Here we go with another of my now famous double reviews. I've done a couple of these already, and here is yet another one. The first movie up to bat is:
which doen't come out until next weekend. I actually saw it a couple weeks ago after getting a free ticket to a sneak preview screening from Warped Tour. Anyway, it tells the story of Fish (Rainn Wilson of TV's "The Office"), a washed up drummer from the 80s smash hit band Vesuvious, who join's his nephew's high school band and makes them big stars mostly due to a YouTube video featuring him drumming naked. Dispite it's appearence as a completely meaningless stupid comedy, which it is to some respect, The Rocker has a lot of heart. It also features shameless Rock Band product placement and in some ways seems like it's reaching out to wanna be rockers. It features some pretty solid original music and a lot of quite hilarious moments. Wilson proves that he can make a movie funny by himself and does a solid job of carrying The Rocker beyond comedy mediocraty and into the promised land of awesomeness. Ok, maybe not that far, but it's still a solidly funny movie that is worth the price of admission.
Grade: B+
The second part of this double header review belongs to:
which I saw tonight at midnight and comes out today. Let me first say that I do really enjoy most of Will Ferrell's stupid comedies as well as the vast majority of Judd Aptow's work as well. This movie is probably one of Ferrell's best and is up there with other Aptow ****cs such as Superbad and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It's the story of Brennan (Ferrell) and his new step brother, Dale (John C. Reilly) and their quest to understand each other as well as finally how to grow up. If you are familiar with most of Aptow's other movies as well as Ferrell's work, you will know exactly what to expect from this. It's a really stupid, but absolutely hilarious film filled with lots of language and crude sexual humor. If you can tolerate that, or if you find it funny, you will absolutely love this movie. It is easily one of the most quotable movies of the summer and really just has to be seen to be believed. It is great for remembering old childhood tendencies and laughing about how obserd it would be if you did them as an adult. If you have already seen Batman (preferably at least twice), then you should go see this movie. It's the funnest movie ever!
Grade: A
Now, since I have seen almost every major movie that has been released this summer, I bet you are wondering what my Top 10 movies of this summer are at the moment. Well, you are in luck because I have a top 10 list right here! Please note that I might have forgotten about a movie or two, so please bare with me if this list changes.
10.
It is one of the most visually stunning films to come out in years. Speed Racer features a tallented cast, brilliant effects and definately pleased fans of the TV series.
9.
It was one of the most hyped movies of the year, and it wasn't up to snuff. Dispte that fact, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was still a great tribute to the original trilogy and is a fun adventure romp on it's own that is better than Temple of Doom...
8.
It may have lost some of the charm of the first Narnia flick, but Prince Caspian still features solid battle sequences and is a great fantasy film on it's own.
7.
In addition to washing the bad taste of Ang Lee's Hulk out of our mouths, The Incredible Hulk gave the people the Hulk that they wanted in this very enjoyable action flick.
6.
It's a stunning action flick that is very easy to remember and enjoy long after you see it the first time.
5.
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly team up with Judd Aptow for yet another hilarious comedy romp that will leave you laughing after the credits roll.
4.
Disney-Pixar's latest may be visually stunning and somewhat political with it's message, but it's still a very powerful animated flick that ranks up there with their best.
3.
Marvel's man of iron has a spectacular debut thanks to a fantastic cast, especially Robert Downey Jr., and terrific direction by Jon Favreau.
2.
Screenwriter/star Jason Segel (TV's How I Met Your Mother, Knocked Up) and Veronica Mars herself, Kristen Bell, lead a fantastic cast in this hysterical comedy about loosing and finding love. It's totally a chick flick for guys, but it's still awesome...
1.
Words can barely describe how fantastic this movie is. With an Oscar worthy preformance by the late Heath Ledger as well as specacular direction by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Batman Begins), The Dark Knight is not only the best superhero movie of all time, but it's also one of the best crime movies and should be in the running for Best Picture. That is how good this movie is.
So there is my Top 10. Here are a couple movies that barely missed the cut and deserve honorable mentions:
Jack Black leads a very tallented voice cast in Dreamworks' best animated film since Over the Hedge.
A very funny Steve Carell and a very hot Anne Hathaway lead this solid new adaptation of the cla$$ic TV show.
So there you have it, my picks for the best of this summer so far. There are still a few weeks left and a few big movies left to be seen, so this might not be the last time you see this list, but it's getting closer and closer to being finished.
That's all for now.
Maybe some of you notised but I did briefly add Wii Fit to my collection. I officially owned it for a day because I traded it in today for $78, which is $13 more than what I payed for it. The only reason I didn't keep it was because I am apparently over the weight limit. Sure, I could have used it as incentive to loose weight, but honestly, the only reason that I baught it in the first place was because it was a used copy and it's hard to find. I wanted to use it, but couldn't.
I ended up using the credit to finish paying off my limited edition of Soulcalibur IV for 360 and pre-order Too Human and the limited edition of Madden 09 for 360. Now the last three games that I'll get before moving are pre-ordered.
I already saw Dark Knight twice and will see again tomorrow in a dome IMAX theater. I also got a free pass to the Baywalk IMAX theater as well, so I might end up seeing it again before the week is up.
Sorry I haven't been here much lately. I've just been really busy. I'll try to pop on here more often though.
That's all I guess. Peace!
"The night is darkest just before the dawn..." Harvey Dent
There is no question that one of the most antisipated films of this year was The Dark Knight, the sequel to 2005's fantastic Batman reboot, Batman Begins. Director Christopher Nolan took the caped crusader and made him into a dark brooding hero with the psychotic villians of Gotham City really stealing the stage. The Dark Knight is not only a fantastic sequel, but, and I really do mean this, it is also the single best superhero movie of all time and is quite possably one of the best crime movies of all time as well. It's truely a masterpiece of a film. The story is focused on Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) who has lost the love of his life (Maggie Gyllenhaal, replacing Katie Holmes), to Gotham City's new District Attorney and the self proclamed "white knight", Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). He also has to deal with the mysterious Joker (the late Heath Ledger) who is terrorising the city. Let's start with the basics, there was a ton of hype for this movie not only because of the fact that it was the amazing looking follow up to a stellar superhero flick, but the hype almost overloaded after Heath Ledger died of an accidental drug overdose. The role of the Joker was immortalized by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's Batman, but Heath Ledger's preformance is not only a lot better, but is one preformance that steals the show and will haunt you after you leave the theater. The Joker is completely psychotic, but still can be quite funny at the same time. Throw in a second "suprise" villian (not to those who are Batman fans) and tons of explosive action as well as one of the best endings I've ever seen and you have yourself a stellar film that is the best film of 2008, period. Oscar voters should definately keep supporting actor Heath Ledger, Director Nolan and the entire film in mind at the end of the year. It's seriously good enough to merrit a Best Picture nomination, if not a win.
Overall, The Dark Knight is a must see in every respect and will continue to haunt you until you see it again. It is simply an amazing film.
Grade: A++
I might try to write a review of:
later today, but who knows. Peace out, all!
