I'm not sure how many people still read this blog after 150 posts, and I don't normally ask a lot of those of you who do. But if everyone who reads this post could do me a favor and take a few minutes out of your day to read this post on DoctorFishypants.com, I would really appreciate it. We don't need to start a long discussion about it, but I am curious how many people have ever heard of osteopathic medicine in the United States. I hadn't before I applied to medical school a few years ago.

I say United States, specifically, because osteopathic medicine outside of this country is a completely different entity. Most D.O.s that practice worldwide are trained only in osteopathic manipulative treatment. The scope of their practice does not usually include traditional medicine. (See the comments section of my previous post for more information.)

Anyway, thank you to those who take the time out to read the article or post a comment. I would post it here on GameSpot, but it doesn't really have anything to do with video games. I try to keep most of the posts on this blog at least somewhat related to the industry. And even if no one comments here or on DoctorFishypants, at least I'm getting the word out about osteopathic medicine for anyone who might have the slightest interest in applying to medical school

Pretty cool about the medicine! I read posts but usually don't comment on them. I've picked up a habit of commenting if I can think of anything to say though.

I can't say I have heard of it. At first, I thought I had, simply from shows such as House and Scrubs, but after reading what it actually is, it must have been something else. Interesting read though. It sounds like something great to do, and the reward of helping people in that manner will be fantastic.

After reading that...I believe my family doctor may be a D.O...I'll have to look at his degrees or ask the next time I see him...

Just from the word itself, I would assume the term essentially means 'bone doctor', but in my head, osteopathy and homeopathy are jumbled and I get the terms confused. I know you're not getting your homeopathic medical degree, though

ps - Rocket Riot is a blast.

BTW, If anyone reading this has their own off-site blog, please let me know. I'd be interested in following it. @yeah_write I didn't know you had another blog. I'll add it to my RSS feeds. Thanks!

@spazzx625 Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine that treats people with heavily diluted preparations of agents that, in normal amounts, would cause disease symptoms. I don't really understand it myself. That's just the answer I had to memorize for a test

Osteopathic medicine used to be called osteopathy when it was first founded and didn't include traditional allopathic medicine. It's all very needlessly confusing. The only time I would ever really using the manipulative treatments in practice is if a patient came in and happened to be complaining of back or neck pain or sore muscles.

I haven't played Rocket Riot for a few days. I think I just needed a break after finishing endurance mode. That thing took me an entire day. Still an awesome game though. I also picked up the Namco Museum disc for $8, even though the only game I'm apparently missing is Galaga Legions. So we can try out Mr. Driller if you want.

Read it and left a comment on the blog. I would be really interested to know specific examples of how treatment with DOs differs from other doctors!

@SkylinePigeon I would too! I'll let you know when I get that far. Right now I'm just memorizing millions of diseases

@DrFish62 - @spazzx625 - just a heads up for anyone interested - the scope and science of homeopathy is far larger, and decidedly more esoteric, than the desciption above, which could easily be applied to the "mainstream" concept of vaccination.

@s_h_a_d_o That's a fair point. I didn't mean to disparage homeopathy. I just don't know enough about it to form an informed opinion.

I went to college in Kirksville, MO, which is also home to a medical school which turns out D.O.s, but prior to that, I had rarely heard of them.

@gmsnpr That's THE med school that churns out D.O.s. It's the one that Still founded.

Hi Brian. I actually have an appointment with an Oesteopath in two weeks. Of course I am in Canada, but they are the same here as in the States.
