I shouldn't need to say this, but just in case I will. These are my OPINIONS.
I've been in a serious Final Fantasy mood these past few weeks. Like I said in my last blog I was playing Final Fantasy XII. I'm very close to completing the game. I believe all I need to do now is to complete the Bahamut.
I beat Final Fantasy VIII in a few days. I've got mixed feelings about this game. Since it's a PS1 game I'll compare it to Final Fantasy IX.
First of all the graphics. Final Fantasy IX's graphics were indeed better, but not by much. For the most part I was very happy with Final Fantasy VIII's graphics. I found it pretty cool that you can move around while a cutscene is playing.
Next up is the story. Final Fantasy VIII started off really good then plummeted later. The ending of the game was awful. It never warns you about the point of no return, so I couldn't go back into any town! I got over that after learning Call Shop, but then I was disappointed with the ending FMV. It didn't clear up much of the whole time compression plot. Ultimecia looks like she's just some power-crazy psycho trying to destroy the world. Her personality was poorly developed. Kuja was a great villain and I'm pretty sure Sephiroth was too. They were both well developed and their goals were clearly explained.
Gameplay was good, very good. I liked that summons were made different from magic. Drawing was a really cool feature. GF's were a bit too strong though. For the majority of the first three discs I pretty much spammed Shiva, Leviathan and Alexander. Bosses died so quickly against them. I kept thinking "what is the point of physical attacks?". In the later half of the third disc and fourth disc I found some really good spells that I junctioned onto my stats making my characters really strong. I easily defeated Ultimecia like that. Although the gameplay was good it was WAY too easy. FF8 didn't give me the same challenge that FF9 gave me. FF9 had some really hard parts that I had to use serious strategy on.
Most of the characters in FF8 are pointless other than Leon and Rinoa. They start off fairly important to the story then after the scene where everyone starts remembering their pasts they don't matter anymore. Leon does develop a lot throughout the story, but for a main character, he's really cold. I prefer Zidane's fun, positive attitude to Leon's "...whatever" attitude. FF9's characters were all very important (well, maybe not Quina). I wish that FF8 had better character development. Okay, that's about it. I'm playing FF7 again now after quitting many years ago. I don't remember the graphics being this bad! It's awful! It's like on the losing end of the spectrum while Chrono Cross in on the winning end. I'm not one to let bad graphics ruin a game though, so I'm continuing to play. I do like it so far, enough for it to move up my list. Previously my list looked like this:
1. Final Fantasy 6
2. Final Fantasy 9
3. Final Fantasy 12
4. Final Fantasy 5
5. Final Fantasy 4
6. Final Fantasy 2
7. Final Fantasy
8. Final Fantasy 7
Now it looks like this:
1. Final Fantasy 6
1. Final Fantasy 9
3. Final Fantasy 12
4. Final Fantasy 5
5. Final Fantasy 8 (NEW)
6. Final Fantasy 4
7. Final Fantasy 7 (UP 2)
8. Final Fantasy 2 (DOWN 1)
9. Final Fantasy (DOWN 1)
I'm not so sure which is my favourite anymore, so I put FF6 and FF9 as equal.
I've been hearing good things about Final Fantasy X. Some people recommended that I try it. Is it really that good?
Note: Yes, I know his name isn't actually Leon!

FFX is indeed a nice game as it's the second best FF game on my list. It has a great story, awesome summoning mechanics, great characters as well. It's worth trying for any FF collector IMO.

Nice summary. I'm a FF virgin.

Ah, I remember Final Fantasy VIII.
The story of that game really did get ridiculous towards the end. I liked the first parts with Edea being the main villain and all (she was probably my favourite character in the game) since I found it to be very interesting. Towards the end...all that they could pull out was that stupid time compression crap that made no sense.
I do agree that there were things that made Final Fantasy VIII way too easy. I mean, come on, a Bahamut Card turns into 99 Megaelixirs. That's almost game-breaking already.
Also, I did find that the main crew of Final Fantasy VIII were very lacking as well. I hate Squall and Rinoa's personality while all the others, while they have a decent personality, felt almost insignificant in the long run.
Final Fantasy VI is my favourite Final Fantasy game as well!

PLZKLLME0080: Yeah, it's definitely worth playing.
bahamat0: Okay, sounds great!
ebbderelict: *gasp* you've never even pressed a button while a Final Fantasy was on the screen?
Platyphyllum: Yeah, time compression really did make no sense. I had to read a guide to understand it and I still barely understand what Ultimecia was trying to do.
unreal1212: I'm considering getting a PS3, but not right now.
thrubeingcool13: The original or one of its sequels?
Helostwin: *Double gasp* Ah well...
rebelway: Yeah, I like a game where the characters have emotions, so I'll probably get it.
death_angel1200: XII is a hard Final Fantasy, but I found it very fun.

I really need to try and find a copy of FFVII soon, or any FF before FFX for that matter
You'll love the ending of FFXII too!

death_angel1200: Yeah, bosses can be irritating, but I'd rather a hard fight than easy.
je_taime_RB_27L: The story, the characters and the gameplay are all great. The graphics aren't so good obviously since it was for the SNES. The story is just amazing. It's hard to find a game with so many characters that are important to the storyline.
Dapie: Yeah, the ending of FFXII was great!

FFX was a really good game, even though I never got around to beating it.
