You stupid monkey!

Phew! Times get hard. My wife's still looking for work and now it looks like my job might be in trouble also. It's not a good time to be working for a bank that owns a lot of real estate and according to the papers my bank is on its last legs (note to those who know where I work: I do not have any internal info, just what the papers say). I guess on the bright side there's nothing tying us to Kansas since we rent our apartment and it might be a good opportunity to move to San Fran, if I can find work before I move.

I remember being told by Aaron Thomas:
"The biggest thing I did was move to the San Francisco area. Almost all of the websites/magazines are based out here (I think Game Informer is in Minnesota though), so since this is where the jobs are, it's important to live out here."

Either way, I'm trying to focus on the positive and looking at this as a potential opportunity, who knows, perhaps nothing will happen at all but none the less I've been working hard putting my work on http://www.madelk.co.ukto make sure I'm prepared should things go south.

-=-=-=-=-

Anyway, enough doom 'n' gloom, I figure I'll do something I haven't done in a while: Talk about what I've actually been up to.

Chrono Trigger is still a go-to game for me, I really can't stress how great of an RPG it is, it makes me really wonder why they never thought to release it in the UK.

I've had a very Batman weekend, I've played through Arkham Asylum and retrieved all items from the storyline, then I watched all six Batman movies. I forgot how good the early Batman movies were before they started to get goofy, heck they even have sound effects that sound like they came from a cartoon. As for the game, it's pretty rad, I stunned that I can't find much history about the developers except that one of them did work on Little Big Adventure - which is awesome.

I also played through both Wolfenstein and Shadow Complex during the week. It's quite bananas that Wolfenstein is a $60 game where as Shadow Complex is just $15. Now I'm not saying that Wolfenstein is a terrible game, I'd rate it about average, but an average generic FPS gets beaten down by a well executed Castlevania/Metroid type game any day.

Finally, I think my Wii drive is starting to give up the ghost. It seems that it'll only read disks about every other time, fortunately it only took a couple of minutes to hack the thing and softmod it. Perhaps this will keep the drive alive for longer if the only thing I use it for will be for copying my new games onto a USB hard drive.

Thanks for reading guys and gurls, I've kicked in and started back commenting again, so look for the Elk invading your GameSpot blog soon!

Welcome back. It's been a while since your last blog, so I'll try and make my summary of your blog quick, though to the point.

Most unfortunate about the plausibility of your current job going into the ditch... Hopefully tings don't happen like so and you'll be able to keep your current job, still in pursuit of something in your interests. Chrono Trigger is an amazing game! I've heard great things about Arkham Asylum, though I have yet the chance to play it... I'd really love to... As in the same boat as Batman, I'm also incapable of purchasing Shadow Complex due to the fact most of my friends that I went over to play their 360 are moving away...

I had issues try to play Metroid Prime Trilogy when I popped it into my Wii. I thought I might have recieved a defective copy of the game, but it was suspicious that the game would interrupt just as soon as I started one of the games... I popped in my unused Wii Lens cleaner, followed procedure, and found out that's all my Wii needed... It works perfectly fine now, which actually makes me happy.

Anywho, hope things work wonderfully for you.

Sorry to hear the stresses of keeping your job...I know how you feel in that regard. Batman weekend is sweet. I'm enjoying Arkham Asylum, a lot! Speaking of the classic Batman movies...I find that the Tim Burton original with Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton is still one of my all-time favorites. I watched it a week ago and I still love it.

I never played Chrono Trigger, but I've heard great things about it.

It's a tough time for everyone, hope everything works out ok for you

If it helps you is the same all over the world, my wife just got sacked to, she is a book editor. Apparently people don' reed books anymore ! LoLz

As a dear friend o' mine recently said : "If we don' have money unleast we have fun".

It is banned in the G.B. & Commonwealth because you guyz are prudes ! LoLz

@SomeOddGuy You need to start saving those pennies to take advantage of this 360 price drop!
I've tried a few lens cleaners but sadly no joy. Hopefully it'll hobble along for long enough that I won't need to replace it for a while.

@luc11044 yes totally, I love the first two movies, they were not at all as campy as I thought they were going to be.

@tennis12master I didn't really want to get into a long winded JRPG, epically since I'm really trying to get through Persona 4, but it really is a lot lighter on crazy menus and heavier on gameplay and story.

@Sophia Thanks Sophia! If I have to move elsewhere in the US to find work then that'd just be a small step compared to the giant leap of moving from the UK.
Posted Aug 31, 2009 7:59 am PT
@AOldDog Yeah the situation sucks pretty much all around, but at least there are more jobs available across the US than if I was still in the UK

I actually just watched The Dark Knight on HBO again the other day. The first time I saw it was in IMAX, and I was bowled over. The second watch gave continued support to the incredible supporting actors and the numerous allusions to Arkham.

Yikes, looks like times are definitely hard for you and your wife. I do hope everything works out for you guys, it must be very difficult knowing that your job might be in trouble.

I still need to get myself Chrono Trigger after I save up some money. It looks like a fantastic game and you liking it certainly helps Shadow Complex looks great, I'll definitely purchase it if I ever get myself an Xbox 360 (which I hope I do).

Having a job in trouble must be harsh. But hopefully your fears are unfounded or you can find a even better job.

Chrono Trigger is a great game. How far are you on it?
Posted Aug 31, 2009 9:58 am PT
@carstairs The odd thing about the Dark Knight is that it doesn't feel (at least to me) that it lends itself very well to repeat viewings compared to Begins. Perhaps because a lot of what made Dark Knight so great were the surprises.

@Platyphyllum I picked up Chrono Trigger for about $15 from GameFly, seemed like a bargain as I'm sure I'll sink at least 20 hours into it.
Posted Aug 31, 2009 1:29 pm PT
@siberian142 Fingers crossed! I just reached 12,000. I think that's cryptic enough to not give any spoilers away (to this ancient game)
Posted Aug 31, 2009 1:29 pm PT
Sorry to hear about the job situation... Hope all goes well.

For a job, have you ever thought about starting your own gaming newspaper or magazine? If you move to california it would be a good place to start one. There would be some to compete with but who knows. Maybe you could find work with one of the existing magazines.
Posted Aug 31, 2009 3:46 pm PT
Best luck for you both in the next months (in fact I hope you can get a better job).

If I had a 360 I would definitely try Arkham and Shadow Complex - great looking games. From the older Batman movies the one I like most is Returns - Michelle and the snow look beautiful.

Chrono Trigger is an awesome RPG, but I think it's starting to show its age...

I will starting my masters soon, and I wanted to do it in California because it was evident that everything was happening here, but the education and boarding adn everything seems to be too expensive.. so I finally decided (after weeks of research) that its better to do my masters else where trying Oklahoma, illinois and stuff... also manhattan) wondering if I can get somewhere near manhattan new york and I can then atleast see one gaming convention in my life

maybe if I get a nice job there itself, I will try to come over to sanfran hehe..MUST VISIT GB HQ!!!!!!!!!

@c_rake thanks man, I just try to keep my head down and avoid all the crazy speculation around here.
Posted Sep 2, 2009 9:59 am PT
@kcwsk8 I considered it, but only for 0.6 seconds, but for an android almost a lifetime.

The big problem is that a new startup won't make anywhere near enough money to keep me in new shoes here in KS, let alone CA. I'd have to find a wealthy and flamboyant venture capitalist.

@julianozuca Thanks, I just hope that where ever I work that the job is stable.
Our of all the old Batman movies I think I'd have to agree and say that Returns is my favorite too meow.
The problem with a lot of the newer RPGs is they seem to have become infinitely more complex. I don't mind complexity, but I seem to stumble over the ones that behave more like a championship manager spreadsheet that an RPG.

@Reetesh CA is a great place to visit regardless, being from the UK I do like the larger cities and San Fran has a lot of appeal to me. I guess if you go to Manhattan then you can see the other GB HQ, by which I of course mean GhostBusters!
Posted Sep 2, 2009 10:12 am PT
@elk Haha, yeah, its either the west coast or the east coast I planned Still looking for colleges in Manhattan and New York.. if something good thats acceptable for me, Me take! If only E3 was open to all Maybe i will come during one PAX or just randomly at some holiday, but will visit that place thats for sure! My brother went on a road trip from Illinois to Grand Canyon, so i guess me and he can do a similar trip to San Fran too... lol..(both were fans of Jeff etc when we were kids) ahh.. lets just think of the more important things first.. I guess..

also.. How did you make a move totally from UK to US??? I mean, its usually like people when they are given accomodation and stuff via job they come to US from other countries right? I am guessing there is some great adventure or some special story relating to how and why you came over to that place have you written it anywhere?

Speaking of goofy - I still love the old Adam West/Burt Ward shows - for me, most of those particular villanous performances provided the definitive roles.
Especially Julie Newmar ...
rowr!

Posted Sep 2, 2009 3:26 pm PT
@s_h_a_d_o The old shows are great, but for an entirely different reason. Explosive shark repellent and bat ladders are clearly awesome.

@Reetesh San Fran and New York have been my two favorite cities so far in the USA, I've also hit up Washington, Chicago and Las Vegas and I hope to catch LA and Seattle soon (I gotta see/catch 'em all). I hope to go to PAX one year, perhaps when I live a little closer to all the main events, everything is always on the west side, it seems.

My move from the UK, isn't a secret, but it sure has been one of the most requested blog topics, perhaps I haven't written it yet because I don't feel I could do the story justice. Tell you what, when I get a post written I'll Twitter @ you so you can find it

@elk awesome! Its like.. you are a nomad or something.. or were only some trips and not stays? I'll be waiting for that entry! Quite curious how you are able to visit so many places and its been like what? max 2yrs since you've been in the US.. no?
