At a GDC press conference, Insomniac Games (responsible for Ratchet & Clank and Resistance: Fall of Man on PS3) has announced a ground breaking initiative to open up their technologies for the development community at large. Through the "Nocturnal Initiative," Insomniac Games is attempting to break the common development practice of keeping technological advances a close-guarded secret. As they noted, "developers spend resources solving problems that have already been solved."

A public site (nocturnal.insomniacgames.com) will give developers access to various parts of Insomniac source code. Libraries have already been made available, with more on the way. Through a Wiki-****interface, Insomniac hopes that they will allow everyone to "make better games."

The tools available will obviously work on PS3, but because it is a PC-based environment, should work on Xbox 360 as well. Joystiq will be chatting with Insomniac shortly. Stay tuned.

This is a very cool offer on Insomniacs part. Not only do they make some of the best games out there but they are willing to help others elevate thier games aswell.

I'm glad they did that Big time devs need to throw the small time ones a bone.

Such a show of maturity and vision of the bigger picture is rare these days, good for them.

community is what makes gaming so awesome.

Cool, sounds like a lot of us benefit from that!
Posted Feb 22, 2008 9:36 am PT
Yes it would seem that it does benefit the whole gaming community which is great.

watch the microsoft keynote they are doing great stuff for indie game development on the 360

Yeah Kaz I read about it and I like the direction things are going in.

even if micro soft can't do a darn thing right on their native turf(pc) they are sure doing well in the console market, if only my 360 wasn't dieing.

Kaz I really don't thing Micro is doing as well as they could be doing in the console market because of the very issue you are having. Even if you were to take a low estimate of failue say around 20% it would still be way to high in most peoples opions. We are more than two years in and still it is still not right. At this point I wonder if the commetment to fix this situation is there for this cycle ? I think about my 360 crapping out every time I turn it on and that is a sad statement.

microsoft has the best software, games and other wise on there system, how much is that worth if you know your system is destined to brick in the immediate future. why won't they just man up and recall every console and start fresh.
Posted Feb 26, 2008 4:20 am PT
You know Kaz I think if they were to fix the situation for sure people would flock to buy it and not mind maybe even to buy another one because of what you just mentioned and that is the games !

the ps3 is starting to really move now that blue ray is for the win, many of my friends back in chicago want one just for HD movie formats.
Posted Feb 26, 2008 5:19 pm PT
the blue ray may just save the ps3 this time.
Posted Feb 27, 2008 4:37 am PT
I think that the games that are coming this year will add to the Blu-Ray momentum and make for strong sales. A year ago it seemed a bit rough for Sony so its good to see things changing around. Its funny how the PS3 seems to be mirroring the PS2. Having strong competition is really pushing innovation in many ways. Its wednesday Kaz so join us on Halo 3 for some good laughs....
