My mother and I love retro themed TV shows (with the exception of Swingtown, bleah). So when I brought home "Mad Men" this week I knew that it was going to be something that she would enjoy too.

It all started when I was reading People Magazine. There was a tiny blurb on the left hand page in the lower right corner about the clothing that the women in "Mad Men" wear. Those two pictures led to the show website which then lead on a meandering path through obsession-ville, reading everything that I could before actually going to purchase the show on DVD!

Well that time happened on Tuesday when I went to Best Buy with the goal of buying the last two seasons of NewsRadio (now I have the whole series) and Mad Men. Thanks to my $10 off coupon and a gift card from Christmas since I had to return stuff, I only had to pay $1.61! Awesome.

Since I wanted to watch it with my mom we waited until last night and watched the first two episodes. It's wonderful. It really makes me think. It kinda makes me wish that it was around when I was in college because then I could be watching it right now (we don't have cable) and it would be the perfect subject for a communications' major's thesis.

One question though: Why is it that cable almost always seems to have the better TV shows?! Oh well...

Have a great Labor Day weekend!

I don't watch Mad Men, but I think the networks seem to have more riding on their shows, so they don't want to take risks.

That makes a lot of sense. It's one of those things where the networks find out that something is popular and then the next season there are a bunch of shows that are exactly the same. Crazy!

What is Mad Men about?

Mad Men is about an advertising agency in the 1960s revolving around Don Draper. The show switches between his work life and his family life. Of course there was one thing that my mom really picked up on..."Wow they really smoke a lot." Which I then added..."Yeah and they drink a lot." There's a lot of stereotypes and double standards that are interesting as well.

Sounds interesting. People did smoke a lot in the sixties, when they didn't have to go outside to do it!
