…because with so many Sci-Fi and fantasy shows on, the best of them get lost in the shuffle.  Firefly, Threshold, Enterprise, Angel, Dark Angel, and Farscape: all canceled before their time.  The viewership was too divided among inferior shows like Charmed, later seasons of Stargate SG-1 (which after the first seven should have been allowed to die), and others.  And it doesn’t stop.  Blade is one of the most atrocious shows on TV ever on TV, but people still watch it.  Battlestar Galactica started out excellently, but now the writers seem to have run out of ideas.  Stargate Atlantis is an inferior form of SG-1 is allowed to stay on because fans of the other series demand more of the same, even when the story has obviously run dry.  Shows are extended past there expiration date and, like sour milk, curdle and become things their creators never intended.

And people claim to be fans who don’t know the first thing about the genre.  They don’t understand that Sci-Fi/Fantasy is all about allegory, and exploration of the human condition through extraordinary circumstances.  They think it’s all about the surface plot, which is a major factor, but is only part of the story.  Thus shows that are about action and little else flood the market, and make it hard for the true diamonds in the ruff to survive.

This is one of the worst times ever to be a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Geek.

Firefly, Threshold, Dark Angel. I was so dissapointed when they fell. You're right about sci-fi being more than it is on the surface.

I used to think I liked science fiction. It was my second favorite genre on TV while I was growing up; comedies were first. But I couldn't stand to read it. Growing up, the things I read were non-fiction and readings for schoolwork. Nowadays, it's not much different.
