To make up for my absence, here's another analysis on one of our Sodor friends. This time it's Gordon, a member of the Steam Team, and the second character introduced into the TV series.
Gordon is definitely the respected elder engine of the group. While Edward and Toby are most likely older and wiser at times, Gordon is known for his size and strength. But his character isn't a bully, but rather an older brother. He is occasionally competitive with Henry and James, and is often boasting to Thomas and Percy. What's respectable about Gordon's character is that he really isn't perfect, and that he admits it from time to time. Some of the best storylines revolve around this trait.
In "Respect For Gordon", Gordon's own insecurity made him thirst for power more than ever, going as far as demanding the others to like him. The looks on Gordon's face make me crack up every time when he sees an engine disrespect him in that episode.
Gordon is a particular favourite of mine because he hasn't changed at all since his debut. Some complain that he now agrees to carry freight, but I think he just does this for more glory. And when he carries freight, you'll notice that it's often in competition. (e.g. in "Big Strong Henry", Gordon pulled the cows becuase Henry also wanted to, and Gordon really just wanted to show off.) Gordon still makes unnecessary quips to the other engines at random times, just to bother them and feel important, which is something not every character in this kind of show does. So here's a tribute to Gordon, a unique personality to the Island of Sodor!
