breaking..... I hope that doesn't to happen to my lap top cause i can't really take it apart
@katamari - yeah, I don't see any spam anywhere >_>And I found the smileys in this thread in the How to Gamespot Board. Copied a lot of them and put them in my photobucket account for easy access
@Egonga -
Cougar - I might make 2 facts next time just because of that. >_>
The PC Wizard 2008 is claiming that my CPU has a temperature of 67 degrees right now, the recommended max temperature is 70 degrees... I've seen it go way way above that number a few times so I'm making the conclusion that my comp or fan (which is spotless, vacuumed the hell out of it) is getting closer to the end of the road...
Or maybe you could a virus, or just a problem in your system files.
If the problem persist, make a system restore and if the problem keeps then you will know that is the pc motherboard, processor, etc.
@horgen123 - Let's call that Plan B
@rabbit_pie - Of course I remember you ^.^ you'll always be one of my oldest friends on GS... is this just a short visit?
PS. this PM is just a GS feature they added while you were gone
