GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con
Saturday, Dec 1, 2007

I haven't updated my admittedly anemic blog in almost a year, but this week's debacle over the termination of Jeff and Tim's jobs under dubious circumstances and in a manner that I'm sure the bright people responsible for are now regretting has compelled me to update it. There's nothing I have to say on the matter that hasn't been said already, but I do want to express solidarity with Jeff and Tim (and release some of this pent up frustration and disbelief).

I'm not worried about either Jeff or Tim. They are both incredibly talented people who I respected deeply during my comparatively short stay at GameSpot, and I know they'll be just fine. I do worry about the reputation of GameSpot, which has been my homepage for over 10 years and a publication that I deeply respect; I worry about the constantly eroding line separating church and state (editorial and marketing) at the site; I worry about a publication that's being managed by people with no substantial editorial background or an understanding of the games industry; and I worry about the impact that this week's action will have on the credibility of the gaming press as a whole. I love this site and the people that provide content for it, but for some like me, it'll take a lot before I make a purchasing decision based on that content.

To paraphrase something that Greg said this morning, credibility can be gained and lost, though it's much harder to be gained. I hope those responsible for the manner in which all of this was handled are made to publicly answer for their irresponsible actions. That'd be the first step in helping to restore some of that lost credibility.

My credibility to Gamespot will never be lost, and it never will, Gamespot will always be my treasure site for games and the gaming community in whole , Jeff's departure had its impact on me & it really did touch me deep inside ,but that will never make me lose faith in this site , Never.

Gamespot's credibility is shattered to me, it will no longer be on my bookmarks list, i might visit it from time to time, but not daily as i used to, and i will certainly not read and watch every piece of content they used to put out like i used to. To me Jeff WAS gamespot, so goodbye gamespot... i knew you well.

Hey Amer.

You're totally right. People should be fired for this. A public apology should be made. And they should offer him his job back with guarantees for absolute editorial insulation, and something extra for his troubles. I think all those steps are necessary for GameSpot to start down the path to redemption.

Thanks, Amer. If there were two people in the world I could bear children for, it would be you and Mariska Hargitay.

I agree with you 100%, Amer. Oh, and by the way, you can't beat 100%!

Please see my blog regarding the wall that should exist between advertising and editorial. http://www.gamespot.com/users/djord02/

At the end of the day Gamespot should be an impartial site and not be affected by advertising or outside influenecs. Eidos and IO should also accept that that game I will refuse to speak of isn't anything special in todays world of brilliant action games (see Halo 3, Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect, even though Mass Effect isn't strictly an action game its is a third person shooter and it does have a cover system). Jeff is one of the biggest personalities (and fairest reviewers) in the video game community and to sack him after so many others have left Gamespot. WTF?!

Totally agree with you, this behaviour towards Jeff just leaves me cold. In my mind GS has lost it's position as a trusted source of news and reviews. I'm sure the full story will emerge at some point, but from the outside it just seems like a really stupid decision.

The problem is that the ideals of integrity and objectivity that GameSpot once fought so hard for, and would need to be in full force for the site to regain its credibility, flies directly in the face of the consequences and motives behind the Gerstmann firing. Are the same people truly ready and convinced to do the exact opposite of what they've tried to this point? I say their egos are too large to swallow their pride, admit their wrong, and reverse all their tactics.
