Title - Up
Director - Pete Docter
Genre - Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family
Release Date - May 29th, 2009 (Canada)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Up is guaranteed to fill your heart with enough emotion to make you want to watch this film over and over again, making it the best Pixar has done yet. And here's why.
Elderly male Carl Fredricksen has been living in his home for decades. He used to be the kind man who always loved his wife, Ellie. Carl and Ellie knew each other since childhood, coming upon each other when they found out they both like Charles Muntz, the famous explorer. They add an inspirational dream of reaching Paradise Falls in South America. Although they never did. And now, because of Ellie's tragic death, Carl began to become grumpy, and private.
Carl lived where no man wanted to. He lived right in the middle of a busy construction site. You'd think someone would want to move to a peaceful neighbourhood, but Carl stayed behind. He never wanted to leave his beloved home he held with his wife. He began to call it Ellie. Later, Carl ran into a little incident with one of the workers of the construction site. By accident, Carl smacked this worker straight on his head, causing him to bleed. The people near by witnessed the attack. Carl felt shocked that something like this happened, and he ran straight back home. He was sentenced to court, and being the elderly man he is, he had to be moved into a retirement home.

Just when he was about to leave, he ties hundreds and hundreds of balloons to his house, thus making him launch in the air. He always dreamed of going to Paradise Falls, and now, he was going there.
All went well on his journey, until he heard a knock on his door. It would be impossible for someone to knock on a door, that's high in the air. Carl came to look, and he stumbled upon young lad Russel. Russel always wanted to be the famous explorer like Charles Muntz, or the like. Carl had to let him inside the house, knowing that if he told him to leave...Russel wouldn't be able to.
I have to say, this movie looks beautiful. The visuals are the best I've ever seen in an animation film, besides Wall-E. Also, the beginning montage of Carl and Ellie was simply amazing. It's sad to know that they led such a happy life, but tragically, Ellie died. And Carl wasn't being himself. The beginning montage explained alot about the story, making this movie very mature, and not just for the kids. There is alot of sad and touching moments I can point out.

Besides the movie being sad and all, it is very funny too. I just love Carl's and Russel's chemistry together. I should also point out the dogs in this, they are pretty hilarious, mostly Doug.
Not one part of this very enjoyable film bored me in the slightest bit. My favourite character is easily Carl, because he is just awesome. He reminds me of a animated Clint Eastwood, I must say. I'm happy Pixar thought up of a film where there is a grumpy old man involved in this scenario, really creative.
Voice acting was top-notch to. Carl's and Russel's voice really fit the movie. Then again, Pixar always had great voice acting.

With that being said, Up is just another amazing title to be added to Pixar's library. In my opinion, this is the best Pixar has ever done yet. Although it is a tough competition with Up and Wall-E.
One of the best films of the year, if not, the best. You HAVE to give this movie a chance. You may think this movie is childish and all, but you'll regret saying that after you watch this terrific film.

Title - Moon
Director - Duncan Jones
Genre - Drama | Mystery | Sci-Fi | Thriller
Release Date - July 17th, 2009 (UK)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Moon was released on July 17th, in the UK, but not released to alot of cinemas. So this little gem may be a bit hard to find. Moon stars well known actor Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell and Kevin Spacey as Gerty, the robot. This movie starts off as Sam Bell is still living on the Moon for about 3 years now. He does his daily work, and just to think that 2 weeks later, he will be going back home.
Until he realizes he's not alone. Sam runs into an accident on Hellum-3. Thus waking up, he kept asking questions to Gerty, but Gerty refused to answer. After a few days of rest, Sam thought he should go back to working. He goes back to where he crashed, then to see another life form on the Moon. Immediately, he brings this life form back inside, just to find out this person looks JUST like him. That's probably all I can tell you, saying more would just give away the experience.
The whole atmosphere of Moon is magnificent. The visuals look pretty crisp, I wouldn't say it has the best CGI you can find these days. But, they do look great.

The story in Moon starts slow, but builds up later. Over the past years I've seen films, not many can relate to this one. The all around story in this movie is very intriguing. Like before, saying anything more would just spoil the awesome experience you would have with Moon.
This movie is not your ordinary action film, nor your occasional science-fiction film. It's a film where everybody should see, or just to give it a chance.
There may be some parts of the film I found somewhat boring, but later on, the movie really really picked up. Knowing that Sam wasen't the only life form, and KNOWING that there is a life form that looks exactly like him, is scary.

Moon will have to spark your interest just that little bit to make you watch it. With a very deep story, an amazing atmosphere and great visuals, this is a movie you cannot miss.
I must also mention the music in this movie. The whole theme you hear everytime in this film is...epic. That piece of music makes the whole experience of Moon even better, which just adds to the great movie it is.
That is all I will say. If you haven't seen it, give it a chance.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Good -
- Very, very deep story
- Atmosphere is amazing
- Visuals look great, but not the best
- Great soundtrack
The Bad -
- Movie is a bit shorter then you think
- Some pointless parts that could have been edited, or removed
Overall -
9/10

Title - Public Enemies
Director - Michael Mann
Genre - Crime | Drama | Thriller | Suspense
Release Date - July 1st, 2009
----------------------------------------------------------
Michael Mann is back with an all new crime film. You may be familiar with "Heat", "Collateral" or "Thief". The story in Public Enemies wraps around the gangster outlaw John Dillinger as some call him Public Enemy #1. Public Enemies stars Christan Bale as the G-man Melvin Purvis and Marian Collitard as John Dillingers lover Billie Frechette.
Public Enemies sets in 1933-34 in USA where John Dillinger is still robbing banks with the help of his friends. While the police and FBI are still trying to chase Dillinger and hunt them down, they know John will always be one step ahead of him. Breaking out of prison many times, John Dillinger knows his way around the cops. Soon after the FBI is running out of ideas, is where Melvin Purvis has the lead on the case.
The story in Public Enemies isn't rather new, in my opinion. If you've seen alot of gangster films (I haven't, unfortunately.), then you won't find much different in this movie.

What I really liked about this movie was Johnny Depp's acting. I never really was a Johnny fan, but I praised him for his work. And this movie showed me that Johnny Depp deserves the praise. I thought Christan Bale's performance was...mediocre. The accent totally didn't suit him and his acting as a whole wasn't all that good.
I thought that they should have explained the character's more, and not just Dillinger. I feel as if Christan Bale didn't get enough screen time. Most of the time I think the story feels a bit repetitive, but a good reptitive. Action scenes are good, and gangster films were always fun to watch. Story was good in my opinion, but I think at the beginning of the movie was a bit odd, and..random. I think introducing Dillinger's childhood would have been a better idea.
Some things left a question in my head...near the end. But I won't get in that too much as some people have not seen the movie. Again, more character development should have been put.

Overall, a great movie in my opinion. I enjoyed it very much. I was a bit skeptical at first. Then later on I didn't feel the need to watch and thought that it would be boring. I wasen't expecting too much of Michael Mann's latest film, but I was wrong. This is a great movie with wonderful drama and and action.
Maybe this review was a bit short, but I don't have much to say to Public Enemies. It is a great film and I recommend it to people that enjoy gangster scenario films, drama, history, and much more.
