GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

I decided that this week I wanted to show you all a freeware game that could rival those to be found on shelves or Xbox Live. The problem however wasn't that I couldn't find one, but rather that I had difficulty choosing between them. There are several that I'm quite fond of, but finally I decided on the one that I felt was the most inherently addicting (when all else fails look to the series title eh?). That game is simply titled N.

N1

N, sometimes refereed to by its tagline "The Way of the Ninja," is a simple and slickly designed 2D action puzzle flash game in which you don the role of the Ninja, a tiny ninja man with a metabolism so fast that he's capable of performing amazing physical feats. The down side to this ability is that his life span is measured in mere minutes unless he can accumulate gold, of all things, which increases his stamina. Collecting gold though is not his main objective. Instead the goal of each level is to quite simply reach the exit. Thats simpler said than done however as the exit is usually guarded by a layer of switch activated doors, machine guns, lazier turrets, hovering mines and mindless automatons. Its your job to run, jump and wall slide with exacting precision to avoid each trap, flip every switch and reach the end goal all before the clock runs out. Oh, and the timer caries over so if you only just squeak a level in under the wire, the next level will only be that much harder.

N2

N3

This game can be brutal. For all its simplicity the levels are expertly designed to constantly provide new challenges. In one level you be climbing up level after level crawling with motion detecting robots to reach a switch only to be forced to climb your way back down again to reach the door, in another you be leaping from one precarious rounded perch to another all under the constant gaze of a lazier turret. And during all of this you'll be trying to weigh the benefits of trying to reach that next out of the way load of gold to help ease some of the time pressure you're always under. The controls are equally simple and responsive with the traditional WASD setup and one button for jumping. The entire game simply oozes polish and its simple design combined with constantly evolving challenges (there are roughly 400-500 individual levels in the game) will likely keep anyone glued to their computer once they start playing. If you want a simple game to play between bouts of Bioshock or Halo 3 this is definitely a good option.

Update: While I'm talking about excellent flash games I though I'd mention a particularly good looking flash game still in development called Aquaria. In short, its a free roaming Metroid ****game set in an under water fantasy land... I mean sea. No, This one wont be free. You'll probably find it running about $20 online (I'd guess somewhere like steam). I've been watching this one fairly intently and have high expectations based on what I've seen. Speaking of what I've seen, They just released a fairly long gameplay video on Youtube. Notice how good the music and voice acting is. Wow!

Update to Update: S T Y L E is a censored word!? Give me a break!

I haven't tracked you back until now, Fade2Gray, because I never really cared about your blogging topics (no offense intended). But now you are writing about something different and kinda cool: online flash games. I don't know of anyone else on Gamespot reviewing flash games, and it can be tough to weed through the garbage to get to the occasional Chaos Faction. For this, I track you, and give you a hearty kudos on a well-founded blogging topic.

I look forward to expansions into Newgrounds and Miniclip.

@Monoco: Glad I could help you find one of those hidden gems of the internet. I'd love to hear your reaction to the game, and let me know how you think my blog stacked up to what you experienced. That goes for anyone else who tries it too!

@Bozanimal: Thanks for the Kudos Bozanimal.I think I should be able to continue tracking down a good flash game or two from time to time (in fact I already have another one in mind). I'm a big fan of freeware games in general so I'll definitely be bring more freedom to the masses (or at least my readers).

Good post. I downloaded N a couple of years ago and I got hooked. I wish they would release it on Xbox Live or something. It's a wonderfully challenging game and it acted as a perfect study break when I was in grad school. The controls are responsive, the level designs are devious and the pace is always frantic. I've probably cleared a total of 50 levels out of the 400 or so on offer, which is to say, there's a lot of replay value. While this isn't exactly a new find, I commend you on spreading the word, keep it up!

yup, words like S T Y L E and C L A S S contain HTML links, even in wordpad and notepad they are forbidden. And N was on our school website a while ago, got so hooked on it. Completed it once legit and again using the 1st party cheats. Fun!

I've played N fairly extensively. I was introduced by a tech friend of my, who happens to be horrible at video games, and I spent about an hour and a half showing of my super jumping platforming skills. I love N, the jumping ability of the ninja character puts Mario to shame. I also love the missiles and lasers found in some of the stages. It is an incredibly well made game, even more so given its price.

Thanks for all the comments everybody. I'm glad I managed to strike a few new people's fancies.

It's all fun and games!

One guy says: "User request is what computers are for!"

And another replies "Doing our business is what computers are for!"
(Guess the movie)

I Say "Doing our gaming is what computers are for" and my home computer doesn't even have Office installed in it!

So Fade, do you know stuff about Case ventilation? See it's getting pretty hot inside my case (Coolermaster Mystique) to the point that I can ocasionally feel the hot air in my face. Team Fortress 2 is causing it.
Posted Sep 21, 2007 3:37 pm PT
Hm, not really an expert there, but I'll give you what basics I know (though I doubt it'll be anything you haven't already heard). For one, its typically a good Idea to keep the airflow balanced (i.e. same number of fans blowing in as out). I'd say keep a fan on the side facing in towards the CPU if thats an option, so that fresh air is coming straight to the heat sink, and a large fan in the back drawing air out to keep a balanced flow. From the searches I did most of the Coolermaster Mystiques I saw didn't give an option for a top fan or front fans. In my opinion top fans are extremely useful. The laws of science dictate that heat rises, so a top fan can suck all that hot air out (I know the air coming out my top fan is always the hottest).

Something that has nothing to do with hardware that many people overlook but has a major impact on heat is the computer's environment. things like PC cabinets are a big no-no as they severely limit air flow around the computer. The floor is also a bad idea as carpets build up heat reflecting it back at the computer, and all floors (carpeted or not) tend to collect dust and debris that often gets sucked up by your computer and clogs things like your heat sink. The best place for a desktop is, well, your desktop. Up there theres plenty of open air and much less debris.

Speaking of debris, you probably also want to check the inside of you computer for dust once in a while. Here's a good guide for how to do that.
http://www.computerhope.com/cleaning.htm

Lastly, if none of that helps you may want to consider a new case for your next big upgrade. Find something with lots of places for fans, with an emphasis on one with a top fan (it amazes me how many still don't have them) , and lots of open space inside. The open space will make hardware upgrades easier and improve that all important airflow.

Wow, I had more to say than I thought on the issue. Hope that helps.

Wow man thanks! I had the side fan sucking air OUT as well.

I don't know how this affects your take on this, but I don't have a regular heatsink for the CPU, rather I have a watercooled device that really brought arround 20 C less. Still I'll do as you suggest, I'll turn the side fan the otherway so that it blows air in, while the one in the back sucks it out. The Mystique also has one fan in the front that I believe sucks air into the harddrives but that's just in.

Thank you very much!

Alas, some of the heat must be coming from a pair of X1950's stuck in there as well, for the CPU temp is always less than 45 C no matter how heavily I game.
Posted Sep 22, 2007 1:51 am PT
Like my friend said if you turn that fan on the side around it will cool the whole system down significantly and the positioning of your desktop pc is also very important on keeping it cool and make sure you have space between your x1950's built in fan and nothing right next to it(cards side by side) or it cant get air in to cool the card
Posted Sep 22, 2007 9:33 am PT
@arcadius with further research I'm assuming you have the xfire set which are put side by side which makes no sense cooling wise but make sure you have no cards near the outer fan of the two, you need at least one space, and turn the fan around on the side and your cooling problem should go away.
Posted Sep 22, 2007 9:40 am PT
Well, considering you've already got a liquid cooling system for the CPU you could (if you wanted to be more adventurous than I'd likely be) try researching how to pull the stock heat sinks off your GPUs and attach them to the liquid system. I've heard that there are ways to do that but I have no real experience there. As for the side fan, the fact that the CPU is liquid cooled makes it a little less important that the side fan specifically blows in so long as everything is generally balanced. The front fan blowing in is still a good idea for the reason you said (though I've heard that HDDs can be attached to liquid cooling systems too). Good luck with you heat issues; you've pretty much pumped my brain dry now.

Thanks Graphicartist21, and yes the xfire set that I have is the one you describe. I have the 975 XBX2 or something "the Bad Axe2" intel Mobo, and yes, the Cards are practically side by side, there's still a slot between the second of the cards and a XFI soundcard so there they get some breathing space. The movo has 3 PCIe slots probably for a Crossfire setup and a PhysX card, which in turn would be friggin' awesome rig!

@Fade: Oh man, I'm an enthusiast, not an adventurer, last time I tried to be one I fried a mobo and a Radeon 9800. The Liquid Cooling solution is a Coolermaster device, it quite simple, but I wouldn't dare connecting the X1950's to it, also there's no way to do this that I can observe. Thanks for your advice guys. I've always regarded help in friends blog more errr helpful than the other forums or the darned Hardware forum here in GS.

I just got a 1950 myself a few months back. Aside from the heat issues, hows the crossfire working out for you? I'm eventually (as in if I ever manage to scrape together the money) going to upgrade my CPU and get a new MoBo with an extra PCIe slot in the process. I'm just curious if the extra money for a second GPU is worth it.

I would recommend looking into geforce, you wont have the heat problems and have a good name as graphic cards are concerned
"Selected as one of the Best Products of the Year in the July 2007 issue of PC World, the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX offers mind-blowing performance, unparalleled levels of graphics realism and effects, and full support for the hottest DirectX® 10 and DirectX 9 games available."
they also have the Geforce 8800 ultra now too.

Ahh heat problems were never an issue with the xfire. Until now that is. And I'm not even sure that's the issue here! Inside my case it looks like the jungles of Vietnam! There's no space anywhere, but I can't help it, the PSU that was recommended for the ATIs and the CPU has a LOT of cables. Its this intel board, the Bad Axe2, it has the slots too close together, my previous rig had an Asus A8R32 MVP mobo and the pcie slots were very well placed allowing breathing space between the cards. As far as performance is concerned, (with Crossfire) you get to crank all the settings up in games! I did experience some strange issue with NWN2, in which, like WiC, it performed a lot better without enabling the crossfire option. Also in terms of 3DMarks, I use the 2005 edition and with xfire I pull some 16000, and without it I get 12000 or so. the 1950XTX is still a great card! OMG!!! I just checked the Case internat temp and its at 43 C! a long shot from the 53 C it had before, and that's just by turning the fan arround! Now I'm gonna do some serious gaming just to see what happens! Thanks a lot guys!

@Graphicartist21: I can't look into Geforce now...I have too much $$$ invested in ATI, and not in stock I assure you! Damn MoBo and the cards cost me an arm and a leg, so it's gonna be ATI for me...

Also there's this GeForce FX fiasco thing that I can't get out of my mind...
Posted Sep 22, 2007 8:09 pm PT
I'd like to take credit for the tep. drop but 10C is a heck of a lot to get out of turning a fan around! Glad I could help though, and thanks for the feedback on crossfire. Now all I need to do is figure out where I'm gonna get nearly a grand to finance my evil schemes. Maybe I'll set up a small scale pyramid scheme... Oh! You didn't hear that!
Posted Sep 22, 2007 11:20 pm PT
nah, you won't need a grand, the X1950 is arround 250 US right now. And if you want to upgrade to that damned expensive DDR3, have a Core 2 CPU, there's a nice Asus Mobo with the P35 chip and a crossfire interfase.
Posted Sep 23, 2007 9:44 am PT
I was actually talking more about for the whole shebang; GPU, CPU and Mobo. It'll probably come to around $600-700 before taxes (which I have to pay even on-line thanks to over-zealous CA state laws). It'll take me quite a while to get that much set aside due to my now life consuming credentialing program.
Posted Sep 23, 2007 11:14 am PT
Well, it's official, after turning the Fan arround, and after 3 hours of WiC gaming the case temp went up to 48C, which is a long shot from the 53C it had when idle. You guys should write for Toms Hardware Guide.

Glad to help but it was fade2grays ideas more and i really just backed them up and added a few extra pointers

So what's with the doomesque creature Fade uses as an avatar? It reminds me of the origina doom.
Posted Sep 24, 2007 2:45 pm PT
Thanks, I really like it when I 'actually' manage to do some good. You said you had a lot of loose cables hanging around before. Did you get those cleaned up while turning the fan around? If you did that could have been a major factor in your temp. drop too.
Posted Sep 24, 2007 2:46 pm PT
naaa those cables that remind me of the song "Welcome to the Jungle"...hmm in fact I should rig the rig so that when the case is opened the song starts playin'! Anyways, the cables are crammed far from the fan's location, more like close to where the X1950's 6 pin connections. Also close to the Hard Drives, so no, it's all you man. In fact I'm gonna take a picture of the Jungle and post it on my images.

so what's with your avatar man?
