Today is a sad, sad day. The most entertaining and hilarious MMO I have ever come across, Dungeon Runners, has officially been canceled by NCSoft.
You bastards!
The official announcement promises that anyone who is a paying member as of today, September 16th, will receive free digital copies of "City of Heroes: Architect Edition" and of "Guild Wars Prophecies", as well as a 30-day game time serial code. In addition to that, anyone who purchased a multi-month membership that extends beyond New Years will receive a full refund of the left-over part. And they are going out in style. Increased mythic drops, quintupled exp rates, and lots of other good stuff.
They may be bastards, but at least they aren't cheap bastards.
But still... Dungeon Runners has been canceled. I am sad. I am also not playing it tonight, or for the next week, at least. No way I'm going on the members-only server until the initial rage has simmered down!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I will have a quiet drink in honor of my favorite MMO and the greatest posse in Townston, the Mad Cap Warriors. May Gosh bless us all, and may Geebus never be forgotten.

| We've been trying to figure out how to fix things for some time now. And, that's where things get sticky. We've got some ideas that could work. But, they're expensive to implement and pretty risky. Those two facts, coupled with the recent loss of some key developers, make achieving the success we seek pretty much out of the question. As things stand now, we're a three man team. Yeah, we lost two of our five man team recently. Not nearly enough manpower to get where we need to be. Rebuilding the team isn't really an option for various reasons. So, where does that leave us? Can you guess? Yes, that's right, we're going to be shutting Dungeon Runners down at the end of 2009. New Year's Eve to be exact. |

I made a blog about the horribleness of the free trial of GW Prophecies not long ago... but if I get the game for free, that changes everything
If I decide to play it I'll definitely let you know. Right now, I am having my drink in honor of DR. The developers did an amazing job, and the game forums are, for obvious reasons, exploding with conflicted threads. On one hand we are very sad and bitter to lose the game, and on the other, we want the developers to know how much we appreciated the fun while it lasted. It's a weird atmosphere.

Well, you know, "You either die a hero, or live to see yourself become the villain."
It sounds like they decided to have it die a hero.
All that compensation they're coming up with sounds great, and it seems that they ran the game well. I respect that.

@TeabagChampion
I try to focus on the silver lining. I'm getting two free games out of this.
@itsTolkien_time
That's a good way of putting it. They are at least going out with style.
And I am taking it a lot better than several other DR players. I swear, the way some people have reacted you'd think this game was the only thing that mattered in their lives. Sad.... and very pathetic. Don't get me wrong, I love the game and I will miss it, but these people apparently can't imagine life without it.

I've never been into MMO's (or online games at all really) but Dungeon Runners probably would have been the one I turned to if I did, it looked pretty funny. The trailer alone was hilarious.

I'm sorry for you, but I cannot stand MMO's of any kind. So... sorry ChiiDragon, but... DEATH TO THE MMO!! Death I say! Fetch the torches, and pitch, there's work to be about while others yet live. Strap 'em to a pole hangin' o'r the briny deep, and light em ablaze! ARRR. (yeah, that was pirate for you Chili).

That's one of the many reasons I don't like MMOs. They have a finite shelf life. As a collector, that bothers me. I've actually been meaning to write a blog about the longevity of current gen "classic" games vs. older game for awhile now...

I never played it. Then again, I don't really keep track of the MMO genre. The last MMORPG I played was Guild Wars, and that was way back around the time that the first expansion, Factions, came out. It is always sad when a developer drops support for a game, especially an online game because that means that you can never play it again once the servers shut down.
Speaking of NCsoft, heard how they are getting sued by patent trolls AGAIN? Some company named Paltalk or something, who recently sued Microsoft because of something to do with Xbox Live's data system...They are bringing up lawsuits against Sony (For PSN), NCsoft, Activision Blizzard, and several other MMO developers. They are filing the suit in a region of Texas that is very xenophobic and notoriously bias against non-American companies, so even though these patent trolls have no actual case they will STILL probably win just because they are an American company suing a Korean company...Frankly, these cases show everything that is wrong and screwed up with the US Patent system, and proves that it needs a complete overhaul. Currently, the "patent trolls" can just patent an extremely generic, vague idea, wait a few years, and then sue a highly successful company that has a vaguely similar product AND WIN. It is ridiculous.

@bacchus2
Dungeon Runners was basically the way Diablo would have been if Monty Python had developed it.
@Frame_Dragger
Men! Keelhaul the blasphemer!
@Bozanimal
NO!! I will NEVER join you!
@Teenaged
I haven't either, but I plan to play it a lot before it goes away. They have added a bunch of great extras for the fare-well party.
@johnsteed7
This one has been going on for ten years now... and I believe Ultima Online is still alive and well as well. I think it's like any other genre. Not all of them stick around, but inevitably some of them do.
@raven28256
I pretty much agree with everything you just said there. And I am sort of looking forward to when someone tries to take on Acti-Blizzard in this fashion... they are head-quartered in California, so can force the case to be moved there, and they have lots of money.

Hahaha oooh right, the horrible demo thing. Even I think that's a bit on the dim-witted side of them, but I still stand by my saying that GW is one of the best games available to play online today. I would rank it second only to WoW, but it's a totally different style of play.

I've never been a fan of MMO's, I suppose something to do with my aversion to people, but I do know several people that love them. I'm sorry that something you enjoy is being shut down. I hope that you come across something almost as good at least to fill the void.

@xboxrulze
When I get my copy, I'll let you know. And OrcHammer. After all, you need someone to send all that extra gear in your bank accounts to
@kellymae
I was sad at first, and I will be very sad again on January 1, but right now, I am focusing on enjoying it as much as I can. Like Greenday said, it was the time of our life

Was it you debating Guildwars? If it was, now you don't have a reason to not try it haha. Let me know if you want to play, I still have all the games as well.
Godspeed, Dungeon Runners, Godspeed.
