…because never before have there be so many Sci-Fi/Fantasy shows on TV. Between Eureka, Stargate SG-1/Atlantis, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, Kyle XY, Blade, the 4400, Smallville, Veronica Mars, the upcoming Dresden Files, and many others there has never been so many choices available for the discerning fan. Studios have never been so open to new series in the genre and new shows are come out all the time.
Sci-Fi/Fantasy was never been so mainstream. Chances are if you talked to a random person on the street under the age of forty one of their favorite shows would be in the above list. This greater exposure means larger budgets and longer runs for our favorite shows. It used to be that a Sci-Fi show was considered a success if it ran for three seasons; now Between SG-1 and Charmed old records have been shattered.
This is the Best time ever to be a Sci-Fi/Fanstasy Geek.

Of that list, I was only a fan of Smallville (for the first season and most of the second season, that was pretty much all I thought about in my downtime). I saw the 1970's Battlestar Galactica, but I don't remember most of it. I saw a few episodes of Charmed while I was still interested in Smallville. Now I occasionally watch reruns of Star Trek: The Next Generation {which I enjoyed immensely while it was still first-run} on G4. The latest sci.-fi.-flavored TV series I enjoyed was the Discovery!Kids Channel series Strange Days at Blake Holsey High.
