Eternal Sonata (X360)(2%) 1,548Mass Effect (X360)(37%) 29,780Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 (PS2)(3%) 2,184Super Paper Mario (WII)(7%) 5,634The Witcher (PC)(51%) 40,899

So this was the final score, and thus it reads that THE PEOPLE have spoken and they name the Witcher the Best Role Playing Game. You of course know the People, because I mean, they are me, you, he, she etc. They are the end users, they are the ones who get to enjoy games, they are the ones who are mostly paying to play games!

But then enter Gamespot...The Man. This Tsunami Persona or whatever its called wins?! What were they thinking? Did overnight GS became a part of the Bush Administration? What happened to listening to the users? You know, those guys that keep you in business!

I mean I'm ok with Game Extraordinare the Witcher not winning the award of course, but losing to that Tsurimi Persona game? From an inferior consolish device?! What in the name of all that is holy were these guys from Gamespot thinking?! IT SHOULD'VE BEEN MASS EFFECT! Oh now I'm pissed, gamespost, I'm going to boycott all elections from now on!!! HOW DO YOU LIKE THAT GLITCHSPOT!

Pictures can describe my feelings better than a thousand words:

cox

So that Tsunami game at least ain't JRPG....right?

Note: This blog is supposed to be a joke, no pun intended, expressed or implied to owners of consolish devices or that Tsurimi Persona game.

Yeah, that was about my reaction too!

I was shocked that it wasn't The Witcher or Mass Effect. Then I remembered that Gamespot gave both of them 8.5s, for some reason. I think Gamespot just likes to be the oddballs now, fighting the popular opinion just to stand out. Most other sites/magazines are giving Assassin's Creed lower scores, like in the 7 or 8 range, while Gamespot made it an Editor's choice.
Posted Dec 26, 2007 9:31 pm PT
That's the facial expression several awards have brought out of me. The RPG category certainly being one of them. Shing Mogami Tensei: Persona 3.... not only those that name make go "what kind of stupid name is that!", but seriously, after playing the Witcher demo, I can't see how could they give to a "cutesy" game like that.

Then again, they also gave the overall GOTY to the fat plumber, so it probably isn't surprising...

Just wait until I get around to the the action/adventure award going to Assassin's Creed over God of War 2. Oooh yeah...if you thought my currently blogged rant about the RPG of the Year award was impressive. Just you wait. My hands are twitching at my keyboard in anticipation already. It may be the first blog post ever to top the 100,000 word barrier.

I agree with Sydogg. Looking through, MANY awards have me making that face. Assassin's Creed over God of War II like Jim said? God of War II was ALMOST PERFECT! Assassin's Creed, as my current blog says, has many issues that hold it back. Best Shooter to Crysis? I am sorry, but a game that only 15% of the gaming community can play because of absurd system requirements DOES NOT deserve that award over Call of Duty 4 or The Orange Box, no matter how good it may be. Plus CoD4 has just about the best multiplayer I have played in a while when it comes to an FPS. Best Atmosphere to Stalker? Come on, did these people even play BioShock (Although, I agree that Stalker is good in this department)? Or how about Most Innovative Gameplay to World in Conflict? Now, I did absolutely adore WiC, but the majority of its gameplay was torn out of Massive's own Ground Control series. Anyway, you get my point.
Posted Dec 26, 2007 10:27 pm PT
^^^ I agree with you for the most part, except on the Crysis comment. I mean, I can't really say which shooter is the best, but the system requirements issue shouldn't be someting to keep Crysis from getting shooter of the year.

But I do agree strongly that Bioshock should've gotten better atmosphere (even if STALKER is also great in that department). Bioshock is ALL about atmosphere!
Posted Dec 26, 2007 10:33 pm PT
It is more than just system requirements though. I feel that Call of Duty 4 is the better shooter, but a big part of my choice is also the fact that so few people can play Crysis. Yeah, it might be a good game, but I think that extremely steep system requirements should be a point against a game. And to give you an idea of how totally bias Gamespot was, they listed the system requirements as the main downside that lowered Supreme Commander's score and that game's requirements are even lower than Crysis! I think Gamespot just said "OMFG PRETTY!!!" and threw the award at Crysis while masturbating over the pretty graphics without taking requirements into consideration like they did for Supreme Commander.

Perhaps that consolish game was advertised a lot in GS, I wouldn't know for I rarely visit consolish devices pages, except perhaps the forums where I go every now and then a drop a rant. Still, that Mario game got plenty of ads here, so I wonder...

BUT THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN! They either want the awesomeness of Crysis or the greatest sniper mission ever (CoD4).

Although STALKER...uhmm it does have atmosphere, I mean it did in fact made me research the subject (well I wouldn't call doing a wiki on it research but still), it made me feel what those people were going through, save for the falling body parts of course. I loved the endings, loved the gameplay which is of course HL2ish, and loved the story. Yet I can say the same thing about Bioshock...

And Crysis, well at first I thought it was all just a big playable benchmark, but then the game grabbed me by the balls, and just when you thought it was all over, it had only just begun! Kinda reminds me of a Link to the Past back in my consolish days, great game.

But in Peter Cushing's own words, "This bickering is pointless!" We must stick together and fight the Man! Woe to Gamespot! And why are we paying too much attention on a gamesite-going sloppy's opinions while we should be out there (well not out there as in "out there on the street") playing the games. I'm almost afraid the admit that after my 2 run on CoD4, 2 run on Bioshock, and finishing Crysis on hard, I've yet to finish The Witcher, and Medieval 2 Total War Kingdoms is still waiting on me.

" I think Gamespot just said "OMFG PRETTY!!!" and threw the award at Crysis while masturbating over the pretty graphics without taking requirements into consideration like they did for Supreme Commander. "

There, I think you nailed it there, ever since the departure of key staff members, gamespot seems more like a school newspaper than a serious gaming site.

I was going to just write a comment here, but the notion of a fat plumber franchise being a better gaming experience than Mass Effect made me so upset that I had to make my own short blog entry about it.

This is beyond ridiculous.

I am at your side Arcadius...Gamespot wanna be ConsoleSpot. these days...The Witcher is great and have no competition as RPG, Crysis should be the game of 2007 for sure, and WIC is the the most dissapointing game for me this year....and I am a strategy fan.

"The RPG category certainly being one of them. Shing Mogami Tensei: Persona 3.... not only those that name make go "what kind of stupid name is that!""

Hell yeah! When I first read that name I couldn't stop thinking about sushi and how I hate those damned California Rolls. I think it was in one of Jims blogs, I don't know.

@raven:

I'm not gonna argue with you on the Supcom comment. You're right, GS where too harsh on it for the requirements, and it does show some sort of inconsistency in the manner they review games.

But for the record, I think they went wrong by penalizing Supcom, not by awarding Crysis the score they did. I just don't view system requirements as such an issue, especially when I can play Crysis on Medium-High settings (not Very High) on my $1000 PC.

@gfile: Kudos on the Consolespot name! In fact I think inferiorconsolishdevicespot.com would be a better name for it! Well maybe not but I may use consolespot from now on when refering to this gamesite, that besides falling out, contiunes to draw us into its awful reviews and articles! So you better not copyright that name eh!

But I love World in Conflict! "If the people disagree with me then the people can kiss the hairiest part of my hiney.

No matter how dire the situation seems you guys never seem to lose your sense of humor.

@Dogg: Well you know, you should've got the 3870, but that's ok, for a guy who adores Carlos Pavon. I really don't see a big difference between the graphic modes that Crysis sports, and trust me I've tried them all. It just looks great however you look at it! And if people would just judge the gameplay and story rather than the graphic effects then they would know that it's not all about the looks. It's like Victoria's Secret Models, I'm sure Giselle is all brainy once you get to know her.

Arcadius you greasy weasel...did you report me to a moderator? grr....my vengeance will be vast and horrifying if you did! (Now where did I put that frowny face? I never use the damn thing so I don't know how to make one...)

Me? Report to to a moderator? I would never, even after our Gordon Freeman vs Kratos Fanboy brawl!! Were you reported to a moderator recently? Reports to moderators seem kinda like "I'm going to tell the teacher " stuff back in school. Oh how I hated those nerds!

Oh you mean because of my previous post!!!! now I get it!!! I was just too lazy to quote both Raven and yourself so I just copied and pasted both your posts by highlighting them together. I would never report anyone to a moderator! And miss a good fight? NEVER!

in your last comment. Of all the people I suspect might, at some point, report me to a moderator you would be way down the list. I was just trying to be funny. Edit: Hmmm. So instead of calling you a "greasy weasel" I should have gone with the "lazy bastard" approach?

Uhmmm yeah. I mean I'm in a kind of gaming dry spell, where I've been unable to game as I'm meant to because the wife is sick and I have to take care of the daughter all day, so excuse me if I took a few seconds to myself and not press contol-c twice... It's all fun and games 'till someone loses an eye.
Posted Dec 27, 2007 2:17 pm PT
I think Mass Effect should have won, too... nice picture of Dr. Cox, by the way. Scrubs is hilarious.
Posted Dec 27, 2007 3:20 pm PT
"So this was the final score, and thus it reads that THE PEOPLE have spoken and they name the Witcher the Best Role Playing Game."

Hence why there's a Reader's Choice Award and separate award from GlitchSpot? No point in having two separate distinctions if every Gamer's choice equaled a GS's choice.

"From an inferior consolish device?!"
"IT SHOULD'VE BEEN MASS EFFECT!"

But wait, are not thy X360 also an inferior, and dare I say blasphemous , device? Indeed, thy PS2 be inferior to thy X360 in terms of the little metal thingies that makes the thing play games, held by not more than cardboard and duct tape. So either way, The Witcher would have lost to a game from an inferior device!

"Note: This blog is supposed to be a joke, no pun intended, expressed or implied to owners of consolish devices or that Tsurimi Persona game. "

Me hopes you see that this post is meant to do the same.

Damn you and your logical response Vainn!!!
Posted Dec 27, 2007 4:45 pm PT
"I think Mass Effect should have won, too... nice picture of Dr. Cox, by the way. Scrubs is hilarious." Yeah I feel the same way, about both things! In fact, game extraordinare The Witcher being noticed by such a company as Consolespot is quite an acomplishment itself.

@Vainn: Vainn thou hast pwned me in me own Blog!

Well yes the X360 is an inferior consolish device, and as such it brands the PS2 an insignificant consolish device, but I would've felt a lot better if the editorial from a company that does not care for its costumers held Mass Effect as a winner than that Sushi game. Indeed I've been bad, and the gods of the games have seen fit to punish me with this gaming dry spell. After my penance is done I shall game, since my posts could be intimately related to my lack of gaming altogether...

ConsoleSpoters are gettin united...they´ll eat us alive...save yourself and buy a console BTW...WIC dissapointed me coz i have espected the game like Total War (also the fan of TW) with real maps, or at least builting the base...i dont like reinforcements bought by points

Well you were right about consolespotters, that inferior mario game won the game of the year. Cool. The wii is the most inferior of them inferior consolish devices...

Persona 3 must be a pretty gnarly game then...
Posted Dec 29, 2007 5:29 am PT
Well well! Lookie lookie woo who decided to show up!! Oh pardon me Monoco, perhaps you where involved in some heavy partying and have just finished your last beer keg, which is such case my congratulations to you good sir. Or perhaps that partying consisted in manarhonic sessions of gaming in which also you get my most sincere congratulations. Jk

So Monoco, whatcha think of the awards?
Posted Dec 29, 2007 10:27 am PT
Unfortunately, no wild parties or late-night gaming sessions were had. I owe my absence to the fact that I had a nasty case of the flu coupled with the fact that my modem died and it took me all of four days to find a replacement. Not because they were scarce (I found a great ZyXel in the first place I went to), but because I was convinced it wasn't my modem but rather my ISP. Interesting stuff, huh?

Anyways, about the awards. I disagree with most of their picks and thought some of them were even downright stupid. Rock Band and GHIII picked up way too many awards, Persona 3 should never, ever have won against The Witcher and Mass Effect and Bioshock got shafted in way too many cases (Best Atmosphere was a lock IMHO). As for GotY itself, I'm not sure if SMG deserved it but I'm actually OK with their choice. After I start playing it I'll know for sure.
Posted Dec 29, 2007 12:08 pm PT
@Raven - How can riddiculous system requirements keep a game from being an awesome game ? Sure , CoD4 looks decent and has significantly lower system requirements than Crysis , but still , Crysis on low/medium looks better ( to me ) than CoD4 on medium/high . And I love both of those games .
Posted Jan 1, 2008 2:39 pm PT
Bah , I hate FireFox ... can't edit my post , can't post a new one unless I first just press submit without any message inside it ( Doesn't let me write anything otherwise ) .
Anyway , does the rank of a game matter ? Gameplay-wise , even though I love both CoD4 and Crysis , I'd still prefer Crysis .

sitajunn:
You have a weird version of Firefox then... I have no problems whatsoever, other than the thousands of scripts that Gamespot seems to think vital to the site.

GS is glitchy regardless of what browser you use. But sometimes Firefox just hangs in there, waiting for god knows what before it actually submits my posts....

Mario Galaxy- Bwahahhahaa. Well, my daughter likes it anyway. Whenever we're at the game store, she makes me play the demo so she can watch.
And for RPGs, the pickings were a bit thin AGAIN this year, with Mass Effect and Witcher being the only ones worthy of the honors.
Que hace una mangera en el mercado?

Sod, same here! But with Ratatouile! you got it made with that Mario inferior consolish device game!

Que hace una mangera en el mercado? Uhmm no se, pero a 'Dogg le encantan...asi como la gasolina

Trans> I don't know, but 'Dogg sure loves them!

A lot of hate for Mario here. I've yet to try Galaxy, but so far it looks fun. GotY-fun? We shall see...
Posted Jan 6, 2008 1:02 pm PT
WHAT?! Monoco you're what, 22? And you're still playing Mario games?

I mean I play the new Super MArio Brothers but at the instance of the wife making me do it! Now who's making you play that kiddy consolish game? Oh and when did you get a Wii?
Posted Jan 8, 2008 11:57 am PT
I agree... monco...stop playing mario galaxy!!!..Leave those "mario" games for your nephews or neighbouring kids or...just kids, they would be happy to get their hands on that game, i am sure

Hey, I refuse to live according to age brackets! If something looks fun, I'll be damned if something as trivial as age is going to stop me.

And I didn't get the Wii, my little minion did. For Christmas that is. But naturally, when a new console arrives, I feel it is my duty to give it a warm welcome.

It's actually not a bad console when you get right down to it. And the best part is Virtual Console. I love playing all those old Mario games of yesteryear.
Posted Jan 10, 2008 11:03 am PT
Well now that you put it that way...maybe I should give the wife a wii for her birthday so that I could give it a warm welcome, grantes my hands will be shocked as soon as they hold a consolish device controller, but playing the olde nintendo games does sound appealing. I have developed a need to play the olde Bionic Commando. And Monoco, when you say minion you are of course refering to your younger sibling right? not in the sense refered to in Rome:Total War right?
Posted Jan 10, 2008 11:54 am PT
Yeah, little minion as in little brother. I've got two actually. I'm planning on molding them into my personal little army.
Posted Jan 10, 2008 4:42 pm PT
I have to go and check out The Witcher. I personally am looking for Eternal Sonata because it looked so very fun when I played the demo. As for the Tsurimi Persona game I have not heard of it... but as for the Tsunami... well that is my cat!
Posted Jan 12, 2008 9:42 am PT
Shin Megami Tensei. And yeah, i actually cant wait to play it, seeing as it's not out here yet, Mass Effect was supposed to tide me over until it came out, but that lasted a whole 12 hours.

Im really looking forward to it, and it was a very pleasant surprise they liked it enough to give it RPg of the Year.

(I got that this post was a joke, i was just saying i really love the SMT games, they are some of the finest examples of JRPG out there, better imo even than Final Fantasy.)
Posted Jan 12, 2008 1:56 pm PT
I hope the rest of the posts were in the same jesting fashion..

Calling a game about commiting suicide to summon a demon from within you 'cutesy' just doesnt sound like an informed opinion.
Posted Jan 12, 2008 1:58 pm PT
@ diablobasher:

As tedious as it may be, you may want to do all the sidequests in ME to lengthen the game considerably.
Posted Jan 12, 2008 4:18 pm PT
"but as for the Tsunami... well that is my cat!"

And to honor him was the reason I mocked that tsurimi game
Posted Jan 12, 2008 11:15 pm PT
Im liking your blogs
But the main thing that got my attention was the excellent use of Dr Cox! Although Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 isnt out here yet, I have little doubt that it will be my favorite game out of all those listed, have you have every played any of the Shin Megami Tensei games? Just wondering. I dont know if anyone has answered the question, I cant be bothered reading through all those comments but yes, Persona 3 is a JRPG, in fact the enemies in all SMT games I have played have all (or at least mostly) been based on Japanese Mythology. One more thing Im wondering, whats the deal with calling it tsurimi?

Anywho, I look forward to reading more of your blogs XD
