I got called for jury duty today. Its for a criminal case which freaks me out. But it looks like that because I'm a student I can get out of it, which is good because its a Monday that I am supposed to go in and thats the day I have all my classes, if it was a Tuesday or Thursday I could go but not on a Monday. My mom is so jealous, she wanted me to send them a note saying she'd do it but I don't think she wants to be on a criminal case jury, what if there are graphic photos? She said it wouldn't be bad, that it would just be like CSI but I told her no it wouldn't because these would be real photos. I kinda wouldn't mind doing it, depending on the case but I can't afford to miss school.

I don't know how it is in the US but in Canada I will be excused for being a student, so no I don't have to go and that is the law.

Here in the US, the only real way to get excused is to get a doctor to give you a medical letter that states you can't do it. Other than that you try to get out of it by sending a letter stating you wish to be excused and why - and 9 out of 10 times they don't like it so you get called in anyway. Being a student here isn't that good of a reason to them.

In Canada you can be excuse for being a student, financial hardship (if missing work will cause you to suffer), medical reasons, you have a vacation booked, you're moving soon, or if you're 65 or over, and you can write a letter for any other reason and they'll consider it. You do need proof for any of the reasons though.
