My work place has banned GameSpot and other gaming websites for use in the office. So, now I have to wait until I get home from work to do my Gamespotting. Does anybody else have this problem? Also, are there ways around this?

Thats too bad. You can probably get around it though

that blows - but I have other friends with the same problem.

If you got a serious injury and went on disability you would not have to worry about being controlled at work

My workplace banned it during office hours, lunch times are okay, but should I need to check something in the day I go through...

www.ninjacloak.com

... which bypasses the lock.

That sucks!
Think of it as your teacher won't allow u to use computer in class except when we have to search data on internet. That's what I'm facing now.
Posted Sep 17, 2009 6:06 am PT
Thank God that thats not the case with me. This is the only site that I go to when I'm at the office. Funny though, they have been trying to band out sites and one of them was hotmail.com. I talked to them about it because its one of my main source of emails, and the guy told me " I'm only doing this for one day. Tomorrow, you will be able to surf the internet freely." It seems to me like the tech dude wasn't taking his job so seriously.

Sorry to hear that, The college I went about a year ago had the same problem I couldn't go on any gaiming sites including Gamespot but luckly it came back up online because alot of people were complaining about it too.

I have school, so I couldn't anyway. It's a shame your activity will be numbed down a bit though

big brother creeping in everywhere.

the only way I know around it is to get a blackberry or use a laptop that doesn't go through the network at your workplace. ~

since we are on the subject of big brother, tell everyone you know NOT to get the swine flu vaccine. if you want more info google [david icke + swine flu] for a youtube interview.

Shame

Too bad I've gone through stretches at work where I couldn't bring up Gamespot, then after about a week or so I could get back on. I'm curious about some of these other sites that were mentioned.

As a worker, I say ridiculous.

If I were an owner, I'm sure I'd have a different opinion
Posted Sep 18, 2009 6:40 am PT
Oh no...that's really lame. Guess they don't want you messing around during work. Um...I don't have that problem so can't help you. Usually they ban gambling and porn. Didn't know they banned things like GS. Good luck getting it figured out.
Posted Sep 18, 2009 1:08 pm PT
Guess you need to get a mobile phone with internet so you can check it via that.
Posted Sep 18, 2009 3:26 pm PT
Congrats for the spotlight.
Posted Sep 18, 2009 4:20 pm PT
Oh that really stinks. Hope you find something else to keep you occupied.

A lot of workplaces have to worry about their internet bills, which are often driven by bandwidth used. GS eats a lot of bandwidth.

Proxies of all kinds, including free public ones, can often get you around this kind of thing. But sooner or later the IT guys might still come after you. Bandwidth consumption isn't that hard to spot, regardless of where it's going to.

To stay out of trouble, the best thing to do is to get some kind of wireless internet access from a device of your own (laptop, handheld, etc.). Then it's just a matter of where you can use it - you might still be able to use it from your desk, or not, depending on policies and signal reception. But that'll pretty much be it as far as willy nilly attempts at shaping *your* traffic.

Good luck!

Don't work as much, or just make up for it on the weekend. Congrats on the Spotlight btw.

@PLZKLLME0080 - Thanks for the site but unfortunately I can't download stuff on my work computer without asking the IT guy first.

@SavoyPrime - That's so funny that you said that but our IT guy thinks that CNN stands for Communist News Network.

@Allicrombie - Yep...

@reo-117 - Some days I do miss the free and fast internet at college.

@DouglasBuffone - I've tried somethings like going to GS using the IP address in the address bar but that didn't work.

@iowastate - A disability might change things if I had to work from home but that would be a little too painful.

@grigjd3 & @ebbderelict - Yep.

@TTDog - Excellent! I'll have to try this out. It should work for a few times until they block that site too. The IT department is also watching out internet searches unfortunately.

@Kleeyook - Looks like we are in the same boat.

@TeabagChampion - I didn't have this problem at my old job. In fact, last year I watched the entire E3 at the office and nobody said anything.

@benleslie5 - Yeah, GS is blocked because it falls under the computer games category. This site is just for news and reviews like FoxNews, CNN, etc... You don't actually play games here.

@SGTiD1NG0 - Well I'm going to try and keep my activity up on this site, because I like hanging around here. Just now I'll have to do it at different times.

@tinoshke - Yep.

@sequekhan -

@phoenyx9 - You know I had to use my friend's iPhone just to see the NHL 10 review since that was the first day GS was blocked. Also, thanks for the update on the swine flu vaccine. I wasn't planning on getting it because the past two years I would get the regular flu shot and then get the flu the following week.

@indzman - Totally.

@celtic1962 - Yeah, the power of people is great. I'm going to try out some of sites mentioned too.

@3KindgomsRandy - Haha, you know that's very true. I wonder what I would do in that position. Thanks a lot Randy for playing "Devil's advocate".

@Whitewolf725 - GS is banned because it falls under the computer games category. Which is stupid because you not playing games on this site. It's just for news and other information about games. Oh well, I guess I'll have to do work at work now.

@JodyR - That is definitely on my Christmas list now. Also, thanks for the member spotlight!

@canana - Thanks.

@hank_101 - I guess I'll just have to do work now.

@g_max_ - Thanks for the information. It sounds like you've had this happen to you or you are savvy IT guy yourself. Either way thanks!

@sequekhan - Thanks for your comment on the community blog btw.
Posted Sep 19, 2009 6:32 am PT
That's funny stuff.
Posted Sep 19, 2009 7:44 am PT
Yep, I have this problem too. Now, at office, I can only search for.... news, blegh, so boring.. But what else do I have to do at work? :-D
Posted Sep 19, 2009 7:48 am PT
NNNNOOOOOOOoooooooo..oooo......wait, you could get a Blackberry or something personal for web browsing.
Posted Sep 19, 2009 9:40 am PT
it is not an option you choose, but **** happens sometimes
Posted Sep 19, 2009 9:43 am PT
By the way, you were featured in the member spotlight this week. Make sure your about me page is all pretty as it's being displayed on the forums page. lol
Posted Sep 19, 2009 1:19 pm PT
If they won't let you download it there, you could always download it at home and bring it in on a thumb drive or something.
Posted Sep 19, 2009 1:55 pm PT
Haha, don't mention it mate.
Posted Sep 19, 2009 8:53 pm PT
Man that sucks. but if you go on you should only be on it for a short amount of time.

THAT,S TOO BAD MAN
Posted Sep 21, 2009 9:28 am PT
@SavoyPrime -

@Bazza28 - Yeah, I guess we'll actually have to do work.

@DoctorBedlam - That's probably my best option at the moment.

@iowastate - True.

@JodyR - I noticed it once I received the emblem and the first thing I did was check out my "about me" section.

@PLZKLLME0080 - Download GameSpot?

@sequekhan -

@bigsw4l - That's what I was doing. Just checking updates and such. But no more.

@rouel989 - Yeah, it sucks.
Posted Sep 21, 2009 7:22 pm PT
No I'm talking about ultrasurf. First comment lol. Try downloading that from home and transporting it in from work.
Posted Sep 21, 2009 9:07 pm PT
that sucks man... i'm sorry for you
Posted Sep 21, 2009 9:38 pm PT
If you can get YouTube at work, we get alot of our original content uploaded there for non-GameSpot viewing. http://www.youtube.com/gamespot
Posted Sep 22, 2009 8:54 am PT
That sucks I would try a proxy.
Posted Sep 22, 2009 1:38 pm PT
Nice tip from stanley. The same goes with www.twitter.com/gamespot at work. Do they let you have that as well? You may not be able to see the links but you can definitely know what was recently posted to check when you get home. By the way, my evil plan was to mention some tips for those of us who get gaming sites blocked in this week's community report. So, keep those tips coming! /ends hijack to Garrison_Ford's blog.
Posted Sep 22, 2009 4:14 pm PT

Posted Sep 22, 2009 10:24 pm PT
That's a bummer. Good luck finding a way around it!
Posted Sep 23, 2009 3:18 pm PT
@PLZKLLME0080 - Ah, duh. I'm not firing on all cylinders today.

@ZeldaRocks9 - Yeah...unfortunately.

@StanleyL - That's a great idea but YouTube was the first thing they blocked.

@shade2323 - An proxies in mind?

@JodyR - Well I can still get on facebook so I'm assuming that twitter is still available. Thanks for the tip. Oh and hijack away!! I don't mind!

@ZEYAAM898 - Huh?

@msudude211 - Yeah, there have been some really good tips on here that I still need to try out.
Posted Sep 23, 2009 7:00 pm PT
