I had a chance to watch all of the E3 press conferences this year. I think by far Microsoft was the clear winner, but overall I am really annoyed.
Nintendo is my favorite video game company and has been for my whole life. Call me a fanboy or whatever you will, but Nintendo will always hold a special place in this gamer's heart. I know that is slightly cheesy, but I do need to say a couple of things. For about a year now the Xbox 360 has been my favorite console. There are so many good games, I have a lot of fun playing on Xbox Live, and I love increasing my gamerscore. I think the Wii is a great console and I have had a lot of fun playing it, but I am not too pleased with Nintendo's current line-up of games. Animal Crossing is a sure buy for me, and I look forward to 1:1 control in Wii Sports Resort (more specifically the new games that will utilize the new Wii MotionPlus accessory), but that is all I was really impressed by in Nintendo's press conference. Sure, their sales numbers were impressive, but I want to hear about the games. I never thought I would say this, but for now Nintendo has seemed to abandon the hardcore gamers. This really makes me kind of sad. I know there will be other Zelda, Mario, Metroid, and Pikmin games, but where are the new IP's? We need something new, Nintendo. You have reinvented the market, you have reinvented control, you have reinvented games. But we need the next generation of Wii games for the harcore, not the casual crowd. I know Nintendo is absolutely banking on this casual crowd, and it makes sense for them to pursue this new crowd, but if they are not careful they are going to lose a whole lot of their most important crowd: the hardcore gamers that have stuck it out with Nintendo through the thick and thin. I am one of them. Please do not forget about us, Nintendo.
As for the rest of the press conference, Wii Music and Shaun White Snowboarding were pretty cool looking, but I am sure that I will not get those games. And although it is nice that the DS now has an exclusive GTA game, I have never liked GTA. Pokemon, Guitar Hero, and whatever else they mentioned I do not care about.
And I don't even need to say much about Sony. I was so bored for their press conference. Resistance 2 does look amazing, but with that lone exception, I was not impressed at all. Blah, blah, blah, "We are the best!" arrogant attitude all over again. Sony needs to get it together for real. The only game that I have been even playing in the half year that I have had my PS3 is Super Stardust HD, and I want something more. Admittedly, I have Metal Gear Solid 4 and have not had a chance to play it yet, but I have never been a huge fan of the series so I hope it's good.
Microsoft's press conference was well done, and focused on the games. Although, I am not too pleased with the new look of the Xbox Live experience, as they are calling it. Too much like Nintendo and Sony put together if you ask me. Microsoft, you have a good thing already, no need to screw it up with and overly clunky interface, and obviously Nintendo like avatars. This could quite honestly alienate many hardcore adult gamers. I have liked the adult look and feel of the Xbox since I have owned it, and there is no reason to make it feel any different. Nintendo has their market, and Microsoft has their own.
That aside, Gears 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3, RE5, and Banjo Kazooie all look awesome. But I think the biggest news is Final Fantasy XIII is coming to Xbox. This does not bode well for Sony at all. If they keep losing system exclusives, I don't see how they can come back this generation. Not that I personally want them to, but still. Anyway, you can count me in for getting XIII on 360. The future looks good for Microsoft. Let's see what they can pull off.
Lastly, I am really annoyed with Microsoft on this Bungie IP announcement cancellation , but I will post a separate blog on that altogether. Until then.
I have a goal to reach 14,000 gamerscore points by the end of the Fourth of July. I think this is entirely feasable considering how close I am, and how many games I have to play. Interestingly, my friend says she will give me "something special" if I reach that number by then. Um, now I don't expect anything drastic, so don't get any ideas. It's actually kind of a joke, but it sounds fun.
I hope to have it near 16,000 by the end of the summer and 20,000 isn't too far off.
I am an achievement junkie, and I love it!
I guess this is more like an extended review, but man, this game was a bore and a chore to play. I just recently reviewed it, so check out my review if you feel like it.
If they continue to make other Bourne games, I sure hope they improve this junk.
Although, most of the achievements were relatively easy to get just by playing through the game, so if you are in to that kind of thing, check it out. Just don't buy it.
