So TV.com wants a presence on Facebook? That's cool, except now I wonder if we should mix our profiles? At the minimum, I can just say I'm a fan, and that those who really care to research it can make the link, but I don't know about wanting very casual online friends whom I haven't even met in person to see my personal photos or know my real life friends and family. That'd just break all sorts of privacy. Similarly, I wouldn't want my real life to be strongly associated with my dog's blogs here, and have people assume that all I do is watch tons of television and obsess over subs and silliness here. Unless I was working in the television industry, I don't see the benefit, although it is very web 2.0 to merge it all.
What do you think? Do you prefer to keep your fun hobby networking separate from your real life networking, or is it not a big deal?

I'll probably keep them separate for now. I set up a page on MySpace a few years ago but I rarely ever visit that site. I don't use Facebook that much even though I've signed up for a few non-TV-related groups there.

Don't really care at all. I don't use Facebook. Also, even though I don't use it, I think TV.com using twitter and having our profiles linked to twitter so we could post short blogs would be kind of neat.

I'll definitely keep them separate for a lot of the reasons you mentioned.

I don't use Facebook but I have many online friends here where we discuss TV and a lot of other things too. My non-virtual friends are completely separate though. I think it's probably best that way.

Wow...what a strikingly profound question. That reminds me of a question asked in Contemporary Social Theory class back when I was in grad school, good lord, 17 years ago. There are variable dimentions in personal identity and presentation. I think that it would be wise for one to consider those dimensions and the effects of mixing networks. I think that the level of comfort and acceptance is going to vary from individual to individual. Frankly, I would not care so much; I even blog about many peronal thoughts and feelings. But then, I am not so interesting enough that anybody really pays much attention. But I can certainly see why some people would not at all want septerate parts of their identies mixed. And I think that wanting such boundaries in the first place is reasonible.

I have a facebook account, but I rarely use it and with Twitter, I don't use that all.

I only have one person from GameSpot as a friend and two from here (and I've met them in person), as well as just sending a request to someone whom I read their blog and they mine. Otherwise I shouln't have to worry since it's a real name at Facebook and just a username here.

No interest in Facebook whatsoever. Ditto for twitter, my space, your space etc. Ad nauseum. It reminds me of the humble beginnings of the internet and when MIRC was the place to chat. It took me along time to even blog here or comment as I'm extremely shy and private. I was with tvtome from the beginning and never chatted or blogged there and it took me over a year at tv.com to blog.

I have no interest in Facebook at all

home - Tv.com's so much more blog friendly than Facebook, which seems to be channeling a lot of Twitter-like activity from friends and family. Plus I like that it focuses on TV.
SPD - I agree they should pick up on the twittering buzz. And they really need the Currently Watching shows list that Gamespot and MyAnimeList have. That can do wonders to increase activity.
layle1 - Yeah, the anonymity here allows me to reach outside my usual demographic but I don't want the other way around in the real life situation. That's just inviting trouble.
hrgaffney - I'm sure interests will cross among some friends.
STQ - The virtual profile was more pronounced in multi-player computer games since you could be whatever RPG character or Sim person you selected. On here, it's just whatever avatar and pictures you put up. On Facebook, there's more accountability to post and stick with real information. You never know if you become interesting to somebody in either world.
Minarvia - Well I did sign up for Twitter but I think most of my family members stick with Facebook for their Twittering habits, like I need to know what someone is having for lunch? Hee.
Jekyll - That's cool that your online tv.com buddies cross over to the real world. I've personally met some online folks and it can be quite interesting. Oh, and they have a Boggle-like word puzzle game on Facebook.
AprilFox - tv.com is my first major blogging area as well.
HimekosAhoge - I think it comes mainly from family and friends. If they're all hooked on it, then you have to use it, otherwise, nevermind.

I'd like to keep them separate. I'm really starting to hate Facebook. Love your use of the term "web 2.0." I read the Yahoo! story about how some people are arguing that it shouldn't be a word. Hah..So much hoopla over nothing.
Posted Jun 11, 2009 2:48 pm PT
I see no point in linking the two. Aside from my personal distain for FaceBook (another rant for another day), I don't see any value to repeating the same information and contacts that already exist here. If I want to chat or blog with the people from TV.com, I'll go to TV.com.
Sounds pretty simple, huh?

That's probably very true, Angus. I've met people on TV.com that I share many interests in hobbies with, but privacy is privacy. I also treat TV.com as "strictly business" here and value the reference, time, etc.
As a frequent Facebook user, I'll be honest: probably the majority of social networking really is a waste of potentially valuable time to young people.

To be honest I wouldn't mind that much because my Facebook page doesn't have many things of my personal life, actually it has nothing of it. I use Facebook mostly to keep updated on bands that I like, there's not much about me there but anyway I think the idea of merging it all very technically confusing for me since I'm no good with these kind of things...

I'm confused. I am loyal to TV.com only. Angus what happened to your apostrophes? LOL

I became a fan, but am keeping the two separate for a lot of the reasons you mention. There are a couple of people I wouldn't mind having my real name and befriending on FB; however, I wouldn't want everyone to have open access.
Posted Jun 12, 2009 12:34 pm PT
I have a facebook profile however, I don't use it much however, my wife and daughter tend to spend a fair portion of their time on it. I would prefer to stay anonymous on TV.com, as you say I don't necessarily want my friends and family to think I spend all of my time in front of 'the box'.

I don't have an FB acct, so it isn't really an issue for me. But I can imagine some people's hesitation in connecting their profiles here and in FB. While this site's more for TV discussion and database buildup, FB is more personal and may contain more sensitive information one wouldn't really want to share with everyone. But I wouldn't mind my friends and family seeing my profile here.

I don't get it. What does having a presence on Facebook mean?
Posted Jun 13, 2009 6:24 am PT
Good god, no. The second I saw that facebook was making a username availability sort of deal, I immediately knew that I didn't want one... especially one under any of my online monikers. Mixing my online persona with my real life one has always been something I'm against. It's just so... weird. Maybe I'll elaborate in a blog later on
.

I have a FB page but as far as linking my TV.Com profile with my FB page...UMM No.

So keeping it separate. "I wouldn't want ... [to] have people assume that all I do is watch tons of television and obsess over subs and silliness here." Umm but that's all we all do Agnus! Haha.
