So last night was The Champions League Quarter Finals, between Chelsea and Liverpool. So ? That's been happening for the last 8 years in a row.But no,this match was special.Liverpool needed to either win by 3 goals,or score 3 and concede 1 to take the tie into extra time.Pretty difficult to do(both)when you are playing at Stamford Bridge, and without the services of Steven Gerrard.
The match,as expected, started off fiery.Liverpool had the ball, and Chelsea was nervous. The break-through came at the 19-th minute.Fabio Aurelio was lining a free-kick about 27-29 yards from goal. With Gerrard on the side-lines,it was up to him to deliver the perfect ball to his team-mates.Cech was seeing to it that the ball doesn't reach his team-mates.It didn't.Aurelio took it directly, and with a brilliant out-side curler, send it flying past Cech.He was embarrassed.0-1.
Soon, about ten minutes later,Alonso was pulled inside the area,to which the referee awarded Liverpool a penalty.Alonso had this one in his sights. My heart was beating hard, and fast. What if he missed ? What if Liverpool don't get a second chance ? No way.Cech went the wrong way.0-2.Half time, and Liverpool needed just another goal to win this tie.
I don't know what happened in the locker-room,but whatever happened fired up Chelsea. They weren't going down without a fight ! Drogba scored one(thanks to Reina's generosity),and Lampard got another to seal the match in Chelsea's favour.2-2. 30 minutes remained. On aggregate,Chelsea had a lead of 5-3.Liverpool fought back hard, and fast. The match in progress was turning out quite the extraordinary.Alex scored from a brilliantly taken free-kick to make it 3-2.Certainly Liverpool were out.But Kuyt got a header on target, and Lucas scored from a deflected shot off Essien.3-4 ! What a match ! Liverpool actually needed another goal to win the tie on away-goals rule ! Lampard again made sure that didn't happen. The final two minutes of regulation time, and the England man made it 4-4 on the night, and 7-5 on aggregate,as Gerrard watched on from the club-house.
As the whistle blew,I felt a needle being driven through my heart.Liverpool were out of Europe.Only the League remained, which would be difficult to win in the present circumstances.Chelsea,on the other hand, now face Barcelona in the Semis, which will be a terrific match. But this one was special, even by these two powerhouse's standards !Both these teams will remember this match, being one in which neither side gave up.But Chelsea were the better team,I admit. But,let's keep our hopes high, and wish that may another year not pass by without winning a single silver-wear.
P.S-School's reopened.Tough times.Tougher ahead for both me,and the Reds in the League,as the season reaches it's climax !So,let's do something to keep our spirits high :
