Windows 7 has arrived and, while I embrace it with a certain amount of trepidation, I have not been so excited about an operating system since Windows 2000. I've been using Windows 7 since the Beta on my main PC for a time and full-time on my relatively new dedicated home theater PC. Windows 7 is a joy to use, it is fast, efficient, and able to resolve issues on behalf of the user at surprising speed. I will not be sad to say a final goodbye to 32-bit Windows XP.

The first worthwhile operating system in, what, a decade?

I am less interested in Windows 7 than I am in the chance to be rid of Vista.
I've been running 7 on an old desktop and found that it got me using that hunk o' junk again, something I never thought possible. Hopefully this weekend I'll have the time to backup everything and do a fresh wipe of 7 to get that new OS smell.
Or maybe he just has gas?
I have yet to see a compelling reason to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7. (Nerds on the Internet saying that Windows Vista is terrible and Windows 7 is good is not a compelling reason.) There doesn't appear to be anything that I'd want to do with Windows 7 that I'm not already doing with Windows Vista.
Sure, when I replace my current computer, I'll get one with Windows 7 pre-installed, but I am in no rush to do that either.
Haha I just booted 7 ultimate on my computer today, and so far it's basically a cleaner Vista which is a good thing. I plan on researching some of the more useful features available.
Bold statement. Don't make it on Cnet.
Also, how are the kids?
@teirdome - I was surprised at how versatile W7 is, concerning old hardware. Typically new operating systems from Microsoft have had progressively greater system requirements, but W7 scales really well. It's no Xubuntu, but still runs well on modest systems.
@rebelway - There is no reason yet to upgrade to W7, but it will almost assuredly be the new standard OS for PC users, so I figured I'd get on board early.
@grigjd3 - Actually, you can download the upgrade: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/default.aspx
Also, Microsoft is not backwards, it's BIG. Big companies move slowly. Nature of the beast, I'm afraid.
@aryoshi - Check out the minimum system requirements at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx
@polsci1503 - D, all of the above.
@bacchus2 - Nah; this was early. I did have some baked beans and grapes later in the day, though...
@Thraxen - I have some choice words for Mac. They are the Sony of the computer world with all their proprietary formats and hardware. They've come a long way as far as adding the ability to run Windows on their hardware, but they're so closed-source it's scary. That being said, Windows 7 made a number of performance improvements that were my primary motivation to upgrade. You should see a marked improvement over Vista on most hardware.
@Sandpiper121PP - If you're planning on getting a new PC in the next year anyway, just wait to do the upgrade then. It is unlikely that Vista will be unable to support software released in the near future, so you should be all set.
@Foolz3h - Nope; Windows ME was the garbage OS that came before 2000. W2000 was actually the core that XP was based off. It kept the core operations of 2000 and added the compatibility of 97 (remember 97?). W2000 was, at the time, a breath of fresh air. It never crashed; never. Loved it.
@zgreenwell - Bah; a bunch of Ubuntu monkeys! I am not now nor have I ever been a Mac fan (for reasons listed above to Thraxen), and Ubuntu is too technical for mainstream users still. However, should Ubuntu improve I may try it out again in a few builds.
@tinoshke - Vista hurt so, so much, but it feels so good to upgrade from XP to be able to take advantage of all my memory, dual-cores, and 64-bit OS.
@gamer_girl15 - No more reason to wait.
Bad enough that my laptop's HD DVD function is obsolete, now it's operating system is too? Damn you Vista, you were supposed to be 'the one'!
