I've always wanted to compile a list of my personal greatest games of all time. Of course, my list would not be based of technicalities like gameplay mechanics and how well it's developed, but it would reflect the games that I personally enjoyed the most and for whatever reason. Of course I play games that are well developed and have likeable gameplay mechanics, but the reason for one being ranked over the other is the fact that I enjoyed it more. Times when I played these games also influence how much I like the game, if life was going good, I probably enjoyed it more and if it had a more significant meaning to me than just another game, then it will probably be ranked higher. The list is biased in many ways, I must admit, since I played heavily on certain systems and the personal liking of the game was influenced by my life in general, like I stated earlier.
The system stated next to the game shows what I played it for, so don't tell me the game was on other systems! So, off the top of my head, this would be a rough outline of what it would turn out like:
1. Deus Ex (PC/PS2)
2. Super Mario RPG (SNES)
3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC/XBOX)
4. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
5. Splinter Cell (XBOX)
6. Bully (PS2)
7. Deus Ex: Invisible War (PC/XBOX)
8. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
9. Return to Castle Wolfenstein (XBOX)
10. Mafia (PC)
11. Animal Crossing (GC)
11. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PC/XBOX)
12. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (PC/XBOX)
13. Pokemon Gold/Silver (GBA)
14. Battlefield 2 (PC)
14. Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (XBOX)
15. Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
16. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS/X360arcade)
17. Final Fantasy IX (PS)
18. Final Fantasy X (PS2)
19. Flash Flash Revolution (PCinternet)
20. Rainbow Six Vegas (X360)
21. Battlefield Vietnam (PC)
22. Counter-Strike (XBOX, YES the xbox version)
23. ESPN NHL Hockey (XBOX)
24. ESPN NFL Football (XBOX)
25. Need For Speed Underground 2 (XBOX/PS2)
As you can see, the list is very rough, there's 2 spots for 11 and 14 cause I'm too lazy to fix it, meaning there's 27 games on a list of 25. Also the last 5 games should be ranked above the previous 5, again, I'm too lazy to fix it. The time will come to rework the ranks.
Games that would probably make the list if I played them or haven't played yet just might be:
- Mass Effect
- Star Wars: KotOR II The Sith Lords
- Thief: Deadly Shadows
- Thief I and II
- Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
- Bioshock
- Paper Mario: 1000 Year Door
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
- Call of Duty 4
There are some really great games I played that didn't make the list and by no means does that say that I didn't like the game, it's just that it wasn't memorable or it was just another game but a really good one. Maybe it juuuuuust barelymissed my list. Honorable mentions would consist of:
- Goldeneye 007
- Super Mario 64
- Day of Defeat
- Gran Turismo
- Metroid Prime
- Spyro The Dragon
- Ape Escape
- Tony Hawk's Underground
