Tis that wonderful time of year again when the leaves change color and the air turns as crisp as a newly opened video game. Halloween is around the corner, and it's only fitting that we as game enthusiasts snuggle ourselves in games appropriate for this grand of holidays (we really should get the day off)

Without further banter, I give you, groovy games to play for the Halloween Holiday:

1. Silent Hill 2: A letter from Silent Heaven (PS2)

If you have never experienced the psychological horror that a Silent Hill game has to offer, then this is a good place and time to start. No need to play the first, as this one is a stand alone, but if it peaks your interest enough to try the others, PLAY THEM IN ORDER! Grab the greatest hits version, as it has extra content not found in the standard version. Emotionally taxing and genuinely disturbing, Silent Hill 2 is a must for the season.

2. Splatterhouse 2 (Genesis/Megadrive)

Still the goriest and most violent game to grace a console, Jack Thompson would jump on this like a randy teenage boy on prom-night. I mean, name another game where you cut up aborted fetuses hanging from their umbilical chords? And to think, this game was originally released in 92!!!! Challenging game play, tons and tons of blood, guts, brains, decapitation, ghosts, and everything to give you a good time for M-rated candy muncing!

3. Shadowgate (NES, GameBoy Color)

This old point and click adventure game still gives me some chills down the spine. Creepy music, and some rather gruesome death descriptions still make this a perfect horror game in my book.

4. Castlevania 4 (SNES)

Still my favorite Castlevania, the perfect blend of dark ambiance and an incredible music score make this stand above the rest. The game just drips Halloween atmosphere. Perfect when played at Midnight. Grab the Japanese version if possible: It's un-edited.

5. Medieval (PSone, PSP)

Throw in a sprinkle of Tim Burton, Ghosts and Goblins, Maximo, some good British humor, and you have a rather silly but fun game for the season. Not the best game in the world, but appropriate.

6. The Splatter Action (PS2, Japan only)

Part of the simple series on Japan (Vol 64), this beat-em-up has you play as a rather adorable little boy with a pumpkin for a head. Armed with your fists and chainsaws, you go level by level turning equally adorable baddies onto a bloody mess! Ahh, I love the irony!

7. Zombie Vs. The Ambulance (PS2, Japan only)

Also a Simple series game (Vol 95), and made by the same folks who brought you the Splatter action. You drive around in a (guess this) ambulance saving infected victims and bringing them back to the hospital before they go all brain-hungry on you! However, on the way, you get to power up and improve you vehicle by....running over zombies over, and over again! Body parts fly, blood splatters, and your newly acquired front-bumper-blade slices bodies like a knife through a sternum! Good times!

8. Fatal Frame (AKA Zero, PS2, XBOX)

Based off of actual events, the Fatal Frame series does a wonderful job of introducing an audience to the Japanese view of the paranormal. This is one of the few series of Horror games other than Silent Hill to actually make you uncomfortable, creep-ed out, and give you reason to sleep with the light on.

9. Ghouls and Ghosts (Genesis, Megadrive, Arcade)

Punishing game-play, pissed-off bosses, and an undeniable Halloween charm put this one on the list. Nearly any game in the series is worth checking out (including Maximo), but this one happens to be a personal favorite.

10. The Onechan Bara 2: Puru (PS2, Japan only)

Yep, another in the Simple series line (Vol 101). Girls in bikinis cutting up Zombies with swords. Do I really need to say more?

11. Otogi 2 (XBOX)

A horribly under appreciated game, a blend of hack-n-slash meets Japanese mythological horror with perfect control, interesting characters, and a rather dark edge make this game worth trying. Not too many games have a portion of the main characters kill themselves at the onset. Impressive graphics, wonderful Gagaku score, and a genuinely beautiful view of Japanese action horror make this a perfect game for October.

So, there you have 11 of my favorites. What, no Resident Evil Baroque? For me, I like horror to remain in the supernatural element. Once you begin to explain through science as to why you have zombies roving the town, it loses it's fright-factor for me. It becomes more sci-fi than horror. Not that sci-fi can't be horror (Alien) but I just like the genre more....ethereal.

How about you fine folks? Got any fave horror games to share with us?

Happy Hallows-eve!

Fatal frame is one of the scariest games ever, the scariest i have played anyways. Good list, love Castlevania 4.

I just pig out on candy, but maybe i'll get some horror games, and turn of the lights
nice list anway.

Although some won't agree, I think Alien Trilogy is a great game to play on Halloween. it's not a scary game, really, but it can get creepy (at least to me) playing it when you're tired with all the lights out and running it through a surround sound system.

F.E.A.R., anyone?
Posted Oct 13, 2007 3:44 pm PT
TimeSplitters 2 (the Notre Dame level) and Primal.

Other games to consider its, FEAR plus expansion, Condemned Criminal Origins, Call of Cthulhu, Clive Barkers Undying and Clive Barkers Jericho

FEAR definetly! So scary. And Condemned too. Also the Ravenolm levels of Half Life 2 are really scary!
Posted Oct 13, 2007 4:51 pm PT
arg! i'm still trying to lick my wounds from being pummled in Otogi 2
Posted Oct 13, 2007 4:53 pm PT
the original horror game for me? DOOM (PSone version) of course!! when you get to the later levels, man that game gets intense. also i know it's on every list, but that's because RE4 really needs to be there. i can't stress enough, if you like video games, buy it.

Yeah, my mate was sweating his head off playing FEAR, even on the first level. But a nice list anyway, for those of you less inclined to the hardcore horror scene why not try to log on to your favourite MMO this halloween season, a special event is almost guaranteed. Heck, even Simpsons Hit and Run or that Scooby Doo game for Gamecube have special October 31st content.

Clive Barker's Undying is just simply terrifying. Aside from that, I only have one other suggestion (one I haven't seen mentioned here yet, much to my horror.) Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. It was the only Gamecube game I had for years save that Zelda promotional disc, and Eternal Darkness is still awesome. A little dated graphically, but I think it has held up pretty well to the ravages of time. Really, I'd recommend this to anyone with a Gamecube and some time on their hands. Oh, and Bioshock is pretty freaky and shocking, though I can see how it doesn't fit on your list due to it being heavily into science fiction and pseudo-genetics. Also, I guess the shrewd player would feel no fear at all due to the vita chambers. Personally, I just play as if the vita chambers don't exist. I find that the fear factor goes up immensely if you can just ignore those blessed cylinders of resurrection.

I ended up buying a copy of Resident Evil (REmake) on my way home from work; I plan to play through that as well as getting around to finishing up Code Veronica. Good list, I remember quite a few of those games!

Resident Evil the original for the PS1 scared me that I could only play it in the day time...
Condemned-Xbox360
F.E.A.R--

marine campaign from alien vs predator
Posted Oct 13, 2007 7:18 pm PT
pretty good list but i think bioshock should have been on it
Posted Oct 13, 2007 7:28 pm PT
FEAR and Condemned were both pretty freaky games that I'd add to that list for those who are looking for a more modern-aged horror game.
Posted Oct 13, 2007 7:58 pm PT
Eternal Darkness for Gamecube is a great horror game. Its often overlooked but i would recommend it to anyone.
Posted Oct 13, 2007 8:07 pm PT
Where's Uninvited? The sequel to Shadowgate!
Posted Oct 13, 2007 8:49 pm PT
Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame are great picks. Then again, any in the Silent Hill series is worth a play, specially during the jack-o-lantern day. Condemned: Criminal Origins is a very great game to play as well.

cutting up aborted fetuses. gross
Posted Oct 13, 2007 9:05 pm PT
cool list. One of my favorite horror games is Eternal Darkness
Posted Oct 14, 2007 12:43 am PT
System Shock 2 is another game that should've been on your list, definitely. Needs some PC, that's for sure.
Posted Oct 14, 2007 1:14 am PT
Ghost Master is a good one, challenging but awesome.
Posted Oct 14, 2007 2:41 am PT
I'm glad someone besides me appreciates the Splatterhouse series. Though one game I would add is the Japanese only Clocktower game for SNES.

RE4 was really a low point in the Resident Evil series. Give me Resident Evil 2 any day.

RE series where much scarier before RE4, for me RE4 took everything scary from the RE series and transformed it into just action. Yet, I prefer RE4 to any other RE, cause of the gameplay really rocks!

I believe RE5 will not be scary aswell since it's going to be like RE4 and that makes for me RE5 a must buy! I wish it could be scary like the others... but the gameplay is enough for me

System Shock 2. You knows it!
Posted Oct 14, 2007 5:16 am PT
Otogi is the awesomeness, and so are Condemned, and the Clive Barker's Jericho game that's about to come out. The demo blew me away, a definite sleeper hit .

Scary games? How about Barbie? Too pink for me. Not that I played it mind you. I saw the horrors of the case, and it repulsed me away. What I find bizarre is moments in games that are really scary, even when the game is not even meant to be scary. Shadow Of Memories is quite creepy and scary I find. But for the pure horror and shocker games I can think of a few.

Doom 3 (first time play through was one creepy ass ride)
Silent Hill 2 (already mentioned, but worth mentioning again)
Another World (Quite the creepy and atmospheric game)
Dark Seed (Incredibly creepy and bizarre)
Exmortis and Exmortis 2 (both are these are flash games and are really scary, you can find them at Newgrounds.com)
Clock Tower (Very scary, still scary to this day)
Eternal Darkness: Sanity Requiem (scary, now for anyone who says otherwise, is a liar)

Id really love, to see splatter house again *sighs* such fun times.
Posted Oct 14, 2007 6:19 am PT
My favorites are Silent Hill or Fatal Frame, which you've mentioned, and Eternal Darkness which others have mentioned.

As far as other games that haven't been listed:

The Thing was pretty good, I'd play it again.

As a fangirl, I like the Buffy games this time of year.

I have yet to play the Suffering, I got it a couple of years ago to play during this season; maybe I'll be brave enough this year, (but I also prefer the supernatural horror and less so the gore).

The original silent hill still scares the hell outta me 2day lol. the school bit is the worst lol
Posted Oct 14, 2007 9:07 am PT
Sweet list, and it's good to see no Resident Evil. Fresh.
Posted Oct 14, 2007 10:44 am PT
Half life 2 ravenholm is very scary with all the crazy zombie's jumping on building's and screaming when you set them on fire
Posted Oct 14, 2007 10:44 am PT
I forgot about Stubbs the Zombie; it's not scary, but it's also pretty fun at this time of year.
Posted Oct 14, 2007 10:48 am PT
I would have picked
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES)
Fear Effect (PS)
Posted Oct 14, 2007 11:07 am PT
REremake is missing
Posted Oct 14, 2007 1:41 pm PT
The demon-infested Shin Megami Tensei games are always good for some Halloween fun. I'm actually playing through Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army right now.
Posted Oct 14, 2007 1:41 pm PT
Indigo Prophecy is actually a good game for this season too. Is not scary, but is suspenseful and the story is great. And I can't believe I forgot Rule of Rose. Sure, the game-play is as scary as it gets (meaning bad) but the story and setting are worth every drop of frustration from the broken controls (nothing a veteran RE player can't handle). Haunting Ground is a good game too.

Crap! There is also Siren to consider!

I remember playing Medieval on the psOne, such a cool game.
Posted Oct 14, 2007 2:55 pm PT
REmake (Resident Evil 1) eternal darkness, and Fatal Frame 2 should be there
Posted Oct 14, 2007 3:22 pm PT
I am playing Resident Evil 4 as I type, not literally of course. It's definently not scary but it does have a fall feel. Another game I like to break out in the fall, not because it is exactly appropriate to the season but it is because it was released at this time of year and I bought it on it's launch date, SotC.
Posted Oct 14, 2007 4:08 pm PT
you forgot re4 and condemned
Posted Oct 14, 2007 5:45 pm PT
