GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con
Wednesday, Oct 11, 2006
On game-related message boards like our very own GameSpot forums, you'll often see people refer to their ever-growing backlog of games. It's a phenomenon that's unique to video games, because unlike other forms of entertainment media, video games are designed to occupy large amounts of your time. You might miss a movie you wanted to see, but all it takes is a couple of hours and a Netflix account to get caught up. If one of your favorite music artists releases a new album you'll probably listen to it right away, and musical tastes are usually specific enough that you can hear a song once and know whether or not you like it. That takes all of what, three minutes? With a video game, you usually have to put in at least a few hours to really get a feel for it.

For a person like me the backlog can be a very serious problem, because my tastes are very broad. I like just about every kind of game, from Fight Night and MotoGP to Resident Evil 4 and Guitar Hero. Those are all great games and I could probably play them for hundreds of hours each if all other games suddenly ceased to exist. But at the same time, I don't feel like I need to play each of those games for that much time to truly enjoy them. My problem is that I also happen to be a big fan of role-playing games, which are entirely different. You could compare role-playing games and most other games to reading a book versus reading a magazine. Books have a very deliberate pace and they're structured to deliver a longer, more detailed picture of the subject matter than magazines are. When you pick up a magazine you don't have to read it cover to cover, you can read an article here, an editorial there, do the crossword puzzle in the back, and be done. There's nothing that annoys me more than starting a role-playing game, getting half-way through it, and then losing interest or moving on to another game. It's like reading half of a book. There's always a lingering feeling that I've got some unfinished business, and that just bugs me.

The result is a backlog full of role-playing games. There are so many in fact that I could quit my job and play the games full-time, and never reach the end. But as appealing as that sounds, it wouldn't be much fun. After
all, not every role-playing game is really worth playing. Just as with any
other type of game, there are a lot of bad ones out there that would gladly eat
up all your precious time and money. At times like these you can only afford to play the best of the best, so I've made a list of a few games that should be at the very top of your list if you're a fan of RPGs. Note that all of these games have or will come out this year. I have played some of these games, but I'm including them in the list for the reference of others.

Role-Playing To-Do's

-Final Fantasy XII - I don't know if this game will be any
good, but I know that I have to play it. I have played through Final Fantasy
VI, VII, IX, X, and Tactics, and they are some of my favorite games of all
time--in any genre. I can't promise that I'll finish it, but I'll definitely put
Final Fantasy XII at the top of my to-do list when it comes out later this month.

-The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - If you haven't played this
already you should move it to the top of your list. I've spent 40 or 50 hours
with this game so far, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Some
people might call this more of an action game, but it has the scope and feel of
a role-playing game, so it might be time for you to give the spikey-haired teen
heroes a break.

-Neverwinter Nights 2 - I'll be honest, I haven't seen much
of this game so far. However, for people looking for a traditional PC-style
role-playing game it looks like NWN2 is the game to look forward to. It may be
developed by Obsidian rather than BioWare, but those guys did a great job with
KOTOR 2, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with the sequel
to one of the best PC role-playing games of all time.

-Final Fantasy VI Advance - Alright, so this game might very well not make it out this year, but I still have to hold out hope. Final Fantasy VI is a masterpiece, and I would place it above any other of the Final Fantasy games that I've played (other than Tactics). Yes, it's even better than VII. I have played this game on the SNES and the PlayStation, so I'm very curious to see that changes will be made for the Game Boy Advance release. But even if it's just a port, I'll gladly drop everything to go back and visit Terra, Locke, Shadow, Celes, Kefka, and the whole crew.

That's my list for now. You could probably spend 100 hours
or more with each of these games, but for the sake of being practical let's
assume that it will take about 40 hours to beach each one. If you add it up
that's 160 hours of game time, which is more than enough to blow your entire
Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. And that's just four games.

If you find yourself with more time, then by all means give
a look to Disgaea 2, Tales of the Abyss, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Valkyrie
Profile 2: Silmeria
, Baten Kaitos Origins, Xenosaga Episode III, Marvel:
Ultimate Alliance
, Final Fantasy III, Enchanted Arms, and Final Fantasy V
Advance
.

This time of year in the video game world is a lot like when your family comes over for Thanksgiving, and each person brings some
delicious dish or dessert. You want to eat it all, but if you're not careful
you'll end up filling up on your Mom's mashed potatoes and you'll never make it
to your Sister In-Law's pumpkin pie. I find myself in a similar predicament
now. Beyond all the games I'll end up reviewing, I have to make time for
Guitar Hero II, Gears of War, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. And I still haven't had
time to finish Dead Rising or Okami...

You have delivered the very reasons I limit my role-playing participation. It is certainly not for the lack of options, but for the very robust offerings available. I sitll have untouched versions of Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, FFIV, and FFVI waiting for me. I was in the midst of developing a persistent NWN2 world with a team of developers. I am in the midst of the last chapter of FFX-2, on the brink of defeating the final boss in FFII, and only a quarter of the way through FFI. How in the world can I hope to tackle FFXII or plunge into Oblivion? Simply stated, I cannot. . . but that doesn't mean I don't want to.

Thanks for pointing out what I think is a huge issue. I have a pretty robust collection of video games, but in all honesty, unless it's available in portable form, I've probably only played it for fifteen minutes.
With the PS3 and Wii release upon us, I've decided that for this new generation, I will only invest my time in the best of the best as well (especially at $59.99 a pop). The rest of the time? Well, let's just I really appreciate backwards compatibility. I STILL have sealed PSX games.

Also, thanks to you, I think we have the final word as to which Final Fantasy game is the best! You hear that FFVII fanboys? Aeris died - get over it. Kefka is superior to Sephiroth, and by association, since the FFVI team took him on, they are superior.
And yes, Relm can beat up Cloud.

I totally agree. I have a huge collection of games and 0 time to play them. I'm to the point where I'm wasting my money on the lotto.

"It may be developed by Obsidian rather than BioWare, but those guys did a great job with KOTOR 2"

I have to disagree with that - KOTOR 2 was largely an unfinished, buggy game. That may or may not have been the fault of the distributor putting on pressure, but the fact remains that KOTOR 1 was a much better game, I think. Certainly on the point of immersion, it had a stronger storyline with more compelling characters, I would say, but hey - that's me.

That said - I am certainly looking forward to NWN 2!

with more then 2,000 games, finding time to play even half of them is quite difficult, I sometimes play multiple at the same time, the exact same time...

I totally feel your pain man. Sometimes it really sucks having such diverse taste. Yet, at the same time, it's really great because, no matter what, you will always be playing great games no matter the genre.

so many games, so little time T_T

At the current pace I'm finishing my games (I have finished less than 30 games in my life), with a library of wellllll over 1000 games I own, I have about 4 lifetimes of gaming at home-- there's just no way I'll ever finish 'em.

somehow though, It feels good to know that ... IF I want to, I can. Slap me silly and call me Charlie.

I'm so glad to find someone who agrees that the best numbered final fantasy was 6. Thank you

I can really see what you're getting at, Greg. I, for one, have a HUGE backlog with the current-gen systems. My PS2 still has Xenosagas to share with me, Wild Arms to hold me up with, not to mention a Devil or three waiting to Cry. But the real problem is my Gamecube... I got Odama, Metroid Prime 2, Pikmins, Batallion Wars and a whole lot more to play on that. Incredibly, I managed to get through Baten Kaitos during the December-January vacation, but have yet to scratch the surface of Tales of Symphonia.

It's a really serious problem, time and the stuff to do. When I have time to rest a bit from working on my graduation paper, I can't really play games, 'cause I got to read the books for the next chapter, or I'm too tired mentally do get really immersed into a game. It's the big problem of the age, really. You hit a big subject there.

By the way, you really SHOULD play Final Fantasy VIII.

Who wouldn't? It's a great game. I'd suggest you play it again on SNES or PSX but, like you said, there are so many other RPGs out there you still need to play.

This is why I always thought games should be shorter and less expensive. Then if the game does well, you can make a sequal with quicker turn around due to the shorter length. I am always wondering at what point to stop playing a game where my enjoyment return is becoming pretty marginal in my effort to finish yet I want to finish to feel the sense of accomplishment. I waste some valuable game play time this way.

I'm in complete agreement! I'm so backlogged that sometimes I don't even want to game 'cause it's just too overwhelming. I'm very conflicted/broke.

Oh, and thank you! FFVI IS the best one so far.

with so many great games and so little time i sometimes lose any interest in the games, because at the same time i am playing a game another one that interests me just as much as the one im playing comes out and so on. some gamers complain about games being short but with so many great games out there i don't mind a game being 10 hours long. (action games at least)

Ya, I know what you mean about the RPG back-log, mine gets bigger all the time it seems **sigh**

I can't wait to play Oblivion, gotta wait for my PS3 tho.

I hardly ever finish games. There is just so little time to play and so many cool new games coming out. I've played about 10 hours of Oblivion but got sidetracked on Dead Rising. I'm hooked on NHL 07 now but will abandon that for Tiger Woods next week. All the while poor Oblivion, which is a great game, sits unused. It's a losing battle... curse my short attention span!

All very good points, especially the FFVI part. I agree with sergestorm, games should be shorter and cheaper. There is a point in a games life that it starts to become a drag and you just play it to finish it not to enjoy it. It really sucks when in an RPG they put a lot of filler material just so the game has 80 hours worth of gameplay. I would prefer 30 hours of good story and gameplay any day. This day in age with so many options people are starting to realize that buying all the great games doesnt necesarilly mean you´ll get to enjoy them, so people are starting to buy and play what they can handle. It´s like going on a diet.

I still have a backlog all the way to PSX concerning RPG's. Getting older means less time to game, let alone play an RPG. I keep saying I am gonna sell them on Ebay but I can't bring myself to do that. Now I make sure I only buy RPG's I will play right away and I have 17 days to go till the next one.

Hey Greg, lovin' the Devo references, mate!
Posted Dec 6, 2006 7:09 am PT
Oh man, this is exactly how I feel. RPG is my favorite genre but I have so many unfinished RPGs and RPGs I haven't even touched, it just awful. And then there are the other games I want to play...

Devo references?
Posted Feb 2, 2007 4:51 pm PT
Ugh, my backlog at this point is... somewhat monstrous. I'm hoping to have it cleared by November, but several of the titles are for the PC and I need to upgrade, so... doubt that'll happen. Oblivion was at the top of my list, but the 360 helped with that. Dead Rising and Okami seem to be on a lot of people's backogs - I only know two people who've completed Okami, that's very interesting.

I wish (or maybe not.. not sure..) I could be in the same mess as you are in.. to come back on your Thanksgiving example, In my case it would well be that all those "deserts" which I didn't get to finish get stocked up in the freezer, for me to eat up later.. yet, having the possibility of doing everything there is to do in the games I own, it leaves the boredom of eventually being through with everything and with that in mind it leaves me being torn.. I can't get to complete all my games, I guess I unconciously realise there's not gonna be a huge investment in games for a while, at least for my part.. With that being said I'll be stuck with all the games I have, do I even want to complete them, knowing full well I'll end up having nothing left to do.. I find having things to do (except chores.. I hope you all realise that is not even close to what I am talking about) a real motivator to actually doing them.. If they keep piling up I can really get a move on game hours on end.. yet if they stop piling up.. my motivation takes a plummit and I end up stopping to game untill I have more options..

don't play JRPGs if you don't like them like Shining force EXA, its a great game. Superb graphics and the action is good and I actually don't have a problem with the voice acting. The lags rarely occur in my game, and I love it. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like you, I just don't like your review of EXA. Can it be replaced? But I love your other reviews.
