I recently met up with this guy I know from school who likes to play paper RPGs. I used to play a bit when I was younger, and we got talking about it. I expressed my interest in playing and we set up a time. So far all we have done is create characters, but it's going to be a blast and I am really excited to start playing again. I keep playing with my dice for no reason at all. I feel like an excited, goofy idiot. I can't wait 'til Friday.

Can't say I have, but enjoy yourself. I know what its like to go back to something you did when you were younger.

Not my cup of tea, but I'm glad you seem to like it.

Wow... I haven't played PnP AD&D in a LONG time. A group of us used to gather on the weekends and play for hours (sometimes until dawn!), but we drifted apart after a couple of years (though a few of us did move on to the L5R RPG). I still have a coffee can full of dice, too (I'd see a nice-looking set and buy it, even though I have at least 2 dozen complete sets waiting for me ).

Which edition are you playing? 2nd edition was, in my opinion, the best; 3rd ed. doesn't impress me much (I've been known to refer to it as the "everyone can be Driz'zt Do'Urden edition).

Anyway... enjoy!

@OrkHammer007: Yeah, I really like dice for some reason. I'd actually like to find a marble (or some other neat geologic substance) set sometime. I thought I might buy a new set for this go around, but I decided go ahead and use the awesome mismatched set that I used as a kid for old times sake. We are playing (or are going to play) version 3.5. So far, it seems kind of cool what with having all high rolls be good and low rolls be bad. Sometimes jumping around with all the high/low rolls in older editions got confusing. Also, it just seems like they have simplified some of the overly difficult aspects of the older versions. I used to play 2nd edition as well, and just may persuade my DM to switch. I always enjoyed it. I can't remember what setting we are playing right now. I also really want to play the Forgotten Realms setting. I never have and would love to visit, if you know what I mean. I have read so many of the old books. It's probably my favorite fantasy setting out there. That's really funny that you called 3rd edition that. I love Salvatore and have since I was a kid. Those books and other Forgotten Realms books of the era are really what got me into D&D.

They do (or did... it has been a while since I shopped for dice) make sets that LOOK like marble, pearl, or even crystal.

My biggest problem w/ 3.5 is the change to multicIassing: it used to be exclusive to demihumans (such as elves and dwarves) and made playing them attractive. With the new rules, demihumans aren't really special enough to play with, except as a role-playing challenge.

Also, the new rules allow you to be just a bit overpowered (much like Driz'zt is in the books), which is why I nicknamed the rules set the way i did.

If you are interested in Forgotten Realms, "Neverwinter Nights" takes place there, and is a pretty good game. I haven't played NWN2 yet (I have it, but haven't had time to install it yet), but I hear it's okay. (I'm REALLY old-school about campaign setting: My preference is Greyhawk, which I don't think TSR even puts out anymore.)

@OrkHammer: Actually, some of the dice that I have now do look like some of those substances.

Interesting. I never thought about the multiclass thing. That really makes sense, though. I don't think I'm going to multiclass anyway because I think I want to focus on the class I'm using.

Thanks for the tip on NWN. I will look into it. I actually played a game on the original Xbox called Demon Stone that was set in the Forgotten Realms. It was actually scripted by Salvatore and for a brief time in the game you could actually play as Drizzt. It was pretty cool.

Edit: Why does this thing let me space paragraphs sometimes and others not? It's annoying!! (This is rant not really directed at you.)
