Well, before I get to #25-21 of my top 30 Keith Green songs, I have to let you all know what's been going on in my life recently. Things have been pretty hectic. I'm really enjoying my Criminal Justice c l a s s and I barely even have to study for it, as most of the material just comes natural to me. I wish I could say the same for Music Appreciation ![]()
My MA teacher seems to feel that her c l a s s is more important than anything else in life. This week, for instance I have about 80 pages of reading on the Baroque period (which includes about 100 terms I have to study), studying for a test on the Renaissance music period and working on a research paper on the societal ways and means during a specific period of musical advancement...try saying that 5 times fast! This paper, btw is due in less than 2 weeks...somebody shoot me.....
This however pales to my work situation. I was transferred to a different High School last week to work 1 on 1 with an autistic boy who thinks we should all bend over and kiss his a** and treat him better than all the other students. On my second day working with him he referred to me as a "fat F*****" and "stupid piece of s*** moron". And here's the kicker...because that's part of his disability there isn't a dang thing we can do to stop him from saying whatever he wants to. The next day got better when he ran from me while waiting for someone to pick him up. He told me to "make him" stop. Yeah right. Sigh. Okay, ventings over. Now onto the music ![]()

Make My Life A Prayer To You
Make my life a prayer to You,
I want to do what you want me to,
No empty words and no white lies,
No token prayers, no compromise,
I want to shine the light you gave,
Through Your Son, you sent to save us,
From ourselves and our despair,
It comforts me to know you're really there.
Oh, I want to thank you now, for being patient with me,
Oh, it's so hard to see, when my eyes are on me,
I guess I'll have to trust and just believe what you say,
Oh, you're coming again, coming to take me away,
I want to die, and let you give,
Your life to me, so I might live,
And share the hope you gave to me,
The love that set me free,
I want to tell the world out there,
You're not some fable or fairy tail,
That I made up inside my head,
You're God, The Son, you've risen from the dead.
Oh, I want to thank you now,
For being patient with me,
Oh, it's so hard to see,
When my eyes are on me,
I guess I'll have to trust,
and just believe what you say,
Oh, you're coming again,
Coming to take me away.
I want to die, and let you give,
Your life to me, so I might give,
And share the hope you gave to me,
I want to share the love that set me free.
This is a great song that really addresses our human frailties, and Keith's desire to totally die to everything that he saw as getting in the way of his being wholly and totally devoted to following God.

How Can They Live Without Jesus?
How can they live without Jesus?
How can they live without God's love?
How can they feel so at home down here,
When there's so much more up above?
Throwing away the things that matter,
They hold onto things that don't.
The world has gone crazy, but soon maybe,
A lot more are going to know.
For maybe they don't understand it,
Or maybe they just haven't heard.
Or maybe we're not doing all we can,
Living up to His Holy Word.
Cause phonies have come and wrongs been done,
Even killing in Jesus' name.
And if you've been burnt, here's what I've learned,
The Lord's not the one to blame.
For He's not just religion with steeples and bells,
Or a sales man who will sell you the things you just want to hear.
But His love was such, that he suffered so much,
To call some of us just to follow, follow.
So many laughing at Jesus,
While the funniest thing that He's done,
Is love this whole stubborn rebellious world,
While their hate for Him just goes on.
And love just like that will bring him back,
For the few He can call His friends.
The ones He's found true who've made it through,
Enduring until the end.
The one's He's found true, who've made it through,
Enduring until the end...
This song asks that age old question "why would we want to live down here when there's so much more up there?" It also expresses a real issue Keith struggled with, which was the necessity to take the good news to all the ends of the earth.

The Victor
Swallowed into Earth's dark womb,
Death has triumphed, that's what they say,
But try to hold Him in the tomb,
The Son of Life, rose on the third day.
Just look, the gates of hell, they're falling,
Crumbling from the inside out,
He's bursting through the walls with laughter,
Listen to the Angels shout!
It is finished, He has done it,
Life conquer death, Jesus Christ, has won it!
His plan of battle, you know, it fooled them all,
They led Him off to prison to die,
But as He entered Hades Hall,
He broke those hellish chains with a cry.
Just listen to those demons screaming,
See Him bruise the serpent's head,
The prisoners of Hell, He's redeeming,
All the power of death is dead!
It is finished, He has done it,
Life conquer death, Jesus Christ, has won it!
Just look, the gates of hell, they're falling,
Crumbling from the inside out,
He's bursting through the walls with laughter,
Listen to the Angels shout!
It is finished, He has done it,
Life conquer death, Jesus Christ, has won it!
This song used to be much higher on my list until I heard it sung by a woman named Jamie Owens-Collins. Her vocal range is much more suited to this song as it has several extremely high parts. Nevertheless, Keith's version is also good...hers is just a little bit better.

When I First Trusted You
Well I though I depended upon you.
At least that used to be what was happening with me.
In those times of our first sweet communion,
Nothing got in the way, I heard your voice everyday.
When I first trusted you, gave my life to you.
When I trusted you.
Well there's something that needs to be cleared up.
I feel so sorry inside, that my first love has died.
Cause I've tried in my own strength to follow.
When I've known all along, I just couldn't go wrong.
If I'd only trusted you, give my life to you.
If I'd trusted you. Ooh, trusted you.
Well I though I depended upon you.
At least that used to be what was happening with me.
In those times of our first sweet communion,
Nothing got in the way, I heard your voice everyday.
When I first trusted you, I gave my life to you.
When I trusted you.
This is really a wonderful song that addresses something that happens to every Christian at some time in their walk with God. Namely, after a while we get beat up by the world and we get our eyes off of God and onto ourselves. This song is about a person who realizes that is what's happened and it is his desire for things to be like they were "when he first trusted God."

The Lord is My Shepherd
The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want,
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside the still waters,
He restoreth my soul, and guides my path in righteousness for His namesake.
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the House of The Lord, for ever and ever and ever.
Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will not fear, thou are with me.
Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me,
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies......
Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup's overflowing
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord, for ever, and ever and ever.
The Lord is My Shepherd, I shall not want.
This song is basically the 23rd Psalm set to music. It's very moving and Keith brings a lot of passion into it.
