"Let justice be done should the sky fall!"

metal

For those of you that don't know me, I am an attorney by trade, though I handle mostly labor cases, a good friend of mine asked for my help on a criminal case. My friend was a CFO on a multinational company which was recently taken over. As usual, those without severance payments upon termination are the first to go, and my friend wasn't the exception. But this was not all, he among other officers was charged with a special form of larceny and embezzlement.

Funny thing is how we usually judge people BEFORE actual sentencing is pronounced, thus jails in North and South America are flooded with people awaiting sentence. Did you know that in some states 60% of a jails inmate population is awaiting sentence? I wonder what happened to "innocent until proven otherwise".

My buddy was arrested last April and bail was set at 1.6 mil, so he had to face trial in jail. A curious legalese detail about this special mixture between larceny and embezzlement is that you have to have powers of administration from the accusing party in order to appropriate goods entrusted to the accused administration. So did he had such powers? NOOOOOO. So what the hell was that judge thinking when the trial started? Well for starters the company's attorney was close pals with him AND the DA. What they used as a base for the acusation was that my friends signature was important (so that the CEO knew he had reviewed the transaction, even though not necessary for all company checks... There you have it! He had the power to put his signature on company checks!

When you face a battle like this you tend to lose hope and faith in the legal system, because you watch helplessly how the law can be bended and corrupted by man's twisted interests, and how the real power behind our sacred legal institutions is MONEY, not the money my buddy supposedly stole, but the one distributed by our "honorable" authorities.

Fortunately when you accuse someone of a crime, and the DA and Judge are your buddies you tend to lower your guard, you tend to overlook small details, you tend to ignore that appeals exist, and that somewhere, someone still believes in a just system, that someone thinks that our lives can be perfected by a system of laws that serve man, not the other way around. So the DA and the Judge made several mistakes in the interpretation of the law, altered the facts and the ruling to start the trial was reversed by an appellate court. My fried was released last Friday and was reunited with his wife and 3 kids (one of them was born while he was in prison).

You might say "worse cases exist in which the poor fella doesn't get out 'till years later" but that is now what we should celebrate. We should celebrate that this one only spent 2 months in jail for a crime he didn't commit.

So now... Back to gaming!

I'm happy to report that Mass Effect returned my faith in gaming, which I left abandoned for quite some time (2 months is a LOT), And that I'm playing Age of Conan as a lowly level 5 Conqueror that goes by the name Arcadiuskol in the Hyperborian server.

AND I know my idea about the 5 things I think I know about someone blog didn't work as I expected, but I'm currently fixing this.

Cheers!

And LET JUSTICE BE DONE SHOULD THE SKY FALL!

Ah! It's you. It seems my attempts to assassinate you have yet to... bear fruit. It seems I must "up my game" so to speak, lest you continue to roam this plane of existence...

Hey there! Where have you been?
Posted Jun 10, 2008 8:11 pm PT
Ok... ya lost me.

I shall expand the original post to better express myself!

PINCHE CABRON!

That's quite a case you got yourself in, but it's really good to know justice did prevail in the end. At least your legal system isn't as convoluted as the one I'm stuck with here in Honduras, so in your case there is always light at the end of the tunnel. But if the guy's back with his family, all is well, and you should be very happy for helping him out.

Now, Monoco is waiting for you in Hyboria...

Guey no mames! Every legal system evolves from the same principle and the same fault. The one calling the shots is human. Kinda makes Terminator's SKYNET sound not so bad in the end.

If someone here has a relative in the judicial branch of the government, I meant no disrespect.

I'm glad that Finland is the least corrupted country in the world.

Congratulations to you and your buddy. I hope he manages to reclaim his life, and good for you for sticking with him...and upholding the law. Nice to see that still happens. Enjoy the glory that is Mass Effect.

That was a disturbing yet inspiring story, but I can't help but think of one tiny detail...

WHERE THE **** HAVE YOU BEEN ALL THIS TIME?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Here I was, all convinced aliens had hollowed out your body and were living a quaint existence in there when !BAM!... there you are. Too weird man, too weird.

Thanks for your comments guys. And yes JPgalindo, pinche gente corrupta ojala se les pudra el culo. (something about corrupt people).

@tclvis: He is doing fine, we kinda surprised his wife when we arrived at his house. The thing about law is that sometimes you get to be a part of something wonderful, you get to be a part of justice being done (lame Philadelphia ripoff ) And I'm enjoying Mass Effect as well!

@monoco: Well the thing about aliens is that their probing capabilities don't involve anesthesia, but what I've been doing all this time is working my arse off! @Mara: "I'm glad that Finland is the least corrupted country in the world." Aye that is true, one of many reasons I would love to live there, as I've told monoco on other blogs.

I was wrongly accused over 8 years ago and fired from a job for something I didn't do. I took the entire company (Corporate Wide) to court. They were found 2 1/2 years later of failer to produce any witnesses because the 4 people who accused me of doing what I didn't do were also fired 1 year after me and then said they made the story up. The company knew this but kept it a secret until one of my old friends showed up at my present work and told me about it. We went to court and pulled the rug out from under them in front of everyone and they were speechless. They were found guilty of 9 counts of illegal activities... amongst them was illegal firing of me without just cause or proof, sexual harrasment, withholding of evidence,(against the law in most states) and 6 other counts. Needless to say they got the entire library thrown at them... and will probably never do that again! The judge really ripped them open when all was exposed! Truth, patients, and my beilef in God in Heaven set me free!

I am glad your friend is out and you are back to gaming!

I rather debate the high petro prices.. It will cost me now 40 USD to fill my tank.. I need one of those SmartCars.. :/ Honda Fit is pretty fuel efficient.. but hell the US model cars are always bigger petro-guzzlers than other country cars.. Also, the US is pretty spread out in terms of city building. European cities have a more compact "walking" ability than the US. Tell me why the US has to be so damn different?! Oh and then I can rant on Bush doing away with 401K ... (Thank God I cashed mine out) .. What he doing the Regan shuffle again?! People on the border are running across to Mexico to buy food and fuel.. then they come back across and buy a fuel additive to make the petro not "evaporate" in the tank.. so the additive is pretty hard to come buy now. And don't even mention how this impact is having on the trucking companies.. LanStar a corporate trucking company furnishes gas cards to independent truckers and those trucks sometimes use those cards to purchase food.. then the company turns around and deducts that purchase from the truckers pay.. (when they didn't used to) Also, they still charge the same price for burgers without the tomatoes. explain that one.. sure the tomatoes are "tainted" but at least deduct that from the prices! Heck, deduct it from the salads!!! Sheesh. Anyways, just an up-to-date rant. Maybe I should rant about how the IRS increasing income tax rates too.. "no taxation without representation"? anyone?! I just see another great depression on the way, and it ain't gonna be pretty. Heck I see the amount of homeless people on a nice rise. I don't think a new state leader will be able to "put humpty dumpty back together again".

@Sandpiper: Well good for you! Uhmm did you get punitive damages? And yes it's good to be back in gaming, especially with Mass Effect and Age of Conan. More so since ME consolish counterpart was perfected with the leap to the PC!

@Alkpaz: I was actually in your hometown when my buddy was being released. Now don't get me talking about them IRS suits, I hate them, they are, well they are quite a bunch of...concerned government workers of course...

You were absent for some time here on GS, i thought you quit. As far as i am concerned, game need to be something special to get me sticked to my PC these days ...i think i am loosing interest, we are all getting to old.

Speak for thyself gfile. I still game, but less because of my position as a office manager (which means 24/7 on call) and I work about 14-16hrs a day.. doesn't leave much for gaming. I can understand why Arcadius is bogged down with work since everyone is lawsuit happy right now because of the starving economy. and truckers around here are stating that diesel will top 7 USD / gallon by next summer. Pure speculation at this point, but if it continues you bet it will have a deep impact on the world economy as well as (probably another war) Fuel of War points to this as did Act of War.. both are, btw, PC games.

My dear A, i know only to well how messed up the legal system is. there are flaws in just about everything we do. the government of law and order and not different. They seem to feel that they hold all the power just because they carry a gun and a badge and swore an oalth. bs. The saying of (guilty till proven inocent ) says it all. im plaining on doing mass effect next right now im in pop3.
Posted Jun 19, 2008 6:06 pm PT
Well, I'm 31 and I will probably be gaming for a while longer. For now, Mass Effect gave me my fix for now I'm on my second run as a renegade. I hate/love the law, it puts food on the table and keeps society in check, but I game to stay away from it. I don't do consolish devices save that miniature Consolish device DS, only to find that Phoenix something lawyer game. I almost cried/laughed my arse off when I saw some screens.

Hey mate ...i see you play AoC ...but you are in USA server and i can only use EU server, so we will never meet in Hyboria ...thats crap
Posted Jul 15, 2008 3:49 am PT
Argh man I hate that lousy server thing! I was more than willing to slice our EU brethren up (Monoco), but it seems my luck ain't that good.

I don't have much time for online games, since I need a game I can put on pause. But this Conan game is pretty good.
