I don't mean to say arcade design is dumbed-down but it is stripped-down. I like to think of it as the gaming equivalent of minimalism or punk rock (generally known for simplicity but also effectiveness).
The complex strategies that come from moving unique pieces spatially on a board in chess are reduced to one basic mechanic for checkers.
