GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

This line from Worf in "Star Trek: First Contact" is one of the film's better moments. I was thinking about that scene yesterday as I read Glenn's courageous post about the blackout he's organizing in response to the changes here at tv.com. I fully support his cause and will comply and urge you to do so as well. Next Tuesday, September 30th, I will not be logging in on tv.com or even MovieTome, even tho Tuesdays are the day I post my NFL Pick 'em Awards. They will not come out next week til Wednesday.

I am legally blind. I have difficulty reading certain web pages (including the new format) and even tho I have the capacity to enlarge the text it is not always that easy.

But this isn't my main complaint regarding the changes. I would be selfish to expect the powers that be to design their site solely to meet my individual needs. My concerns go much deeper.

The wonder and majesty of tv.com, the attraction for me and I suspect most of us is in the capacity to express our own individual s.t.y.l.e. and creativity through the various features. The first thing to catch my eye on any of my friends' blogs is their banner. Next is the blog itself, the text, the font, color, size are all ways we have to stand out and be recognized for that identity we project through our pages. The banner is there (I have deleted mine) but it is now dwarfed by the mind-numbing white space around it.

What I see so far is that we are all being made to be little more than Borg drones, conforming to a single format of listless unimaginative space, void of color, life and breath.

When Glenn said "Enough!" the Borg Queen and her cohorts responded quickly and decisively with a TOS violation. I can hear them hissing now, "Resistance is futile."

Time will tell if Glenn's (and now mine) crusade will bear fruit or not. That is out of my control. What is within my control is whether or not to log in next Tuesday, September 30th, and thereby sending a necessary message.

And now, it is up to you as well.

I read that post as well earlier today after a friend of mine blogged about it. They issued a TOS violation for that? What did he violate? Speaking out against this horrendous new design that CBS has pushed upon us? That is wrong. BTW, Tommy, you should stop by the Redseign Forum and bring up your issue with not being able to see the small text.

I'm reposting Glenn's genius blog (as far as I'm concerned) on Sunday so it doesn't fall into oblivion, I've thought of you when it started yesterday knowing you would really be on board.

I shouldn't have to point out the obvious but maybe I should. Thanks France, Bobby.

Hey Cubby. Im making my comeback to the site but il fully comply with Glenns requested boycott. The changes are wierd and like you said, it seems like we are being made to conform. Later .

I'm totally with you, Tommy. I have terrible vision and am prone to migraines. This new layout isn't helping but I agree, it goes beyond my and your needs. I think the worse part is the change is so dramatic. It's so far from where it once was and I can't see how any of these changes have improved anything. I won't log on Sept 30th. Oh and I love the Borg reference.

I'm sorry the new format is causing you so much trouble.

The problem with a massive redesign is that it changes lots of things for lots of people. For me, I dislike the changes to the program guides, and the blogs are not nearly as important. But I do feel bad for members who use the site more expressively than I have any desire to. I also understand any issues people have with reading the site (though I have a feeling alternate skins will be available). One thing to remember is that the last update to the submission system alone took over 8 months to finally make work.

I will skip the site for the day, sure, though even 1,000 other members complying may not influence CBS/CNET. Management (far above the TV.com level) may want to make the site into something entirely different (an entertainment and streaming media destination that draws in 200,000 page views a day). At least in the US, we ALL have the same profile banner now (for Sept. 24, it's "Gary: Unmarried", Wed. CBS).

The thing is, the changes affect me in a totally different way, I lose what I liked, the simple and straightforward access to specific historical TV program data.

I agree, the redesign destroys whatever personality a person puts into their profile. I'll definitely participate in the boycott! I really like your MovieTome banner, by the way.

BRAVO! Although I've come across more than one person who are convinced that this won't accomplish anything, they are in a definite minority. I will support the boycott and I'll trumpet it off of every pedestal I can find. We have put way too much work and effort and FREE (i.e. UNPAID) time into this site to make it a first-rate television information resource.

Hi Tommy,
I feel terrible that the new design has really taken away from your enjoyment of the site because of your vision problems. I hope you can stick around.
Well, my sister is an optometrist so perhaps she can help? Hah.
Zack is back tonight!!!

I did a little blog about the boycott last night. I'm in! There's something that many people don't understand about protest. It's not a failure if it doesn't produce change! The tragedy is when people stop speaking out about things that are important to them. Then we've succumbed to apathy, and lost a dimension of the human spirit.

Brilliant blog Tommy, and I LOVE the reference. Assimilate This! indeed. To all who have asked what we hope to accomplish, I have posted a new blog to explain exactly that. Please read it. Its long, but it explains things. I have already heard from a number of staff and volunteers here that they actually believe that this is the only thing that is likely to get attention, since they are routinely being told by management that "its not that big a deal" and/or "it will quickly blow over". We are not looking to roll out the old format, that will never happen. We do want immediate changes to the existing format (including getting rid of the blinding white background). We want to send a message as to just how many of us feel disenfranchised by the way in which they rolled out this new change with so little actual input from us, the real users and LIFE of tv.com. What we want is some actual attention to our valid issues and not merely lip service. And most importantly, we want to send a message that before you do something like this in the future again, find out what we (the actual users) want. Not some focus group, not some design team and not some execs who never log onto the site and actually use it! Involve the people who usage of the site makes YOU money! Hundreds of thousands of hours of unpaid labor have gone into making this the most comprehensive website of television on the web. Its life-blood is its users and we deserve much more respect than your (CBS) actions gave us. That's why we're mad, that's why we protest, that's why we won't be here on Sept. 30!!! Thank you for spreading the word!!

My friend, I will be participating this Tuesday. You can count on me to stay away from TV.com on that day. BTW, this is an excellent blog!!
Posted Sep 24, 2008 3:28 pm PT
With you, Glenn, TJ, Hoeech, France and many many others all the way...

wacha yall doin???
Posted Sep 24, 2008 4:43 pm PT
I'm fully behind the blackout day.
Posted Sep 24, 2008 4:45 pm PT
I'm with Glenn!

I will definitely be staying away on Tuesday. Interesting insight into the blog and profile situation; I hadn't quite thought about it like that, but it's very true indeed

I get why people are mad, why people don't like the new format but I don't come here to make my page pretty. That sounds kind of mean but I come here to talk about tv and to the great people that come here. Banners, icons and things of that sort are irrelevant. If I wanted that I'd be at myspace. But as I said I get why some people are mad and I myself don't like the white backroud but I'm cool with the site the way it is and the way it.

I have put the new avi that tjaman has made to call attention to our participation up now. If you are interested, you should do the same. This will increase the chatter about Sept. 30 Blackout Day and maybe increase the number of people participating. Just a suggestion, the avi can be found at: http://i528.photobucket.com/albums/dd330/tjaman/tvdark.jpg

Enough is enough. We need to really stand up. Regardless of what may come, we have voices too.
Posted Sep 25, 2008 12:52 pm PT
Interesting blog. I just wonder if we have multiphasic shielding? (You know, against the Borg?)
Posted Sep 25, 2008 5:22 pm PT
Tommy great banner, thanks for all the tremendous support!
Posted Sep 25, 2008 10:13 pm PT
Definitely joining the blackout crusade, regardless of what changes and what doesn't.
Posted Sep 26, 2008 8:26 am PT
I just keep popping back here from time to time, whenever I need encouragement that organizing this is worth it. Its a great "pep talk" thanks again Tommy for making it!!!!
