Windows 7 has arrived and, while I embrace it with a certain amount of trepidation, I have not been so excited about an operating system since Windows 2000. I've been using Windows 7 since the Beta on my main PC for a time and full-time on my relatively new dedicated home theater PC. Windows 7 is a joy to use, it is fast, efficient, and able to resolve issues on behalf of the user at surprising speed. I will not be sad to say a final goodbye to 32-bit Windows XP.

The first worthwhile operating system in, what, a decade?

Don't call it a comeback; call it... a trial run.

Woohoo! A comeback!

I am less interested in Windows 7 than I am in the chance to be rid of Vista.

Couldn't agree more. I'm one of the few people crazy enough to actually have liked a number of the features in Vista... Don't ask, probably too many years of WoW damaged neurons.

I've been running 7 on an old desktop and found that it got me using that hunk o' junk again, something I never thought possible. Hopefully this weekend I'll have the time to backup everything and do a fresh wipe of 7 to get that new OS smell.

That must be good lookin personally i still use the xp

This one really pisses me off. Windows is the only operating system left in existence that you can't simply download the upgrade for. Why did I have to fill out an order form? Why am I waiting a week to receive a piece of electrical duct-tape. Darned thing should have downloaded straight to my machine, but no, M$ is the most backwards company on the face of the Earth...

I've heard it's very promising and really good. Thing is, I don't know if it'll work on this comp, this thing's a piece of crap :/

I can't tell if that is a look of smug satisfaction, scared skepticism, or surprised serendipity.

Or maybe he just has gas?

I miss Mac OS 8.5.

I have yet to see a compelling reason to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7. (Nerds on the Internet saying that Windows Vista is terrible and Windows 7 is good is not a compelling reason.) There doesn't appear to be anything that I'd want to do with Windows 7 that I'm not already doing with Windows Vista.

Sure, when I replace my current computer, I'll get one with Windows 7 pre-installed, but I am in no rush to do that either.

@bacchus2 - I just had beef stew curry for lunch, I know I do...

Wait, you're still alive?

Haha I just booted 7 ultimate on my computer today, and so far it's basically a cleaner Vista which is a good thing. I plan on researching some of the more useful features available.

I was thinking about upgrading to it... but some of my Microsoft Hardware (Mouse, Keyboard) and other things were said not to be compatible when I ran the upgrade advisor. I will have to just stay in Vista until I get a new computer... but hope you enjoy the new Operating System!

Wasn't Windows 2000 XP's Vista, and XP 2000's 7?!

"The first worthwhile operating system in, what, a decade?"

Bold statement. Don't make it on Cnet.

Also, how are the kids?

I'm still using XP on my archaic piece of PC. It's good to see a positive blog about an OS of Windows, what a contrast with all those negative ones about Vista.

Wow, an endorsement from the Boz. I guess I'll have to upgrade when I get a new comp.

I was clinging on to XP because Vista was so bad. Glad to hear they got it right with Windows 7.

Most people I will sell 7 to, will be because they want to rid themselves of Vista. The rest will still opt for XP while it's available. 7 is decent though, I ran the beta and RC and I liked it, but I have no need for the extra overhead until games start taking advantage of SM5.0 and DX11.

@johnsteed7 - It's not a comeback!

@teirdome - I was surprised at how versatile W7 is, concerning old hardware. Typically new operating systems from Microsoft have had progressively greater system requirements, but W7 scales really well. It's no Xubuntu, but still runs well on modest systems.

@rebelway - There is no reason yet to upgrade to W7, but it will almost assuredly be the new standard OS for PC users, so I figured I'd get on board early.

@grigjd3 - Actually, you can download the upgrade: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/default.aspx
Also, Microsoft is not backwards, it's BIG. Big companies move slowly. Nature of the beast, I'm afraid.

@aryoshi - Check out the minimum system requirements at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

@polsci1503 - D, all of the above.

@bacchus2 - Nah; this was early. I did have some baked beans and grapes later in the day, though...

@Thraxen - I have some choice words for Mac. They are the Sony of the computer world with all their proprietary formats and hardware. They've come a long way as far as adding the ability to run Windows on their hardware, but they're so closed-source it's scary. That being said, Windows 7 made a number of performance improvements that were my primary motivation to upgrade. You should see a marked improvement over Vista on most hardware.

@xboxrulze - Clean Vista; I like it. I'm alive, just a bit worn down.

@Sandpiper121PP - If you're planning on getting a new PC in the next year anyway, just wait to do the upgrade then. It is unlikely that Vista will be unable to support software released in the near future, so you should be all set.

@Foolz3h - Nope; Windows ME was the garbage OS that came before 2000. W2000 was actually the core that XP was based off. It kept the core operations of 2000 and added the compatibility of 97 (remember 97?). W2000 was, at the time, a breath of fresh air. It never crashed; never. Loved it.

@zgreenwell - Bah; a bunch of Ubuntu monkeys! I am not now nor have I ever been a Mac fan (for reasons listed above to Thraxen), and Ubuntu is too technical for mainstream users still. However, should Ubuntu improve I may try it out again in a few builds.

@tinoshke - Vista hurt so, so much, but it feels so good to upgrade from XP to be able to take advantage of all my memory, dual-cores, and 64-bit OS.

@gamer_girl15 - No more reason to wait.
Posted Oct 27, 2009 5:02 am PT
@GunnyHath - I'd be very surprised if people continue to hang on to XP while they can; XP has its own issues - particularly concerning security and its inability to take advantage of full system resources - and Microsoft has already announced its intent to discontinue support for it at some point in the future (they've already tried to phase it out once before). I think you'll see more demand for 7 than anticipated, but I completely agree the only people to buy the standalone product are going to be to get rid of Vista; XP users will just wait until their next PC upgrade, I believe.

Just wanted to let you know, there is not a very compelling reason for people who have a powerful Vista computer to bother moving to seven, especially if they primarily use it for gaming. Sure windows 7 is a little snappier here and there, but the OS are foundationally the same. I still wouldn't try to suggest Vista for a P4 system with 512 RAM, but seven would be great. While I know I'm not in the majority, my Quad Core 4 GB RAM 64 bit Vista system is just fine for me.

There are plenty of large companies that move very quickly. While size has overhead, there is a great deal more overhead at Microsoft than at some other companies. I think a large part of their problems has to do with a monolithic business structure that has been allowed to remain in place due to a previous earned dominance in the market place (much like the big three auto companies during the 70s and on).

Oooh.... monkey trousers! *sulks*

Bad enough that my laptop's HD DVD function is obsolete, now it's operating system is too? Damn you Vista, you were supposed to be 'the one'!

My dad is running it on his computer....I'm still enslaved by Vista.
