Some days it just feels like I'm living in some kind of weird parallel universe, and real life will resume soon. The last week or so has kind of been like that. To say I was a bit surprised to be told I was being made redundant is something of an understatment. There's probably not much point in my going into the ins and outs of it here, as it'll just get taken down, so I won't.

In celebration of my newly unemployed status, I am going to buy a dog on a piece of string and hang around on park benches drinking special brew. I've also decided I should have a mid-life crisis. True, I may be a bit young, but then if I get run over by a bus tomorrow, I've missed the opportunity somewhere in my early teens.

The trouble is, I'm not really sure what the deal is for women. I mean, we all know men start dating teenagers, buy a motorbike, and send off for miracle hair regrowth creams, but what do women do? Any suggestions welcome.

I'll only be updating this blog with a URL of my new one, and details of where I'm off to next, whenever I know. Thanks to all the readers I've corresponded with over the last couple of years, and all those who've emailed me and commented on my blog and stories. Take care

Sorry to hear that Unfortunately I've not got any suggestions for that mid-life crisis, but all the best in whatever comes next for you.

Hmm, it's such a shame you're gone. I'm curious as to what happened, but you don't need to (or seemingly want to) talk about it. In any event, I shall miss you greatly, as you seemed like a very cool woman. I look forward to your musings from a new word press blog (as every former GS employee gets them, it's the cool thing to do apparently), and know that you'll be missed, and cared for.

It's a shame you're gone, we'll all miss you .
Good luck .

Go to india for a few months, shave your head, work in an opium plantation, learn the native stone-carving techniques, dance under the moon, eat petrifiet rat. When thats all done, hop back on the horse. No point in doing it beforehand. You can only rise to the occasion when your low enough to hurt your neck looking for it. Special Brew ftw. You really will be missed, so dont be a stranger.

Yeah, sad to hear you're gone, Emma. You'll be missed. Keep us posted!

As for the midlife crisis thing...Mamma Mia just came out, you could probably go see that

My advice: start dating teenagers, buy a motorbike, and send off for miracle hair regrowth creams.

I had so many mid-life crisis when I was 10 years old. I broke my arm, i busted my ass so many times, I fell down some stairs too. I almos failed 5 grade. I just kind of delt with it. Things were no different, I just kep doing what I was doing and that it. That my advise. I lost jobs before, but it really dosen't make a difference. Why? regardless of what you do, you still need to get another job, so deal with it. Just, get up, like you always would and get another job. There is really no point in making your life miserable. If I dont get to read your entertaining blogs in the near future, it was a pleasure reading them and I wish you the best.

i hear the gamespot afterlife is called giant bomb. I dont know how much they need a UK branch but you might want to give them a call. Good luck with the future.

I heard about this via the GSUK forum. You should swing by there if you haven't already as there's a lot of people there with some nice messages for you.

To repeat what I said there though this is just awful news. Good luck with your next adventure!

lol don't worry about redundancy. live in ireland at the moment and everyone is being made redundant. it's impossible to get a job. and even the poles are leaving cause there are no jobs. but hell we've been through worse. come on recession : BRING IT!!!!!!

Oh, no! I am so very sorry for you--and for us. Nobody does game news like you do. I will truly miss your European insights, humor, and photo blogs. I hope you land a great new job soon, and that you avoid a severe midlife crisis (unless it involves many, many pints). GS will be a much less interesting read without you. Thank you for so many interesting stories and perspectives.

This is very sad news, when I heard about it I was really shocked. I wish you the the best of luck in the future. You will be miss by the the GSUK Community. Keep in touch, start your own blog, i would be interested in hearing about your new life outside Gamespot.

Good luck with whatever may be in your future, Emma.

Sorry to hear that emma, thanks for making me laugh with your press release stories and pics from your various travels. As for the mid life crisis thing I think a HUGE blond perm is the way to go and luminous orange permatan, thats what my sister did when she had a crisis . Good luck in whatever you do in the future, you will have plenty of people reading your new blog when you get it started.
Take care,

Ah that's well pants! You'll be missed by all us UK users.

I'm just repeating what others have said, but you shall be missed. Good luck in the future!
Posted Jul 13, 2008 3:51 am PT
All the best kiddo, good luck with everything you do.

One assumes that women in your situation would start dating older men and ride on the back of their motorbikes. Also, a change of hair color is pretty standard for women going through some sort of crisis. \

I've never really commented on any of your news articles or blog posts, but I've always been a fan of your writing. Good luck in whatever you end up doing in the future and be sure to keep us informed!

GS gets rid of another great staff member...are they trying to make people hate them? Seriously if Giantbomb has a decent forum and community I am out of here.

Good luck Emma!

Good luck Emma in your mid-life crisisness, hope you have fun. I would put more down here but I think everyone else has said what I was going to put.

sorry to hear about this i have also been made redundant it sucks but i will try to land on my feet hope u will soon
Posted Jul 13, 2008 9:07 am PT
Shame that your going you will be missed from the podcast as well as GSUK in general. Well if you're having a midlife crisis it's probably a good idea to dye your hair bright pink and take to drinking brightly coloured cocktails in trendy bars.

Good luck in the future

Sorry to hear about this, Emma. I won't repeat what I said in the thread (hohoho, I rhymed) in UK Discussion (I'll get modded again), but I stand by it.

Good luck with whatever the future brings you.

Sorry to hear about what happened. Good luck Emma, we'll miss you.

Really terrible news, I am sorry. The greatest of luck in whatever the future may bring. In terms of the Midlife Crisis, I suggest getting lots and lots of reading done. Some John Steinbeck or Jack Kerouac would be a good place to start.
Posted Jul 13, 2008 4:17 pm PT
Sorry to hear you're going
Good luck for the future!

I'm only in my early 20s but I'd say a mid-life crisis for a woman is maybe to buy alot of cats or any other kind of pet. I'd probably buy a horse!

Sorry to hear the bad news Emma, good luck on whatever you do next and please keep your fans in touch with your new blog

Hi Emma, I'm a fellow games journalist and I have always been more willing to read a Gamespot article if your name was at the top. I'm sure someone as talented as yourself will land on their feet, but if you really do seek a mid-life crisis I hear Myspace surveys and chocolate mint ice cream are all the rage. See you around!

Emma, since I am new to you, I would like to say that so far, I am a fan!! Since l am obviously older than you, I thought maybe I would share my ( admittedly limited) wisdom with you, in hopes of somehow helping . First of all, I think it is infinitely preferable to be young and unemployed than older and unemployed. I think that in the future, you will be able to look back on your experience here and laugh, or at the very least smile!!! Since I am 37 and male, I guess I am much closer to the ol' supposed midlife crisis than you are, but I can tell you, that I don't think a crisis is as bad as some of the crap life itself can hand you without even breaking a sweat !!!! As for the dog /puppy on a string, I have 2 dogs currently, and I don't intend on ever living without a dog or two in the family !!!! As for the motorbike, I am in fact considering it, even tho I am fairly afraid of driving one, since I have no experience on a motorcycle at all, which didn't prohibit the state of Georgia from giving me a motorcycle license when I moved here, strange as that may seem !!!! As for the teenager thing, I assure you I am not even remotely attracted to teenage girls, even more so since my teenage stepdaughter will make me a grandfather in less than a month !!!!! It is such a weird feeling to be called a grandpa to be when I am yet to be a father!!! (So I think if anyone is due a midlife crisis, I am at least a candidate !) And lastly, I am in no way in need of hair regrowth products. As for the Special Brew, I am all in favor of it !!!!! Good luck, and let me know if I may sprinkle any additional wisdom your way !!!! War Eagle !!!!
