I have been an avid 'mobile gamer' since buying a Gameboy*ahem*... years ago and between now and then, have owned many mobile gaming devices. In fact to date I am on my 4th PSP and 3rd DS (well the new one is a DSi so maybe that counts as a seperate unit from the original DS's) and I have just recently been introduced to the wonders of the iPhone.
Is it just me or do others find that apart from a few great games, most games designed for the mobile market are just rubbish? Whether it is bad control methods, dodgy graphics, awful story, bugs and glitches or other problems, mobile gaming just has not come on as much as other areas of the gaming industry.
So how shocked was I on finally getting round to searching the iPhone app store for some games to play whilst on holiday a month or so back! For a device that is meant to be primarily a phone, this is one cool mobile gaming platform. There I was, playing Uno and Monopoly, Puzzle Quest, Peggle and Scrabble. I then loaded up Tiger Woods, Need for Speed , Championship Manager and Prison Tycoon and now am finding any excuse to get out of work and go play, wherever I am.
Of course the iPhone is not without it's problems. There are a lot of memory issues with apps at the moment plus storage space restaints and the developers are still trying to refine the best way to control a game with nothing but a touchscreen and motion control available to them. But I think that this is the future, devices that can do everything and do everything well.
What other device is small enough to put in my pocket, allows me to make phone calls, surf the Internet, play games, send and receive messages and guide me home with satnav? The appstore is a stroke of genius, putting thousands of applications directly in the palm of millions of users!
And the point of this blogis today...... Well after dipping my toe into the iPhone appstore I was impressed. No,more than impressed, this stuff rocks and is changing the way we play and buy games forever!
