Something I have been wondering a lot over the past year is why Marijuana is still illegal in the United Stataes. A few days ago, 14 time oylimpic champion Michael Phelps was photographed using a bong, which is used to smoke marijuana. My question is this. What's the big deal?
Obviously marijuana is not healthy. But it's not as unhealthy as tobacco or alcohol. In fact, cigarrettes and beer are worse for you body than marijuana is. It's also less addicting than tobacco and alcohal. Researches have yet to link it to lung cancer.
In this chart, marijuana is listed by it's genus, which is Cannabis. As shown here, it and many other illegal drugs, such as LSD and ecstasy, are less harmful than both alcohal and tobacco. So is there really any reason why they should be illegal? I don't see why not.
By legalizing some of these drugs, especially marijuana, it would have economic benefits. If the government makes them legal, it can tax the crap out of them. This would produce a large profit for the government. In addition, people wouldn't be tried in the court system and sent to jail for using these drugs. It costs a lot of money to prosecute people and to keep them alive in prison. Prisons all over the U.S. are overcrowding. This would lift a large burden off the justice system and would save a lot of money.
Obviously there are other issues to legalizing certain drugs. Some drugs, even ones that are less unhealthy than tobacco and alcohal, have temperary psychological effects and as such, can cause some public safety problems, like with driving. This is something to consider. But alcohal can also present public safety issues. As such, if certain drugs are to become legalized, the possible public safety concerns any individual drug may cause should be carefully assessed.
It should be noted that I don't think every drug should be legalized. Drugs like heroin should remain controlled. While pot may not be that bad, others are bad enough to the point where the government does need to step in to protect its citizens.
