Update: Yes, I managed to fix the BD drive on my PS3 yesterday, and to be honest I'm not really sure how. I figured since it wasn't working and my warranty was void I'd just fiddle with some things. Seems to have worked, go figure

Completely coincidentally, but there I was playing Burnout Paradise online when my PS3 froze whilst changing from one Freeburn to another. I followed the correct procedure for shutting down but when I brought it back online my console would no longer read BDs. CDs and DVDs yes, but BDs no. Aside that all operations are normal. I've read many similar cases in the last couple months, all plaguing the 60GB NA/JAP models. Since my warranty has expired and I know the only solution from Sony is a $150 refurbished replacement **** that noise) I'm going to pop the lid this weekend and see about resetting the lens. On top of that the spring mechanism attached to the L2 button broke the day before. The controller is easily fixable if I have the parts but I very much doubt they're purchasable. Maybe I can fabricate my own...

So yes, 15 months after I bought my 60GB PS3 it's broken. Lessons learned? I shouldn't be buying first generation hardware, EVER, nor is b/c worth a $600 1/3 functioning console. But I don't learn and keep buying first generation products that stop working all too quickly. I'm just glad I'm a PC gamer first, since repairing/replacing components for a gaming rig are pretty fast, easy and cheap... Unless you manage to blow out your GPU, though EVGA has a lifetime warranty on all their cards so I think I'm good if that were to happen.

PS. Come to think of it, I might actually just sell my 60GB on ebay and replace it with a 40GB and a slim PS2. I don't know though, I really don't know... *shrug*

I'm thinking of hosting a Burnout Paradise freeburn game this Thursday at 7pm PST to complete one of 7 challenge sets. Which set we do would result in how many people show up. There are 50 challenges and an additional 10 timed challenges per set. The game will be on invite only, so just login to BP and I'll invite you in.
