Heh! Wow... well, good luck, Sega! Sonic and the Secret Rings was pretty good, but I still wish they would pay us old-school fans a little more dues, like they're sort of doing in Sonic Unleashed for at least half the game.
On the other hand, let them imagine and re-imagine away, if only for the sake of creativity! I know it's just a way to stay cool and popular with the younger audience (my lil cuz is the perfect target market, so I get it pretty well what they're up to)... but seriously, how many people have been whining about 'ruining Sonic" when in fact he's just getting more popular? No one whined when Mario took on every major sport we know (I bet hockey is next)... Mario's been on every tangent from here to the Bermuda Triangle and back and he's as popular and successful as ever, and they still give him his proper dues with games like Super Mario Galaxy, right?
So seriously, lighten up and STOP WORRYING, ye olde school sonic fans. They still remember us, but they're doing what they have to do to stay alive in this cutthroat industry. We ought to be thankful, if anything. I wish him the best of luck with his sword and shield, if it'll keep him warmed up for something greater and more pure in the future.
