Maybe I'm just remembering wrong, but are "special editions" of games WAY more common than they used to be? It seems like, as recently as just a few years ago, special editions used to actually be special. They would only come out for long time established franchises that have huge fanbases. Now they seem to come out for every minor game, weather it's as established franchise or not.

Is any one else getting sick of these less than special games getting special editions? It just takes away from excitement of games that actually deserve them.

Yea a lot of special edition games these days just tend to have some cheap posters or an extra disc that has nothing interesting on it. I still enjoy the Collector's Edition ones though.

I don't know. Special editions have always been around. I mean, look at how many Street Fighter 2's there is. But I guess they are more common now.

They ARE way more common and you can think back and thank Doom3 for why publishers are oh so eager to charge us an extra $10 and upwards for a tin case and some making of DVD.

I was part of the problem, I bought that little sucker, and since then the SE's and CE's have gone nuts.

The height of insanity? The Two Worlds CE. here is a game that no-one had played before (no franchise, no following) and yet the publisher thought, Add $10 make the case silver voila! And the game stunk on top of that.
