That's pretty much what was told to me when I picked up the phone.
I'd been lying in bed, still not up for the day. I heard the phone ringing, and you know how that goes. I didn't want to roll over to answer it, but I did.
I got one of the most initially startling calls I've ever had. On the other end spoke the general manager of the store to which I'd recently applied for the manager-in-training position.
I'd waited about a week to hear something. Worried, I'd sent another email to the district manager just the day before expressing my continued interest in the position. At that point, I'd become a little sceptical as to whether I'd been chosen for the job...in fact, I thought another was luckier (or more qualified) than I.
The general manager seemed a little hesitant at first. She said, "Nathan, the district manager wanted me to call you and ask what is this on your police record about a murder 1 investigation."
After a few brief seconds of experiencing a mixture of waking up and being totally confused by what I'd just heard, I responded, "A what?"
She waited a second and then said, "Just kidding. The district manager told me to mess with you. You start on Monday."
I got the job.
