First off, HAPPY EARTH DAY! Hug a tree, plant a tree or buy a tree (for a friend).

Earth Day Tree

Hallmark aired their 236th presentation on Sunday with The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler. The talented Anna Paquin played the lead (Irena) and what a touching brilliant film. Beautiful. Anna is fabulous in the HBO series True Blood and it was nice to see her play this marvelous human being who changed the lives of so many children.

Irena Sendler

So how many of these Comic legends do you know? I'm actually stumped on a couple, which surprised me, being such a fan of the old schmaltz. I thought I'd supply a fun laugh with this clip of comedian John Pinette WATER

Hi April. Thanks for the clip. LOL. I don't know the two guys on the ends in the middle row, but I know the others.

Hullo April! Maybe things are changing for the better on the site, too. It's a pity that there's only one female "comic legend" on the cover, hopefully that keeps changing as well. The two guys on the left (above George Burns) aren't 'high def' enough to be certain about, are those the two that you puzzled over? Please print a list if you nail them all.

Which ones are you having trouble with? I know most of them and might be able to help.
Posted Apr 22, 2009 9:52 am PT
Front row George Burns, Gracie Allen and Jimmy Durante.
Middle row ? Ed Wynn, ?
Back row ? Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Groucho Marx and Eddie Cantor.
So that's three mystery comics.

You've got sharp eyes, AprilFox....is the guy on the middle left Morey Amsterdam? Vaguely resembles him (I saw him guest star on a Littlest Hobo rerun a few weeks ago.. )
Posted Apr 22, 2009 10:49 am PT
The one on the left in the back row is Fred Allen. He had a supposed feud with Jack Benny when they both had radio shows. It was just for publicity, though.

I just happened to think...do you think the one on the right in the middle is Harold Lloyd? He wore those kind of glasses. I don't remember seeing a picture of him when he was older.

My mom confirms that IndianaMom is correct about Fred Allen. She thinks she knows the name of the guy with the cigar (middle left), but it won't come to her right now. If it does, I'll let you all know what she thinks. Thanks for the list, April.

Your right about Fred Allen, IndianaMom! He died in 1956, I have heard his name before but no idea what he looked like. Not sure about Harold Lloyd or Morey Amsterdam. I think someone drew red glasses on the one pic. LOL!

Happy Earth Day!! I see Jimmy Durante, Ed Wynn, Groucho, Eddie Cantor, and Bob Hope for sure. I think that's Bobby Clark on the right and Steve Murray on the left of Wynn. I didn't recognaize Burns & Allen at first!! The rest I don't know.

Hi April!

Long time no hear from in blogland. We even missed your birthday this year. You've got me wandering around YouTube watching John Pinette clips. He's great - funny and not vulgar! Thanks for sharing and Happy Earth Day.

Top row: Fred Allen, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Groucho Marx, and Eddie Cantor.
Middle row: Ken Murray, Ed Wynn, and Bobby Clark.
Bottom row: George Burns, Gracie Allen, and Jimmy Durante.

My thanks to I-Mom for Fred Allen. He was the only one who really stumped me.

Hi Woolsey, Right about Bobby Clark, I only know Bobby Clark the Hockey player! Hi Karl, That's what I liked about John, I like that kind of humor too . It has been awhile, I have been busy gardening and archiving. You're right Hooech!

Hi April, Some of the guys on the front of the magazine look like waxworks, are they supposed to?
Posted Apr 22, 2009 4:32 pm PT
Hi April! That's a great cover. I had a hard time with Fred Allen and Bobby Clark. I just love Burns and Allen. My aunt was a collector of old time radio show that were released on cassett tapes. I have the collection now and Burns and Allen are my favorite. Thanks for the link! Have a wonderful day.

Hope you enjoyed the day. I didn't do anything special other than work. I was going to swim in the evening but I fell asleep. I did a fast run last night and didn't get much sleep at all for some reason (3 1/2 hrs.!). Hopefully the site will be improving too. There are some small signs that it's getting better. I might even post another photo blog entry again with original photos.

Hi Maverick, They do look kind of waxy don't they! LOL The cover is from April 1951 and to me it looks like they collaged the photos and maybe even colorized them. Hi Scott, That's so awesome! They were a great couple that's for sure. Here's an Ed Wynn show episode you can watch online HERE.

Hi Home, I was able to plant a tree and do lots of yardwork. Good thing to because I woke up this morning with snow on the ground! ARGH. They must be working you hard if your missing out on your exercise. I can't wait for you to post those beautiful blooming cherry trees.

Oo! Oo! Oo! A fellow John Pinette fan?! Just a week ago, I was named his TVdot Person Guide Page editor!
Posted Apr 23, 2009 2:31 pm PT
Hi Sparkle, Congrats! He's a very funny guy.
Posted Apr 23, 2009 3:31 pm PT
Sparkle: I saw Pinette when he performed his "I'm Starvin'" show in Montreal in 2006. I was in tears and unable to breathe by the end of it. He is quite possibly one of the funniest acts I've ever come across. Take care of his guide. He deserves a good editor.

At first glance, I recognized just 7 of the legends on the cover. Looks like the issue also had an interesting Cold War article...nostalgia from cover to cover! In celebration of Earth Day, a mango seed I potted a few weeks ago finally sprouted...it was a lot of work to get the seed out of the shell. I'm not sure how well it will grow indoors, though.

Hi jokipper, I wish I had the magazine, I love reading about the old stories. Wonder if there is a LOOK magazine site like there is for TIME magazine. Would be interesting to see some of the photos and stories. Yum mangoes! I think as long as you give it some good natural light (they have those natural grow light bulbs as well) you should be fine. I did it once with an Orange seed and had an orange seedling for about three years, he got sick and died.

Hi stranger! I was not familiar with the Irena Sendler story, but you inspired me to Wiki her name. Her story sounds like a really wonderful one. Truely a wonderful human being. Amazing bravery and heart.

I saw that Waterpark bit that John Pinette did on Just for Laughs Festival. He is a funny guy.

".....I don't even see the speedo!"

Hilarious!

Let's see....

Burns & Allen
Jimmy Duranty
Groucho
Bob Hope
Jack Benny
Ed Wynn
Eddie Cantor (eyes!)

but I can't get the other guys.

Hi BuskieBoy, I was the same there were three that I didn't know. Pinette is one funny guy! Kind of a mix-mash blog, but I wanted to lighten things up a bit. That's where my hubby watched him originally on Just For Laughs. He also likes the comedian Russell Peters RP, the guy is hilarious!

These days I'd probably remember the names more so than the faces.
