Well - FInally. After looking for over 6 months, I scored this little rarity. Games that are 7 or more years old are getting really hard to find [ I do not do eBay or the like ]. Basically I have about 3 stores I hit up every week and scan all the used games. Yesterday I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Suikoden III at EB Games - for $5.00 ! What a bonus - it had original case and manual as well.

Anyways - I have read about the game for years and was really happy to have found it at last. So now to the point of this blog - my first impressions.

What can I say - I like the stylistic elements - nice graphics. That was what struck me first - it LOOKS good. But bizarre that there is no voice work and often there is no music either. Minor quibbles, probably. Interesting too that battle commands are given by pair of party members rather than singly for each member. Overall I think it will be a fun adventure but considering it came out in 2002, it really is old-school in overall design and presentation. Also I found it a bit confusing [ after an hour of playing ] to know just what I was supposed to be up to rather than just randomly wandering around in the forest and exploring that castle. I guess I just need to give it time and allow myself to be immersed in it.

How about anyone else - what did you think of the game?

Sadly, I've never played any of the Suikoden games but I've heard that they're all pretty good. Of course for $5, you can't beat that!

Well... I loved Suikoden III and V (IV is a HORRIBLE game). That said, given the time period there should have been voice. Trust me though, by the halfway point you'll have a voice in your head for each of your 108 stars. There is a depth of exploration in SIII you don't find in many games of that time. I cannot WAIT for a next gen Suikoden.

OK - I now have the PROPER name for this game - Suk-u-in III - as I have been totally sucked into it after a few more hours of play. The idea of playing through from the perspective of 3 different protagonists and their parties to advance a parallel storyline is very cool. I still feel like an idiot as far as the game world is concerned, but to play it is to love it and I will continue to play and learn as I go.
What a great game. For classic RPGs, PS2 rulez.
