Paul Barnett and Jeff Hickman, the Creative Director and Senior Producer behind Warhammer spend a lot of time talking about "Glory" internally, so it's something I constantly have on my brain.

It's difficult to explain glory without giving examples, but it's essentially the moments inside a game that make you feel joyous. It's why Brad can't help but use the word majesty when he talks about seeing a Colossus for the first time in Shadow of the Colossus. It's the awe. It's the secrets. It's the things you notice that you think you might be the only one to have noticed, a detail that's written on the wall, an inside joke, or a hidden passageway. It's the entire script of Psychonauts.

As an FPS, Team Fortress 2 is standard in many ways. They haven't reinvented the character archetypes, and they certainly haven't changed the way a twitch FPS is played. But as an example of what makes a game glorious and joyful, Team Fortress 2 is the acme.

Boys Don't Play Medics - (Or how I learned to stop fighting and heal a Heavy) - The support characters in Team Fortress 2 (such as the Engineer and the Medic) are done beautifully. I have always had a personal affinity for making support characters, but TF2 is one of the few games that I feel inherently rewards them. Watching my friends play Halo 3, I've noticed that it naturally pits everyone against each other, even within a team, as everyone angles to be the top spot on the leaderboard and increase their own rank. Team Fortress is a game about working together, where you go for "points" instead of "kills", which allows people like medics to get rewarded explicitly for getting out on the frontlines and healing the people in combat.

To add to the ambiance, each of the extremely personable characters in TF2 AUTOMATICALLY thanks the support characters. As I pop out of a teleport, I hear my character shout "THANK YOU HERR ENGINEER". It's the kind of thing that promotes positive online experiences, even if it is automatically triggered by the game.

Instructional Videos - I'm going to take a stab in the dark and guess that one of GameSpot's end of the year awards is going to be "Best Use of Film Projectors in a Game", because both Bioshock and TF2 have done them beautifully. I'd personally give the award to TF2, for not only being stylized, but also using them extremely functionally, by showing videos of how to play each map objective before you load the game. Dear FPS creators, they've set a bar and you can't go back now.

This Is Your Torso - Each time you die, there's this quick zoom in to your opponent, which shows you his remaining health, where he was standing, and sometimes the pieces of your blown apart body that lie around him. It's not often that I actually want to take a screenshot at this opportunity, but I have to admit to laughing out loud the first time I saw a little placard showing me one of my own body parts.

I'M ON FIYAH! - It was clear from the first time that Team Fortres 2 was showcased, that the look and feel of the game was going to be one of its greatest assets. Little did we know then how pervasive it was going to be. Since each of the characters embodies a particular archetype, they've also been given particular stereotypes: the Aussie Sniper, the french Spy, the American Soldier. The nuances of these, such as my medic shouting in his thick German accent "I'M ONNN FIYAAAAH!" after a run-in with a pyro, or said pyro's muffled call for "Medic!" are so enjoyable, that I often find myself recounting new discoveries over the watercooler at work the next day.

Winnar! - One of the simple enjoyable aspects of TF2 is the way in which you are rewarded for being successful. At the end of each round, when the summary screen pops up, the losing team's weapons are removed from them, and you have a few seconds to hunt down anyone that may have been left alive to finish them off. This brief game of cat and mouse is almost like a game within a game, as a loser I make it my every mission to stay alive by running and hiding from the winners.

According to Steam, I've played 64 hours of Team Fortress 2 in the last week and a half, and the funny thing is... I don't feel the slightest bit tired of it yet. I don't know all the things that make a game great, but just being this damn fun has certainly got to be one of them.

I admit, I was skeptical of TF2's cartoony style, and have thought to myself that will be the only game in the Orange Box I won't play, or at least, not as much. I haven't picked up "the Box" yet, but from your little review here, it sounds quite fun, and I'm now just as exited about playing it just about as much as the other Orange Box games. On that note, how is Portal in your opinion? I've asked multiple people on my friends list, and they all say its difficult, and seem to have been somewhat disappointed. Let me know, if/when you get the chance, CvG.

It's probably the position I'd play, truth be told.

Well Carrie, I'd say you're attached to the fact it's obviously a great multiplayer huh? If you didn't know what makes a great game then. I'm just taking a wild guess and saying you do now?

This has made me want to buy this game even more(it's out friday here) I'm still not sure how well it will run tho. But if i can run HL 2 good, will this run fine. anyone can tell me?

I might wait for the PS3 version. I just hope it's as great.

I'll be getting it soon, ive been looking forward to the orange box for a long time. Best value in gaming, without a doubt.

Boys don't play Medic in TF2? If I had the game right now, i'd love to be Medic. Saving lives is fun (assuming your teammates know how to protect you).

I've been thinking about getting the Orange Box, and Circuit City is selling it this week for $40 for PC. I might have to pick it up!

The only thing I really hate about TF2 are the chances for "critical hits" to be achieved. I mean why have that in there? I find it screws around with the insanely well-done balance of the entire game.

I've been trying to play the game on the 360, but for some reason I've experienced extreme lag every single time. It looks so awesome too . I wonder what's wrong.

Really interesting post. I'm unable to play Team Fortress but it sounds great... I'd always go for the supporting classes in Battlefield and I was so excited when they started saying how important the normailly lesser classes would be.

From what I'm reading it seems that more people than I thought missed out on the original TFC. Thanks for the screenshots, Carrie. Finally a Medic can get a real reward for healing someone else that's mowing the other team down.

I loved playing a medic in CoD3, so your theory is debunked. Debunked, I say!
Posted Oct 13, 2007 10:47 pm PT
Looking forward for the Orange Box. Oh yeah.

TF2 is awesome. Hope you are playing it on PC, but you prolly aren't Oh well the 360 version is a good alternative. And I know a guy, he's a good friend of mine, he LOVES medic and playing monk on Guild Wars. And he is straight lol.. I don't mind since he is a good medic and monk.

I do enjoy Team Fortress 2. But honestly, I'm having trouble tearing myself away from Portal long enough to sink some real time into it.

That said...I'm usually a medic. Nobody else ever does it!

I've always liked support classes as well. Battlefield 2 really got me into being Medics and Engineers where players would actually thank you for helping them. Kinda cool. Team play all the way baby! I even like how Call Of Duty 4 implements an Assist score into your total which is pretty cool. On a side note... Should I get PC or 360 version of Orange Box?

Man that game is awesome, to bad it would not come out for the Wii

Very well written !!

In completely unrelated news... Bionic Commando!

I agree, my only real problem with Halo 3 is most times there seems to be no real team work. Thats why I love TF2 and Gears, because if you run around on your own your going to die...alot, so helping and looking out for your mates becomes a vital part of each match.

On my first day with TF2 i expected to play the sniper and soldier all day. I ended up playing almost all medic.
Posted Oct 16, 2007 11:28 pm PT
Medics, pah! Manly men tooooootally play engineers though. Although it's usually girly men like myself and Busman. Are you PC'ing it or have you been completely lost to the dark side.

I am really bad at this game right now but I'm hoping I'll get it together after a bit. I've been tempted to try to drag some old timers together for nostalgia games but hardly know how to contact anyone anymore.

I love the stat system. My K/D is seldom anything to write home about, but when most of those kills are quality wrench-mashings it feels like a lot more.

i was going to wait for some money to come about, but i am running to best buy and charging the orange box to my credit card.

Still waiting for my X360 version to arrive from Amazon. One of these days I'll learn not to order games along with books and other stuff from there that always seem to delay the process.

I assume you're playing the PC version Carrie?

I've been playing the heck outta of the demoman lately. I just can't get enough of this game. I think that I should be burnt out on it considering how much I have played it but I am just not.

I should be getting Orange Box (X360) later today, maybe an hour or so from now.

I played as medic about 95% of the time in Call of Duty 3, they reward you the same points as getting a kill for reviving a fallen teamate, not to mention playing splitscreen and driving around in a jeep making ambulance noises is hilarious. Over 4,000 revives in that game, and would likely be more if my disc hadn't broken. I don't really know what to think about Team Fortress 2, i'd never heard of it until it's early coverage on the site. So long as it's average or better should be a blast.

Justin, Xfire is only on PCs so i'm sure she's got the PC version.

I love Team Fortress 2. It's without a doubt one of the greatest multiplayer games I've ever played.
Posted Oct 19, 2007 3:39 pm PT
Team Fortress 2 was worth the wait, the multi-player experience of ACTUAL teamwork unlike showcased in Halo 3 is what makes the game fun along with the cartoony look, interesting dialogue, and such. Shame though that it's 6 maps at the start
Posted Oct 20, 2007 3:32 pm PT
im going to have to whole heartedly agree. TF2 is almost unlike any other multiplayer FPS i've played, and I don't get sick of it very quickly. the one complaint i have about all of it is the lack of map variation. I'm sick of trying to play cat and mouse in Attack/Defend games. So irritating.

And Girls just wanna have fun.

Well thats got me hyped for the Orange Box. Thanks Carrie for a great post!

word...TF2 is excellent fun.

Boys dont play medics because they dont help or support or heal others, they arent caring or loving like women are

women are awesome *less than three sign*

and I mean in general and as a whole

what's really interisting about TF2's art is that the found this caricature style that never comes off as offensive. In fact my girlfriend finds some of the men handsome and my male friends think the smile of the Heavy is just too lovable. By the way, it's amazing at how a medic can actually rank up at the top of the list if they are played well.
