Strange things are happening...no, wait...let me correct myself: scary things are happening in my building...to be more precise horrifying things are happening.

Let me explain myself…

Last Thursday I had to work late; I got home at around 10.30pm and while coming near the building where I live, I noticed something wasn't right.

We have a small entrance hall in which our post-boxes are situated; there are two glass doors; one door gives out on a little plaza, the other one leads to the stairs and the lift…and all the flats. In the entrance hall there's also a large mirror on the wall.

As I approached the building I noticed that a huge part of the outer door was scattered to pieces. When I entered the hall there was graffiti on the mirror (messages in French). Didn't really know what to think about it…the next morning when leaving the building to go to work again, the scattered glass was replaced by a piece of wood; the mirror was clean again, so I thought it was just a not so pleasant encounter with vandalism.

Friday evening I was watching some telly, until all of a sudden a strange smell entered my nostrils…something was burning. I heard a lot of fuzz in the hallway and my neighbours decided to go take a look….

A molotov-cocktail had been thrown into our entrance hall; the rest of the door was yet again scattered to pieces and now there was graffiti on the mirror and on the wall. Fire fighters came by to extinct the fire, the police came by to take notice, but no-one seems to know why all this is happening and who is responsible.

The whole entrance hall is now covered in white dust form the fire- extinguisher (as are the letters that were still in my post-box); the graffiti on the mirror has yet again been removed, but the graffiti on the wall is still there…we don't have a real front-door any longer and although you can't really do much about it all, it makes you wonder…I live on the 6th floor: there's only one route to leave the building…and that's by using the front door…so whenever there's a real fire in the entrance hall, we'll all be trapped inside the building…also I didn't hear any kind of fire-alarm going off. I never even thought about putting the phone number of the emergency services in my mobile phone…but now I did.

Earlier today I saw one of the neighbours in the lift: the police thinks it's an act of revenge on someone who lives in the building…but they're not sure. I guess it's just a way of saying that they don't have a bloody idea. Hope all this will be over soon…

That is quite disturbing! Could you tell what the graffiti said? It seems to me a building of that size would have emergency exits. And if this is some sort of revenge, it is being done by dangerous, reckless cowards! Let us know how you're doing.

Scary stuff. I hope that it does get resolved soon & the person is caught. How can that building be legal without any emergency exits? Please, do take care & keep us posted on this.

This sounds all too familiar to me. About two years ago, I was coming home on a friday night around 3 am. I came home to see my whole street smoking with the police everywhere. Turned out someone had set two hand granates under the window of the room where my parents where sleeping at the time. No one was hurt, but after a year and a half the police were still playing dumb so we moved to Belgium.

a small update: the police still doesn't know who's responsible for the vandalism: it seems that other buildings as well have received a special treatment: the last couple of days nothing really happened though...and there's a positive effect as well: all the inhabitants now take their time to talk with each other (used to be just a quick "hi" and "bye"). In two days i'll be off to Ireland, so I hope I'll still have a home to return to (so melo-dramatic ). take care and you may expect a new blog in two weeks
