From an ergonomic standpoint the Wii controller (and TV remotes as well) is very poorly designed and is more restrictive than both the PS or 360 controller. If you are in a seated position pointing the Wii controller at the screen your elbow must remain relatively extended and the shoulder flexed to varying degrees while your wrist is stretched to the limit in extreme ulnar deviation. Normal use of a remote in this fashion will probably not cause too many problems, however when it is used for video games there are numerous stress points on the body from being in this position for extended periods of time. If the shoulder remains in flexion with the elbow extended, there is much more torque on the shoulder as the center of mass of the arm is much farther than the center of mass of the body. To maintain this position places more demands on the shoulder muscles to fight against gravity leading to fatigue and eventually compensatory shoudler hiking which will utilize the upper trap and levator scapula muscles to assist with maintaining the shoulder's position which could lead to mid back and neck pain as those muscles become over stressed. Additionally the wrist is being stretched into ulnar deviation for extended periods of time possibly compressing branches of the ulnar nerve or even overstretching the radial nerve. Carpal tunnel syndrome is also a very realistic possibility from maintained position of the wrist out of its neutral position. If you attempt to decrease shoulder flexion and increase elbow extension to bring the center of mass of the arm closer to the body and you remain seated, you increase the need to further ulnar deviate at the wrist to maintain the sensor of the controller pointing at the TV.

To avoid many of these problems I would recommend playing the Wii from a standing position and limit playing times. Stretching the forearm muscles is also a good idea to prevent injury. The PS3 and XBOX 360 controllers are better designed for gameplay from the sitting position if they aren't being used for any type of motion sensing function. Despite the fact that those two controllers were designed with ergonomics in mind, each person has varying hand sizes and those who have large hands may benefit from oversize grips to better fit the size of their hands.  I don't know whether or not there are third party attachments that can serve that purpose though and unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it if your hands are too small either.

Personally I have not had any of these symptoms, however I have treated many clients with complaints of "gamer's thumb" or "blackberry thumb" which is essentially inflammation of the tendons of the thumb related to playing video games or doing a lot of text messaging.  Aside from stretching and standing it will probably be a good idea to apply ice for symptomatic relief to reduce the inflammation and take a break from gaming.  As a hardcore gamer myself I can understand why I see very little compliance with that last suggestion until things get really bad.

Just got back from the Honolulu Sony Expo and have mixed feelings about the PS3.  Got to play both Motor Storm and Resistance.  I must say that I was impressed with the framerates and how fluid all of the action was especially in RFOM despite all of the chaos that was going on.  Absolutely no chugging and running flawlessly at 780p.  Although there will invariably be comparisons made to Halo, the level design for RFOM sets itself apart from MS's flagship franchise.  As far as an actual war setting, RFOM was much more realistic in its atmosphere.  There was so much going on all around me and I really had no idea where to go.  This is in sharp contrast to the linear paths provided in Halo where you are moving through scripted events from point A to point B.  The level was so enormous that I had no idea even where point A was and was scurrying around looking for cover from the neverending onslaught of enemies.

Unfortunately one thing that did take away from the immersive war experience: the lack of rumble.  It really is one of those things that you don't miss until it is gone.  Not being able to feel the automatic fire or the shocks of a nearby exploding artillery shell was definitely noticable.  Motor Storm would have been a perfect candidate for that feature since it involves off road racing.  It felt more like skating without the force feedback.  I also felt the controller was a lot lighter than any other controller than I can remember.  I am still trying to figure out if this is good or bad...at this point it just feels kind of strange.

If there is anyone affiliated with Sony I have a few suggestions to improve future showings:  If you are going to hold an expo and showcase the most anticipated next gen system, please have some intelligent people running the kiosks.  I was told that the release date for Motor storm was moved up to be a launch title and then after getting my hopes up, another Sony rep disputed this claim.  They also insisted that both games at release would not have any SIXAXIS features when I asked if there would be any more functionality built into the game than what I already knew (the demos did not allow for any SIXAXIS functionality).  I tried to get confirmation on whether or not Motor Storm would be 1080p resolution but they waffled and one rep attempted to claim that it was running at 1080p on the floor despite the fact that the PS3 load screen clearly stated that the demo's set output resolution was 780p.  Incidentally, in the two hours that I was there one of the units had to be reset twice because of the game freezing.  I questioned one of the reps as to the cause and he reluctantly replied that "It is probably because of overheating in there...happens every so often and we just reset it."  I hope that these overheating issues will be isolated to conditions where the PS3 is in an enclosed box like at the kiosk.  I had many other questions for the staff which I never really received answers to.  Amusingly one rep quipped, "To be honest, most of us are just here to make sure that everyone gets a turn to play..."

My overall feeling after leaving is optimistic, though.  The bottom line is that people will play the PS3 for the games.  Both played like solid titles even in their meager demo forms.  The particle effects and other graphical enhancements were spectacular.  The controller was light but a familiar layout felt quite comfortable in my hands.  The small changes were welcome and I actually like the new analog R2 and L2 buttons better than the 360's triggers.  Sign me up for a launch unit come Nov. 17th

Some people just don't have opinions. Like DarthUnchi.
DarthUnchi must really love MovieTome and agree with every review we've ever written! What other reason could DarthUnchi possibly have for not rating a single film?
