Well folks, I finally caved last week and bought a PS3! I actually managed to win an auction on eBay for a brand new, sealed PS3 Slim for $230. I think that helped with my decision!
The system arrived this weekend and I have picked up Dragon Age Origins, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, and Borderlands. I've only played Borderlands so far, but it basically has ruled my life the past couple days. I ordered CoD: MW2 and it should arrive within the next few days and I'm really excited about that. I still need to get the first Uncharted before I start the second one, but I haven't found a cheap one online yet.
Demon's Souls and Dragon Age will have to wait until mid December since I have final exams coming up and I know those two games will be complete time sucks.
All of you with PS3's wanna message me their PSN info so we can play Borderlands/CoD: MW2/whatever else I get in the future that works? That would be great!
In other news, #2 on my countdown will come out tomorrow with #1 to follow this weekend. Everyone get excited for that! Hope all of you Americans have a great Thanksgiving! I know I can't wait for all that amazing food and of course family!
Coming in at #3 on my countdown is the legendary Final Fantasy VII for PlayStation. This is the first game I got for my PlayStation, and to be honest I really don't even know why I got it. I really wasn't that into RPGs before this game as the only ones I had even played were Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy for the NES and Ogre Battle 64 for the N64. I was a huge fan of the entire Zelda series, though, and I find adventure games to often times be sort of a distant relative to the RPG. I think I just saw a commercial for it on TV and thought it looked amazing. I'm glad I decided to pick up this gem since it has really influenced my taste in games more than any other title. RPGs easily dominate my library thanks mostly to Final Fantasy VII.

Everything about this game was absolutely awesome when it came out. I loved running through the cruddy slum streets. Hearing each new great character theme kept me humming it for the rest of the day (or at least until I heard another track that took its place). The story involved me so much that I really cared about each character's actions and comments. I must say, I didn't cry during this game, but I came very close. I hadn't experienced anything from the story of Final Fantasy VII in any game before it. Sephiroth is extremely disturbed and makes a fantastically entertaining villain. Cloud's struggles, not only against Sephiroth, but against his own past and inner thoughts add much depth to the plot and overall experience. The story of Final Fantasy VII has definitely stuck with me over the years, and I still use it to compare stories of newer games when I complete them.
I love the music of this game. Nobuo Uematsu in my opinion is an absolute genius. Each track blends perfectly with the landscape to create incredibly unique and memorable environments to explore. I don't think that Final Fantasy VII contains his best work, but it definitely delivers a musical experience that few other games can match, much less top.
The characters, while fitting stereotypes (but remember the stereotypes were much younger at this point), still feel unique and genuine. I really do like Cloud in this game. I actually recently ranted against the use of the word "overrated" when referring to characters in games which started when someone placed this label on Cloud.
Sephiroth is a really sweet villain...not my favorite but still awesome. Vincent is an interesting character in that even though he is an optional character he plays a large part in the backstory of the game (and even gets his own spi-off game). I really can't stand Cait Sith, but he is still an interesting character. Most people grow attached to Aeris/Aerith and I can see why. All the other characters also play a strong part in the story and each one is provided with nice depth. During my first playthrough, I really enjoyed getting to know each and every one of the characters in Final Fantasy VII.

When I first played this game, it was more frustrating than any other game I had ever played. Why was this the case you ask? Well, this was the first game I ever played for the PlayStation and at first I didn't know I needed a memory card.
I was either ten or eleven when I got the game so I really couldn't just go out and buy one like I could now, so I had to wait for my mom to either get me one or take me to get one. This means that the first week or so I played the game I was just running through the slums of Midgar over and over again without progressing the story at all. Oh well...since then I have beaten the game eight times (more than any other game). I think I've gotten my money's worth with this one. The best part is I enjoyed each playthrough almost as much as the first. That's when you know you have a truly great game on your hands.
Yeah, so if anyone hasn't played this game then I'd say RPGs obviously aren't your thing anyway (or you are just so young that this game is older than you
). If anyone hasn't heard of this game then you have just been living under a rock or in a cave or on another planet or something. Regardless this game is fantastic and deserves a place in any and everyone's game library. Eight down and only two to go...any guesses as to my final two? Those who know me well enough should at least be able to guess one of them
.
So far my countdown has included some entries that people either haven't played or haven't even hear of. I assure you there will be no more of this since the top 4 games are all quite popular and very well known. Even with this being the case, I'm sure the suspense will still be killing you to see what the games and order of my top 3 will be. You will have to wait, though, since all you are getting now is my number 4: Chrono Cross for the original PlayStation.
I am gonna start off by saying that I hate hearing people bash this game because it isn't what everyone expected/wanted the sequel to Chrono Trigger to be. Looking past the fact there there are minimal story connection between the two games it is easy to see that Chrono Cross is a fantastic game in its own right. Most critics, including GameSpot, absolutely love this game so I don't see why more people aren't willing to truly give this game a chance (not that I agree with everything critics say, but they can't all be wrong can they?).
I wrote a review on this game some time ago so I really am not going to go into as much detail as I have with previous games. I love everything about this game. The story is amazing and deals with time travel and alternate dimensions. I thought Squaresoft did a great job with the story even if it is only loosely related to Chrono Trigger. There are dozens of characters to unlock and use, but they cannot all be unlocked during one playthrough due to decisions that must be made throughout. There is, however, a new game+ feature that can be used to serve this purpose. Many see all these characters as a flaw of the game, but I enjoy having the ability to choose my own unique party that suits me. Yes, most of the characters have very little character development and backstory, but the characters that are truly important to the main storyline are fleshed out enough that this never bothered me. I am a fan of Suikoden and the 108 Stars of Destiny after all so this shouldn't surprise anyone.
The battles are unique as you have the option of performing a weak, medium, or strong attack with decreasing accuracy respectively. Each hit allows you to use increasing levels of magic and skills based on how you organized them for each character. I'm not going to explain more since most of you who have any desire to have already played this game. I just feel that is all works incredibly well and keeps the player entertained throughout the game without being repetitive.

Chrono Cross actually has my second favorite soundtrack of any game I've played. I love the music of this game and I feel each track fits beautifully with the environment and mood it is played in. The intro music and movie is also one of my favorites out of any game and is right up there in my opinion with Final Fantasy VIII's.
Chrono Cross is just an all around fantastic game that I have easily poured over 100 hours into without even caring. I'm almost upset that Chrono Trigger was released just because it has cast a giant footstep for this game to follow in...almost upset. ![]()
