I'm currently in the final stages of getting ready to start college within the next week and a half. I got my textbook (only need one this semester) and my schedule is set. The only thing left for me to do is go computer shopping for a new laptop. I originally was going to order one from HP, but unfortunately, I won't be able to get it in time for class to start. I'll be using it primarily for school, but I just might use it for movies, some music, & some light gaming on the side, eventually replacing my old desktop Vaio, which I've had for 5 years. I've just about narrowed it down to two choices. Hit the links for the full stats:

HP Pavilion Laptop dv7-2185dxA nice, fast, beefy machine which seems perfect for all my needs. The downsides are the lack of a Blu-Ray drive, its size (I know it's a meant as a desktop replacement, but it isn't that much of a pain for me to carry) and no HD display, although I can hook it up to my TV.The price is a bit on the high side.

Dell Studio XPS Laptop X1640-026BSmaller, leaner, but seems to be a still worthwhile notebook. Plus, Blu-Ray! On the minus side, I heard the resolution leaves something to be desired, I can't hook it up to a TV easily because of a lack of an HDMI slot, plus it runs very warm from some of the research I've done.

Throw a brother a bone....Which should I go with?

I'd go with the HP. I've always had good luck with their computers and they last a nice long time.

Haven't heard many positive things about Dell from the people I know that have had them.

I heard a lot of mixed things about Dell as well. Although the tech guy who works on our computers at work swears by them.

I'd go with the HP also. It costs more, but you'd be paying for the the Quad core, extra 2GB of ram, bigger screen/higher resolution, and a graphics card with 1GB of memory instead of the 512MB on the M86XT(although I've never heard of this graphics card so it could be better).

Also, we've bought a couple HP PC's and they've all lasted for 5+ years. Their customer service has always been great.

If it's just for schol, I'd go with the cheapest.

I have a Dell laptop, it gets the job done, and that is all I ask of it.

Stay away from Dell. Heard horror stories regarding their reliablity and customer service.

Go with HP. I've seen so many problems happen with Dells.

well you mentioned desktop replacement so I'd go with the HP. (Heck after seeing the stats on that thing, I kinda want one myself). I hear their support is a bit lacking though, but since Ive never owned an hp pc, I wouldnt know offhand. Good Luck with whatever you choose.

Go with the pretty one!

Hmm... will you be watching blu-ray stuff a lot on it? I wouldn't use that as a deciding factor.

Go with the HP one, it has the better graphics card and remember that those things are not only good for video games, think of all the graphic, design, and video applications as well.

Every laptop we've ever used in our business has been Dell....we've never had a problem with them. Really don't know much about the HP.
