The Emmy's were on last night. I'm not a huge fan of the award show since the hosts are always usually duds (remember last year's ceremony?) and I watch only a couple of the nominated shows (this year I had three: the now-defunct Pushing Daisies, may it rest in peace, How I Met Your Mother, and Family Guy), but I try to catch it every year anyway. This year I actually had somethings to tune in for: Kristen Chenoweth's nomination, How I Met Your Mother's nomination, and Neil Patrick Harris as a host. Here are the eight things I liked about last night's Emmy's:
1. NPH's opening song ("Straight from Mad Men, there's Joan, Oh the curves she has shown/ could make a blind man say 'Damn'/She could turn a gay straight, oh wait, never mind, there's Jon Hamm...") and monologue. Especially the bit about the endagered theme songs. On Lost's lack of one, he stated that "the last time there were people on a desert island, there was a song about it, and dagnabbit, it was awesome!"
2. The breaking of the award shows according to genre. It was good for people who only cared about comedy, but if you wanted to know who won for comedy series, you had to stick around till the end. 30 Rock took the trophy, and really who didn't see that coming?
3. Kristen Chenoweth taking it home for Pushing Daisies. In her acceptance speech she chirped, ""I'm unemployed now, so I'd like to be on 'Mad Men.' I also like 'The Office' and '24.'" Suck it, ABC, for cancelling that little brilliant show.
4. Toni Collette taking Best Actress in a Comedy Series. Tina Fey has to many awards, she doesn't need any more.
5. NPH's little bit after losing the Supporting Actor Award to Jon Cryer ("It's not awkward. I won't let it get awkward."). He even demanded that Jon Cryer open the envelope to show proof that the Emmy truly belongs to him and yelled to the backstage guys to cut away after we get a glimpse of the name.
6. Jimmy Fallon singing in an electronic voice 'Everybody Ready To Party', and promptly falling on his a** and calling for help in the same voice.
7. The Dr. Horrible Interception
8. Ricky Gervais's little speech before presenting an award: "This is the greatest awards ceremony in the world, definitely ... Thing about the Oscars and the Golden Globes is they got film stars there, with their jawlines and chiseled looks, making me feel bad. But in this room ... I'm probably above average. Steve Carell is considered handsome! Rainn Wilson ... no, we've got to be honest. He is weird, even in this company."
NPH was a fantastic host and was a big step-up from last year's multiple hosts (Who thought that was a good idea?) Here's hoping that we'll see him again next year.
