I really felt in the mood for Silent Hill 2 today, so I popped it in my PS3 for a quick spin. To my surprise, though, a message came up telling me that my machine was not compatable with PS2 software!

Is this fixable? I thought there was limited backwards compatability on EU models, but this message suggests that there may be no compatability at all!

On a plus note though, I've finally been able to get hold of a copy of Silent Hill Origins for the PS2 today! The collection is complete!

Unless you have an older model PS3 (ie. made before 2008 ), there is no BC for PS2 games. My 80GB PS3 only plays some PS2 games and I got it in 2007.

Sony took out BC capability to reduce production costs.

My PS3 was the original model and plays PS2 games, but I'm pretty sure I heard that the models the UK got had the "Emotion Engine" stripped out to save costs.

the original 20gb and 60gb versions achieved BC through it's hardware (it has an Emotion Chip like the ps2. Then they released the 40gb and 80gb versions. The 40gb has no BC for ps2 games while the 80gb achieved BC through software emulation. Now neither the 40gb or 80gb have any PS2 BC.

The only good news is that all PS3's play PS1 games.
